Dude, you are a lifesaver. I ran into this problem with OCLP 1.3 and Sonoma 14.2. I normally wait for a while before upgrading but decided to be reckless. Safe Mode did the trick for me. Had to do it 3 times. but eventually finished, then again in Safe mode had to install the root patches. Next boot without Safe Mode, it was stuck and I was about to power cycle, when suddenly the bar shot forward and now I am running 14.2 on my Macbook air. Salute 🖖
Holding down shift and booting into safe mode worked for me. I had updated using the System Settings, instead of the previous times using OCLP to patch first. Thanks.
Sonoma 14.1 works very well on my Mac Pro 5.1. Right after installing OCLP 1.1, I upgraded the Mac OS and during the system installation the process stopped. I restarted the Mac by holding the "option" button and when the startup screen appeared, I selected "EFI Boot". The Mac turned on again and the installation process was completed. After installation, bluetooth and wifi did not work as usual. Using a cable keyboard, I did "Post-Install Root Patch" in OCLP 1.1 and everything works fine
My old pal, Mac mini 2014 got stuck while upgrading from Sonoma to Sequoia using OCLP 2.0.2 through a bootable USB drive. Your booting into Safe mode process saved me. Thanks for your clean and detailed solution. :)
This is the same as what happened to me when I told you about a malfunction the previous time in the 14.2 update, and when I entered safe mode, the installation was completed, I activated the patch, and the system became stable ... You are a really great person for your efforts
Bro, fantastic! Since weeks my Pro stucks on logon and thx to u and your solution with „Safe Mode“ I‘m able to logon again. You and my son („Dad, never give up“) saved me around 1.000€ for a new Mac! Great!
I can confirm that this works! My mid-June 2012 MBP is now running Sonoma 14.4, w/ OCLP 1.4.3, successfully. It was stuck on the Apple logo screen, but I rebooted and selected the EFI boot drive + Shift and it finally finished and booted up! Then I just patched the MBP boot drive, and now it's fully functional. Thank you!
I did a full install on my MacBook Pro 15" 2015 11,4 and all went well, I did this after the trouble seen by Mr Mac and yourself. I didnt mind reinstalling programs as most passwords are in my keychain and others I remember by second nature. Up and running with all programs and 14.1 installed in 2 and a half hours. Using opencore of course
Hey Jessie. Inadvertently you solved nagging problem. You may recall several weeks ago my email saying that Photoshop ran very slowly on my unsupported Mac running Monterey. Turns out, I had not reinstalled the OpenCore boot files after upgrading to Monterrey from Big Sur. After hearing you address this problem earlier today, I went through the upgrade process again, reinstalled the OpenCore files, and all is well. Thanks.
I know several software programs but the hardware end of it I am at a loss. I wasn't able to connect to WIFI so I watched your video probably four times before I attempted to load the root patches after I had updated to 14.1 OMG it worked!Thank you sooo much from a newbie!
Okayy, better try this method instead kasey, bcs the "upgrade" installment method showing failure for 3-4 times, I couldn't figure out how to disable the AMFI 😭 But atleast I could entered the safe mode to back things up, thanks for the tips Jessie!
Had the same issue. Fix: force shutdown then restart and press and hold the shift key until you get to this point. The screen should "zoom out" and the installation will finish w/o further issues.
Thanks! Fixed. Just used these tips (PAM/NVRAM) on my White 2010 macbook 7,1, which stuck doing an update from Ventura straight to Sonoma 14.2! Going like a real champ with 16GB ram and 4TB ssd. I also used a USB hub and external keyboard until my root patches were in.
I already had 14.1 installed via opencore legacy patcher and unfortunately attempted to upgrade to 14.1.1 via General->SoftwareUpdate and of course my system would hang on a boot. I followed your video and SUCCESS. From safe mode I could run the legacy patcher to apply the necessary drivers. Thanks a million!!!! I now have 14.1.1 running
Thanks - needed this today with 7,2 MacbookAir that got badly stuck on reboot, this worked. I think it was associated with a big jump in OCLP version on venture 0.6.8 to 1.4.1 while on Ventura. Went all out and installed sonoma 14.2., had the stuck progress bar the did the safe mode shift button, on 14.4 using 1.4.1. 😅. This video was extremely helpful. Many thanks.
After rebooting, selecting the OCLP EFI, and reaching the MacOS HD selection screen, press and hold the space bar and after a few moments you should see additional options to boot from, including the "Reset NVRAM" executable. Select it and proceed as indicated from there.
@@JessiesFlying I didn't say that was THE solution. In the video, it was suggested trying it to see if it helps users be able to conitinue the upgrade or a reboot into safe mode. I only gave an easier alternative on how to do such task which is simpler than doing a multi-button combo press which varies depending on the hardware kb you have. Everyone has a spacebar and that tid-bit of info isn't as easily found online by newcomers to Mac's.
Thanks for a great troubleshooting video. Had this same stuck screen issue and could not bypass it. Didn't know about the safe mode. Using that helped me bypass the issue and go to the login screen. Out of curiosity I used the Cmd + V to output the verbose information and my issue seemed to be something with some bluetooth drivers. After reapplying the OCLP post patch that fixed the issue.
This happened to my late '13 MBP. I hadn't even updated yet. Was still on 14.0. Only updated OCLP to 1.21, updated root patch in preparation for the upgrade and got stuck after restart. Tried everything. Ended up creating a new partition on the internal SSD, installing there using a Sonoma USB I'd already created, installing OCLP 1.3 and restoring to the new partition. Long process but worked for me.
Your first option NVram reset got things going. I was stuck on the boot screen forever and I was getting irritated. A simple NVram reset was all that was needed. 😊thanks
@@JessiesFlying it’s running extremely slow though, and I just found out that my install only works in safe mode, it freezes when attempting to boot normal mode.
@@JessiesFlying I forgot I had Bitdefender antivirus installed on my unsupported OS which was causing the problem. Uninstalled it and rooted it again and all is good
Very interesting! I couldn’t get mine to work so I went back to Maverick and now to try to upgrade to Sonoma or something more than Maverick or Catalina. I’m still learning about OCLP for my 2012 MacBook Pro 9,2
Mine MacBook Pro Touch Bar 2017 did update without any issues (OCLP 1.1 and Sonoma 14.1). Had Sonoma 14 and OCLP 1.0 already installed and upgraded to 1.1 before upgrading macOS.
It worked on my MacBook Pro 2012 too. After it got stuck with the progress bar at about one third, rebooting manually to the efi boot and then booting into safe mode, checking if Sonoma 14.1 was installed (yes!), opening Open Core patcher and installing the root patches and after another reboot everything seems to be fine
How do you reboot “manually”? I am frustrated as any recommendation given here fails to get me beyond the “log in page”! I also don’t make it with the “shift” pressing into safe boot. Anything else I could “press” to get the system running?
Hi @chapeaubay , with rebooting 'manually' I meant a hard reboot. Then you select the efi boot and when you get the selection of boot drives (like Macintosh HD) you select the boot drive while holding the shift key and then press enter. If your Mac keyboard (built-in or bluetooth) doesn't do that you should you could use a usb keyboard. I hope that will help get it fixed
@@JessiesFlying In the end it didn't work. I was able to install OCLP and boot without USB and install the root patches, yet the Mac was not booting except for in safe mode. In Safe mode it worked partially, but without safe mode it rebooted inself at about 40%.
Dear friend, Unfortunately, the loading process still doesn't work. I've set the root „rights“ again with open core. Could it be because my version of Open Core is 1.0.x? Unfortunately, I don't have internet with wifi in Save Mode. Alternatively, I have an old Windows PC. Can I use that to create a new version on USB and install it on the Mac? Thank you 🙏🏼 for your help.
Thank you so much for this very quick and easy fix (just pressing shift on reboot to enter safe mode) for my Late 2013 iMac. Up and running again in just a few minutes. 👍
@@marcozmp That’s good to hear! Did you also install the Post-Install Root Patches? Also check if Bluetooth is enabled, and check if your mouse is switched on and recharged / batteries full. Finally try to reconnect your mouse.
WARNING!!! Following my previous comment, I should just say that if your updating an Early 2008 Mac Tower, you must be patient. Thanks to @JessieFlying I got there in the end. Absolutely boot in safe mode. Most importantly though, each stage does take an enormous amount of time. All in all its taken me three days to complete. Once leaving the update to run over night! Yes I did have to restart on occasions because it was stuck but most of the time when you think its stuck its just taking longer than you think. So here I am. My beloved old mac has Ventura on it and is running splendidly with no loss of data. A huge thankyou to @Jessiesflying and the Opencore team for enabling us to continue using these wonderful machines.
Hey I just started the new update and I have the white background (I’m in safe mode) I open Opencore patcher and press post install root patch but it says everything is already installed even though I’m still having the background issue and slow performance, what should I do?
I tried to upgrade to Sonoma and my keyboard and mouse wouldn’t work. I had to drop back to the previous OS. I am on a 2009 5,1 dual 3.33, 48 gig ram, metal 8 gig Asus graphics card 590. My OS is on a 1T SSD and I have 8T storage. My old Canon printer no longer works with the new OS but it’s needing to be updated anyway. My other issue is that I have to press the power on button 5 or 6 times before I hear the chime and get the machine to boot. I think my power supply is about to go and needs replacing. A new used one is only $40 dollars. I will hold off until we see a patch for the new OS.
Thank you so much Jessie! Your videos help a lot in this painful journey. However I'm still missing the last step, booting without USB (9:40 in your video) Although I installed Open Core to my internal drive, EFI is not showing up when I eject the USB and reboot. It only works with USB. Any advice on what to do?
@@JessiesFlying Yes, I used the "Build and Install Open Core" and then chose my Apple SSD and then EFI. Then Open Core asks me if I want to reboot, but if I do (and eject the USB), EFI boot is not showing up in the boot selector.
Big Bug; seen by many too. we been multi boot for years both internal and external drive with different OS x version. Sonoma put a wrinkle in this by altering or updating the older os x version to sonoma without asking or initiating the update. A back up of profile was done so no data loss, but issue is we didn't want sonoma on the drive yet and it cause a failure to boot finding that the target drive was no report a version 14 and not the version that was installed and the boot failed. Because you can not downgrade only option was to do clean format and install. only for it to happen yet again. As of 2024 no solution found. This reminds of us Apple and forcing U2 music to every device purchase by the public whether the want it or not.
I just tried updating the current update. It seemed to work but when my computer gets to the long in page and I attempt to long in it is on a continuous buffing. Please help 😢
encountered a problem installing the OS after downloading it. Although I successfully downloaded it, when I reached the step to select the local macOS installer, the window displayed 'Install macOS Sonoma (requires High Sierra)' in a faded color. I would appreciate your advice on this.
Thank you Jessie for your help. I have a MacBook Pro (Retina 13-inch, Mid 2014). My macOS is the Unarchived version X 10.10.5. Do I need to upgrade to High Sierra before upgrading to Sonoma? Your further assistance is appreciated. Warm regards, David
Oh man, I tried to use the Safe Mode method but the progress bar freezes halfway through. I’m all out of ideas. I was trying to run Sonoma 14.5 on a late 2013 iMac. 😊

I didn't get stuck during the update and I was using the open core legacy 1.2.1. However, I couldn't login to my Apple account after everything was set up.
I prepared for a serious "fight", but after installing OCLP 1.1 on my Boot NVMe Drive, my 2009 MacPro 4,1/5,1(with 2x X5690, 96GB RAM, AMD Radeon RX Vega-56 & upgraded WiFi-BT Module) updated to Sonoma 14,1 through a OCLP-1.1 created USB Installer in less than 30 min. without any issues, it didn't end up stuck during the install & i even didn't need to run the OCLP-1.1 Root-Patches after the update because WIFi & Bluetooth were running...only needed a wired Keyboard in the Recovery Mode of the MacOS Sonoma Installer...
Hi. Might be a bit much to ask. Early 2008 mac tower. Intel. El Capitan. I did Pram and the shift option. The time remaining bar does indeed appear but every time it jams at 1 minute. I’ve even left it over night! No joy. 😢 so close. Now I’m stuck. Thank you in advance for your help. ❤
I have 2016 macbook pro touchbar 4 thunderbolt running on latest mac os monterey available for my mac. i used the open patcher v.1.5.0 i followd all the progress till it booted up and came to the login password screen, after i put my password, them i enter it, it goes to “analytics” just like at minute 8:39 . after i click continue, the screen goes black and back to login password again, then i repeat the progres input password enter, black screen, back to login password again and again, any suggestions that you can help me with my problem? thankyou, hope u can help me sir 🙏🏻
Hi Jessie I have a 2013 cylinder Mac and it was working fine with Sonoma using 3.1 open core… until I installed 1.4.1 and now I’m locked out. I tried everything you described in this video.. I was hoping to have it come out of its start up coma… Would you have any other suggestions to offer it would be tremendously appreciated….. 😊 Thanks
@jessiesflying. Hi Jessie! How do I join the discord group? A quick question please. Can I update my mbp early 2011 to ventura? The mbp runs smoothly on Monterey patch.
Hello there ! I can't reach safe mode neither recovery mode, it seems there is no recovery partition or something... How can I launch it, restore it, bypass it ? This is driving me crazy.

I reached safe mode but the install do not continue after login. I launch the patch but at restart it keeps remaining at load stuck@@JessiesFlying edit : I deleted kextfiles under /Volumes/Macintosh HD/Library/Extensions except Highpoint and Softraid reboot and it finally boot ! thanks for the support. edit 2 : it worked once only, after root patches and reboot; the load stuck is still here. edit 3 : tried verbose mode to target issue, at the stuck point, the verbose mode quit to Apple logo and an empty progress bar.
