In this video I will show you my current version of an "up & over" rig. I say current because it is always changing and I am open to suggestions for improvement or where I am making mistakes. Everyone likes to have their own adjustments and I like to experiment to find what suits my fishing.
I am interested to hear what changes you make to your version and the differences in how you make and use it...

Using the pulley bead also puts less strain on the rig body compared to a really fine swivel digging into the line! Also to make everything a bit more stream line use small 4mil beads instead of the big bulky 8mils!!

Hello Mark. Glad you cleared up the name of the knot that I use in virtually all of my videos. Used the knot for as long as I can remember but never knew the name hahah. When you mentioned if I do the rigs professionally well the answer to that is NO. For me mate when I get A length of mono tie it onto a clip that I've either made or bought, build the rig, source some good quality bait. slap the whole thing together and belt it out into the murky depths and then you catch on it...THAT'S WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT FOR ME MATE....Great video mate, you come across very well. What's not to like? Clear, informative and great presentation. Down here is Sunny Queensland I've never seen these rigs used mainly because all you can buy is clunky Asian stuff. I buy all my rig building stuff from Veales and I find they are very very good with great rig building stuff. Can't wait to try this one out.

Thanks for ALL your tips. This video is fab. I usually use use pulley rigs as we have lots of rock and kelp beds up here. However, we do have some clean ground so I am going to seek or out and give the up and over a go. Brilliant channel - keep it going and you’ll be up there with TA and the fish locker - my other 2 favourites. 👍

Years ago I used to read all the sea anglers put all sorts on my lines. Then one day I just got rid of it all and went back to as basic and as simple as possible and I never looked back.

Troy, I think this harks to one of the simplest rigs being a running ledger but adapted slightly to cast a longer hook length from the beach. I like the bite indication it gives as well. I’m interested to know what you use when casting from the beach?

@@seaangling I use paternoster style rigs and 2 swivel single hook like a paternoster but like a running ledger so the fish is direct to the rod and the weight can break free on any snag

Troy, I don’t fish many areas where my weight can become snagged but that may change with some of the trips planned for this year.

Very informative and well presented.Love the tip about the hook direction,never even thought of that before. Must admit I prefer the pre-baited rig as opposed to changing the snoods,mainly as it saves a bit of time.

Excellent tutorial Mark, and very well explained. For the record I have been using a 3ft body and 5ft snood. I've found it releasing in thr air so shortened it to your 24/36 and its much more reliable now. Thanks. 😎👍🏻

I love the detachable snood idea which is something I practice myself however I always use the clip on the snood to a swivel on the rig body and the top of my rigs with a swivel on the end of my leader, if a friend comes with me and needs to borrow one of my rigs I always carry a few fast links with me and lend him one of those too. I always use my own rigs so compatabillity is not a problem for me. The trident pully clip is a breath of fresh air to me.

Swivel on the leader and clip on the body does reduce the risk of a snag. The Gemini 140lb stainless swivels are nice and small.

Just recently found you, so thanks for your work. Always liked using running ledger/Wessex rigs but wanted to clip down sometimes. Developed something that worked and now find it’s an up and over rig..Doh! ( must of seen it before) .The Gemini premium pulley I have only used on running ledger as it seemed perfect for the job, never used as a pulley. I prefer the clip on snood, sorry but it’s more adaptable and last year I had two bass that I would not have saved without it’s light quick removal. Again many thanks for your stuff, newish to this (7-8years) and 60 this year so a late starter🤣

Hi Martin, it’s never too late to go fishing. I find it amazing that someone can develop a rig only to find it matches what others have found also. It must mean we are all doing something right and a focused kind of evolution. I do like detachable snoods but willing to give these simplified rigs a try. Small changes and testing fine tune rigs for conditions, locations and species. There are so many variables, but that is part of the fun. Thank you for tour support. 👍🏻

Thanks Woody, I’m concentrating on this one length for now but I like your idea about having a selection. I was out in the workshop today tinkering with ideas and in particular the anti-tangle rig tubing.

- Great tutorial and explanations Mark. I’ve been using the same rig with the pulley bead but with the detachable hooklengths for a couple of years now. Sometimes if I snatch at the cast or if the hooklength is really heavy mono I do get midair release like Stu mentioned but all in all a great rig. 👍🏻

Mark Williams Sea Angling - I used to use them a lot but found that in a run of tide they can actually present the bait off the bottom up in the water.

Nice one mate.. My go to rig for bigger fish... I add a carp anti tangle sleeve on the snood to the swivel and the bottom by lead... I make it the same as this but I make sure the swivel is tight to the lead so your not casting of the snood line when stretch.. Also a 3ft body will give you a 6ft snood 4ft body 8ft snood as its double the body going up then back down... Plus the body itself so if you fishing a 3ft body 6ft snood your actually fishing a 9ft rig... I Call this rig a running up and over as the lead runs free on body line... Normal up and overs have a fixed lead and the snood crimped just above the lead.. Well that's my thoughts lol. Well done mate

Thank you Michael I really appreciate the feedback. I think I have a lot to learn from all of the carp anglers as they take so much care over the detail in their rigs. I have had it suggested to add tubing to the snood to swivel and above the weight. Do you have a link to the anti tangle sleeve you mention? I would be keen to try that out. Thanks for watching/commenting. Wrt the snood and body length I do like to have that positive difference but I am interested to know why you keep them so close?

@@seaangling deffo mate carp anglers and so tidy with there rigs! .. Any carp anti tangle sleeves will work mate I like the longer ones.. I used to be a rig maker owned pro rigs uk.. I'm very fussy my self on rigs lol.. Having the snood line so tight to the swivel because when you cast any rig it will stretch so say if your using a pulley rig and your snood line is half way up so go more body than snood line when you cast it your body line ain't doing its job your stretching that but also the snood line where its not tight so wreaking the snood line... Very hard to explain lol but I do talk about it in my rig videos mate...

Pretty much how I make the rig,Mark. This is my preferred rig for fishing over clean sand, i do favour the removable hook snood though, I'm probably being lazy as the snoods are quicker to tie, 5 rig bodies and 10 snoods is what I carry with me. Weathers has put a stop to this weekend again.

I feel your pain Mark as I've been keeping a close eye on the weather which has been awful. There seems to be a window developing around Wednesday and I'm keen to get out. I am a fan of the detachable hook link but I'm giving these a go to see if I can be convinced to change.

Hi Mark, I recently came across this channel and was impressed with your clear and concise presentation skills, the quality of the camera work and excellent sound quality. It's good that you are doing rig videos however RU-vid is full of them so I would like to make a request, can you please do some beach fishing baiting up Videos? I know it will be a bit messier than rig-vids but I feel there is a real shortage of baiting up vids done to the quality of your filming. What would be good would be for you to do baiting up vids by species by season, so for example different baits to use and how to present them for Cod at this time of year would be helpful and later in the year when the Smooth hounds arrive some ideas of bait for them and how to go about presenting it etc etc. Well I'm sure you get my drift, I hope you'll consider it as there is a real gap in the market on Y.T. Hi Tim, I'm pleased you have noticed that I'm not using a GoPro action style camera in my recording as it does take some additional effort and the sound is recorded using a dedicated directional mic. I am going to invest in a wireless microphone package which will add another dimension into what is possible. I have incorporated baiting routines into some of my films but I do like your idea of specific videos which I will look into. Do you like the bait loaders and needles that I use in the sessions?

Breakaway proper pulley does away with the small swivel in the pulley bead (can break under casting stress ) The double link with a 1/0 swivel then attatches to your shockleader , much stronger .

Coloured beads are made by many manufacturers and really cheap. I don’t think Trident make beads.

I really enjoy these tackle and shed talks, it's very interesting seeing the variety in rigs that I thought couldn't be improved, and it's interesting seeing how you do things compared to me. For example, I use a Penn surfblaster 8000 with a braid spool with a 60lb shockleader (no taper) where as you have the tapered, I know it's good for casting but it seems a major flaw in the rig/line system which your snag kind of proves. I'm curious as to why you don't use non tapered as if I loose a rig, like last session where a pilot boat snapped both my rigs off on both my rods! It was at the weak points (after the knots) where the rig snapped or failed. Keep up the great entertainment factor too mate👍👍

@@seaangling we were fishing at the end of the breakwater, 5 rods out the front, boat came in close, missed two rods, caught one of my mates and both of mine, thankfully I was already on one rod and mate grabbed the other, took abit of drag then snapped, wasn't a happy bunny

Which knot is your preferred to go from braid straight into non tapered 60lb shockleader? Also at 60lb straight through which leader do you prefer, do you get the knot clatter as it goes through the rings?

@@seaangling very sorry for this slow reply, never got the notice. I'm not 100% what the knot is called, it's one I tried to do from memory, I did try and film a video of it on my channel but it was terrible. If you message me on Instagram I'll try and explain it better. The only time I found it catches on the rings is if there is debris like weed on the line and it inevitably ends up at the knot itself, can see it in daylight but need a keen eye on a night session however

adbfishing I’ve gone from 32lb braid onto straight 60lb shock leader using the FG knot. I made the change today and still need to try it out whilst actually fishing. The tapered shock leader wasn’t working with the braid.

Hi. Interesting that you removed the hook line clip. Can these rigs be used ti target plaice, if I put beads on the hook line please? Cheers. Also can you put more than one hook trace on this rig or will tangles occur? Kind regards.

They would make a good cast rig for plaice but I would use a clip down wishbone for that.

Hello I use the up and over all the time but I put about 2" length of silicon tubing over the swivel to hook length just so it dosnt tangle up around the weight

I also use tubing on my up and overs. Keeps the trace nicely away from the body 👌

scott, I’m continuing to use them side by side with the Gemini stuff when I choose that type of rig to fish. I particularly like the Terma link and I have swapped that over onto some other rigs.

Hey bud. 100lb line in my opinion is way too heavy. I'd go with 40 lb and 15 or 20lb snoods. I'd also always have another rig baited and ready to go while fishing another. I have never used changeable snoods. Love the vids. Keep it up

No such thing as a dumb question as I'm sure there will be others thinking the same thing. The imp serves as a position to clip down your hook/bait and also as the link between rig and weight. Your weight clips directly onto the imp. Hooks I either use the same knot as shown in the video or of I want a tag that helps to retain a bait, I use a blood knot. The first three turns on your Grinner/Uni knit serve no purpose. The finished knot with or with the first three twists is identical. To keep baited hooks out of our Labrador chums, hang your patting rig inside a length of down pipe bungied to your tripod leg. Nice vid Bud.

You do or don’t like them? I’m certain situations I do as it makes everything a lot easier, with multiple hooks it stops the rest of the rig getting tangled and with flat species it makes unhooked easier. 🎣

Make it easier still on yourself - instead of pre-baiting spare rigs, while your original rig is out there fishing, prepare both ends of a baiting needle with spare baits ready to go. When you reel in there is no need for any unclipping, simply snip off any damaged bait with a scissors, put the hook point into the bait needles hollow point, slide on your bait, re-clip your rig & away you go...

I can see how that would work with some baits but if you want to maximise the time you have a bait in the water then i believe changing over and re-casting gets it out quicker. You then have time to present your bait and have it ready for the next chang-over. Everyone has their own routines.

Here's a superb braid to leader knot I came across a bit back....ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4R3_znSAPz8.html Also one thing that concerns me with the shorter hooklength is that you're always going to be casting on the strength of that,not your rig body or leader. I tie my up and overs so hooklength is pretty much double and the lead will be up tight to the swivel for casting,thus no weakness,it's all on the leader. Cheers.

Thanks, I understand what you mean with the hook snood length and plan on making them longer. Fishing them as they are tonight. I have watched and learned. Thank you for the link as that is the simplest method I have seen for that knot.
