Hi there friends and welcome to another video! This started out as an August/September planning video and ended up being a little more like a podcast episode featuring a conversation about size inclusivity in knitting! I would love to hear your thoughts on size inclusivity, but please keep it respectful and kind (I will be deleting comments that are not). I say it in the video, but I am just sharing what I am personally doing and I am not intending to force my choices on anyone.
I hope you all enjoy this lil video and get some knitting/crocheting/crafting done while watching!

Thank you for mentioning the size inclusivity. As someone who is larger, I really enjoy using inclusive patterns. They don’t make me feel like im being put in the back of a corner in the store like most shops in malls in the U.K. for plus size clothing. it allows me to enjoy my hobby even more!

I am HERE for the size inclusivity discussion. It’s so encouraging as a fat knitter to see support from a straight size knitter. This is how change happens.

Love the size inclusivity talk! Not everyone is going to care, and not every designer is going to want to do it. But if it’s something we feel passionately about, we don’t have to buy from those designers! Personally, I couldn’t believe when I was the largest size in some patterns I was looking at recently (39” bust) and just chose not to buy those. It is extra work for the designer, but it’s not as if the grading all of a sudden changes at 1XL to be more difficult. If I’m paying a fair price for the pattern and it’s more inclusive, I’m in!

As a plus size woman, I would pay “extra” for a plus size version of a pattern if that is what it took. I cannot design. So I rely on patterns to knit. I don’t know how much extra work it takes to make it size inclusive. But I don’t understand why they’d want to exclude so many women. It’s cruel really. And, like I said, I will pay extra if it’s really that much work to include the extra sizes.
@ninamariaknitting
@ninamariaknitting Год назад
The sad thing is, it's not really extra work to grade patterns for larger sizes. You shouldn't have to pay extra because even though it can require a bit more work because the rate of increasing/decreasing needs to be changed, overall it's not that much extra work. If the design has a lot of cables or a lot of lace, then it can be a bit more effort but that would apply to every size. It's so sad that 1) plus size people are being excluded and then 2) that they've been made to feel that grading and designing for them is a lot of work. It shouldn't be like that.
@kaiden4937
@kaiden4937 Год назад
Not sure if this is the only reason, but I know that one reason why some patterns don’t have a ton of sizes is due to not having a diverse size range of test knitters. Test knitters aren’t paid to knit work-in-progress designs so it can be hard for smaller designers to get so many people to test out their designs in different sizes. However I’m not sure why designers who are much bigger in popularity aren’t able to find more people to test their designs since they have a much larger range of people who follow their work.
@ninamariaknitting
@ninamariaknitting Год назад
@@kaiden4937 The thing is that designers should still grade for bigger sizes and have a testing call. Often not finding testers for sizes is used as an excuse not to grade for those larger sizes. I've seen plenty of designers who've graded the pattern for larger sizes and then write on Ravelry that the size wasn't tested but it can be obtained for free if that size is made and feedback is given.
@heatherstiara8033
@heatherstiara8033 Год назад
@@kaiden4937 I saw a pattern that I’m going to buy and the designer put on there that 2X-5X hadn’t been tested and that if anybody wanted to knit that size she would give it to them for free to test. I’m still planning to buy it to support the designer, but I thought that was really nice. :)

so i havent even finished watching the video yet, i'm only at about 10:15, but as a fat person who IS one of those people being excluded from my favorite things knitwear's patterns because of her lack of sizing (even for the larger sizes she's making in that new pattern) i just want to say that your approach to how you're not going to support that designer anymore is like.......it's really great. it makes me emotional to see, honestly. this is really how you use whatever platform you have to be an ally and support others. not just being like "here's this thing i made, here's the link to the pattern, it's not size inclusive sowwy )': " but actually saying "no i *wont* link the pattern, i'm going to talk about how this person isn't doing enough so i can educate others because i didn't realize these things when i started knitting, and here are better more size inclusive designers with similar patterns you can support." so thank you. that shit made me like and subscribe and write this comment lol

I really enjoyed this video, and thank you for having the discussion about size inclusivity. I just started knitting and it’s a discussion I didn’t know was happening in the knitting/crafting world. I’m so excited to see frog come alive and I’m interested in your other knits as well. Also, I can 100% imagine the smell of sheep. I used to raise them and I would kill to smell that yarn lol!

I'm glad to see more discussions about size inclusivity happening. I haven't bought a new PetiteKnit pattern since before she was first called out, since she's been disturbingly slow to upgrade her older patterns to inclusive sizes and isn't consistent about new designs being inclusive. People say, "well she's not American", but that's sheer ignorance - fat European people exist too! This is not "just an American problem".

I can understand small designers lacking the confidence and experience to grade for bigger sizes but large designers like My Favourite Things Knitwear and Petite Knit can pay for a pattern to be graded if they don't know how to do it. It might not be the cheapest option but considering their pattern sales it's something they can afford. Plus, if larger sizes are included it means there will be more sales! It makes me so angry.

Hi! I understand your standpoint, but both Petite knit and My favorite things are European, and here in Europe we have a bit different size standards. In most shops you can't find sizes over XL, especially for women, because majority of people don't need them, you have to go to a specialized shop to buy bigger clothes. So I believe they are just following European standard and norm. But since the have become and international designers, they probably should be a bit more considerate.

I am with you to get patterns in larger sizes. But maybe it’s really difficult to find test knitters? Well, I don’t know to be honest. However it’s simply not fair! Everybody should have the same chance no matter you need xxxs or xxxxxl. I am from Europe and I know that problem from buying normal clothes. In my town the sizes of clothes start at 36, sometimes at 38 which should be medium in the USA. So for a very long time I had no chance to buy my clothes in my town as I was very thin. Ok, you could buy smaller sizes in teeny shops, but well…, they were not my cup of tea. If you need a larger size than xl you also mostly have to go to special shops,or can only buy special brands. They simply offer what people buy the most. Very frustrating and discriminatory! When I first came to the USA I was so happy about the range of sizes and since then I have bought most clothes in your country even I am no longer as thin as I used to be. I really appreciate that this young Lady is thinking about that theme! Anyway, she is a really awesome young person. Love watching her videos💕

Really love the talk about inclusivity and [redacted] knit designer. I’ve fallen trap to loving her designs and feeling the need to “make it work”. Like using a larger needle size to make it looser and have the largest size fit etc. It’s definitely a really toxic mindset and made me feel bad about myself for not being able to fit her biggest size and I imagine many others have felt this way too. I don’t think designers truly understand or care about the toll it can take on peoples mental health to experience these things. Especially when she is such a popular designer. I made her design for a sample at the yarn store I work at and I’m kinda regretting it as I don’t want to put other people in that position when they look up the pattern :( it’s definitely something im working on to be mindful of who I support and show myself more respect by realizing it’s not my fault I can’t fit into her patterns lol thank you so much for talking about this and being honest about your thoughts❤️❤️

Thank you for sharing your experience, and it's terrible because you're right, these designers probably have no idea what it is like/the toll it can take on people's mental health. And to be totally honest I don't know either, but just because I haven't experience something doesn't mean it isn't happening and isn't something that should be addressed, especially by someone I would consider to be one of the most-knit knitwear designers that I know of. (I hope that made sense)
