Update Mag. Mount & Diamond MAT50 | HamRadio 

😂 Being a bit obsessed with having things neat and in order is a curse I tell you... I could do more videos if I could stop earlier and tell myself "good enough". Yes the 4mm banana plug sockets don't look too bad. Of course I had to sand the bottom, screw them in tightly and reapply paint there as well. 🙄

I have a terrible ground with my single large mag mount. I'm still in two minds about buying a MAT-50 and trying it. I'd probably try adjusting the antenna length too for best tube once MAT was attached

@johnr6218 I would not expect miracles from its small size. Maybe get a 30x30cm aluminum sheet from the hardware store and a few magnets or use some metal mesh material that you usually put over a light shaft to prevent leaves from getting in or some faraday cloth. Or borrow a different mag. mount from a friend for testing. Also check the coaxial / cable connection. Bad contacts can do terrible things as I have learned the hard way. 😉

Thanks for the info Jürgen! Did you have to tune the 40m radial or did you just grab a 10m wire and it was good enough?

@@labcat73 The cable is about 10m long. No tuning needed. I also thought that a magnetic base wouldn't work because my car has a panoramic glass roof. Only about a tenth is metal. But success proves me right ;-)

Terrible english though. I need to start writing a script for these things. Winging does not really work for these kinds of videos. No I don't have a single magnet mag. mount, but I thought about deliberately ruining ground connection with some plexiglass sheets between car roof and magnet and see what happens then when connecting the MAT50. Maybe some time in summer...

@@labcat73 Go to a ham fest and pick up a used single magnet mount for €10.- Or I'll bring one when I drive down in May and you can join me for a SOTA and make a video at the same time 🙂

- Nope, they are normal bolts on my mag. mount. Nothing stops them from twisting. - The extra plastic rubber shoe thingy still goes on top of the glued on plastic sheets, maybe an afterthought as the plastic sheet alone does not really prevent scratching 100%. Anyway one should not drag the magnets when taking it off... Just pull on one magnet upwards and tilt. - Well this was just an experiment because I was curious. I didn't buy it because I needed it. I just wanted to know if there is some special black Diamond HF magic involved. I think it can be a nice tool for improving grounding when you have an antenna mounted to your roof rail, but there are millions of other ways to achieve the same. So whether it's worth the price is up to you. 🤷‍♂️

@@labcat73 or you could just find some silver foil and stick to a flexible car magnet and stick that too the roof :D done that in the past too lol

Hi! Ja das könnte man ausprobieren. Die dreieckige Platte oben drauf hat nur in der Mitte ein 4-kant Loch, also ggf. noch ein paar Beilagscheiben unterlegen. Mit Silikon hätte ich das auch noch ein bisschen abdichten können. Ist mir aber natürlich erst nachher eingefallen 😉. 73
