In this video we'll look at a scratch build of a Valco Supro Spectator 510 circuit from spare parts and old 'junk'. This circuit is similar to the early Fender Champ amps and was also used by Valco in the Model 1610 Comet. We will take a look at the unfinished build, talk about the schematic, and take a look at the final product made into a 1950s vintage record player box left over from another project.

Well, mister, you did it! YOU GOT YOUR OWN PLAYLIST!!!! I had to find a spot for your videos after you’ve shown how much you know about amps, guitars, and related! I was sure the moment has come when you shared a little of your life battles in marriage, and proved to be as human as the rest of us!!! I’ve told you once, first time I’ve seen a couple of your videos, I didn’t care for it, since you’re such a humble, simple language spoken guy, that it seemed to me you were “experimenting” with amps! I insisted a little more and understood that you really know what you do, and don’t act like some techs that feel so glorious and big, you’re kind and humble, something I really admire on you! Congrats and thank you for sharing everything with us!

Also, one thing I’d love to see you explain, in details, is how you guys achieve such sweet sound out of amplifiers? Is that the low wattage? Is it the how loud your you’re playing it (since we can’t judge by videos)? I see many guitarists get to any amp and dial the same or similar sweetness with little or no effort, but I just can’t! I’m not a pro player, but an enthusiast who loves guitars and amps that would love to learn to play better, hence the desire of reaching some knowledge on the subject! That would be a very valuable video I’ve never seen anyone doing it on RU-vid with clear explanations! That one and witch effects are used on each song from the 60’s - 70’s rock n roll! Thank you!

Nice sounding amp. I like how you turn old junk Into useful stuff. Amazing you can find the time to build all this stuff with a new baby in the house. It's hard for me to find time for anything with my 3 and 5 year old. Thanks for the cool videos.

I have a mysterious tube amp problem that maybe you can look into regarding the SUPRO 1650RT ROYAL REVERB (reissue). I am having tube Rectifier issues that is making me very frustrated and costing me money. FIRSTLY you should know there are two (2) models within the 1650RT line. A 35/45/60 rectifier config knob, and a 35/60 toggle switch line. I have the 35/60 watt toggle switch version. Bought mine USED and out of warranty. Both versions have DUAL RECTIFIERS. the 60 watt (AB) mode uses a digital rectifier that I have to crank up to 3/4 and I do get some gain, but the 35 watt (A) mode uses a tube rectifier - The CLEANS sound angelic - really nice but absolutely no gain in the 35 watt mode. I bought TWO new rectifier tube and both tubes did Not fire up, just dead in the water which lead me to believe the TUBE RECTIFIER section of this amp is down. Any way for me to test it? Maybe something simple in the amp is unplugged or unjacked? I really could use your input OR ANYONE READING THIS feel free to chime-in. Thanks in advance - I looked everywhere for any forums on the subject - but nothing. HELP !!

Nicely Done... You mentioned early in the video you have enough parts to scratch build.. You ever considered scratch building bigger amps? like 20+ watts with a 12 inch speaker etc? i could see a market for your amps.

I may do more of that in the future. My main hurdle is cabinetry. I don't have the facilities or tools for building cabinets.

Glad you found a use for that box, I knew you eventually would. I was surprised you didn't use it on the build with the original amp, but it all works out in the end....
@TheGuitologist
@TheGuitologist 8 лет назад
The way it was mounted in the old record player meant I would have to keep that turntable and platform. The size of the amp was perfect for a cigar box, and I already had a ton of those. It turned out more interesting this way, I think. :)

Hi Brad, Really nice job on the scratch build amp. I've been waiting for a build with all the parts you have. It would be cool to see more as your able. I'm a real fan of the simple single ended amps. Maybe a 5C1 with a 6SJ7 pentode pre amp. Your amp sounds great. Take care, C.
@TheGuitologist
@TheGuitologist 8 лет назад
Thanks Cass. I have another chassis the same size as this one with more holes in it, so I might build something into that at some point. We'll see. I try to keep things loose on this channel and try new things and see where it leads. I have a passion for saving stuff from dumpsters and upcycling (yeah, I know, there's a whole silly, trendy movement of doing this, but I'm not trying to be a hipster, just being stubborn and frugal).

Wow i really like that Hofner guitar... i just simply like how Hofner combined TV and radio tubes in their amps, example Hofner Orgaphonn 45MH, had 2x PL84's (basically EL86 but different heater voltage) and squezed around 30W out of them... I still wonder how after going million times trough the schematic...

Hey, nice video. I always wanted to build my own amp's and pedal's, but considering I am a utter noob, I don't want to move on beyond than just changing over guitar/bass electronic's without having anyone over looking what I am doing, and or leaning from RU-vid. I also have a Vox Pathfinder 15R amp. Vox has stop making them some years ago. One build I love to do is to build my own version of that amp, but what I like to do is to just build the pre amp stage in a pedal form. That way I can still get the tone I want at open mic nights, and have everything going through in to the mixing desk.

I know this is from some time ago, but curious as to whether the magnet from the speakers affect the tubes being so close in proximity.

I’ve always wondered why the hot tubes don’t char the wood case (or set it on fire), or (depending on the design) the grill cloth? Did they use flame-retardant on these even back in to ‘50s and ‘60s? One thing I would add if I were going to build an amp like this (given your chassis already has the extra tube sockets) would be an ‘alternate’ input stage in parallel with your 6SL7 that uses a 12AX7, plus a switch to allow you to choose which one you like the best (or in case the tube blows during a gig)! You could also sub a 12AT7/12AU7/12AY7 and experiment with those, too. 😎

Lovely amp build and a great vid up until the screaming baby! Should be a public warning st the beginning. Some of us listen to vids like these through good systems and at high volumes so unexpected screaming can be quite an unpleasant shock. Good stuff.

Great Build! The amp sounds fantastic. Do you see any problems with adding a reverb tank/circuit to this unit? I was thinking that a fender reverb tank might be a great mod for this build, but I know it's a great build without it. Would a reverb circuit improve this amp, or not? What do you think?

Nice amp.-If you have a schematic and it is not online anywhere, do you put it online for people in the future? I know if not for the guys in the past we would not have access to a lot of schematics. Thanks for the knowledge you share.

A great sounding amp, but I doubt I could afford it, even if you just broke even on the parts and labor..... I was just curious, if you kept these for you own use. Right now, I'm as broke as it gets, but damn if I was was in the market for one sweat little bedroom/studio amp I would jump on that ... I try and, I mean just try, to do some conversions of old tubes amps. I have one I made from a old tube real to real tape recorder. It already had a PA channel so it was pretty easy to convert to a guitar amp. I used it's original case as the cabinet and basically just removed all the the parts related to the tape (motors, pulleys and related parts and electronics). I don't think I changed anything else, it's loud (crunchy) and quiet (low hum) as it gets ... and sounded great. Looks ugly as freak though...

That is so weird! (not the amp, the amp is very cool, love the old Supro / Valco stuff) But your baby, I know this sounds , like bullshit but when my daughter was a baby until about age 3 if she was fussy and throwing a fit we would crank on some Ozzy, anything from Crazy Train to Mr Crowley and she would settle right down it was the weirdest thing, no other hard rock bands worked just Ozzy, at about two years old she would sit in a chair and rock back and forth to the music it was hilarious! That was in the early 90's so no video unfortunately but it was funny! Thanks for sharing!!

Can you explain what "Point to Point Wiring" actually means? Heard that for years, never quite understood its definition. I know "Quality" and "Vintage" Amps always boast of Wire to Wire.. New Amps (unless expensive boutique) are not point to point but some sort of pre-fab components.
@TheGuitologist
@TheGuitologist 8 лет назад
"Point to point" or "PTP" is a method of wiring where extra wires are eliminated and where each component is hand-wired from one connection terminal to the next directly, rather than being mounted on a board with wires running from it. Most boutique builders today tend to mount components on a board and run wires at right angles and do a lot of stuff to improve the internal cosmetics of the amp. PTP, by contrast, looks messier because there's no board on which to mount components in neat rows. Board mounting has the advantage of making scaling for multiple builds at once easier and thus more economical than PTP hand wiring. It also makes service diagrams of component locations possible, so servicing is easier. In a PTP amp, if you want to service it, you have to trace out the signal paths by eye. Hope that helps! Good question.
