Many are having to make concessions and going back to family communal living. We just finished building my daughter and son in law a tiny home on our property. My son and his family live in an apartment above my husbands shop. My MIL in a mobile home here also. Neighbor is daughter of my heart and her family. We call it “The Hill”. It helped them all in rough times and hopefully will help us as we get older in the future. I do understand doing all you can, being exhausted, and yet knowing you’re doing the right thing. This is SO where we are. Lost our house in a house fire, need to rebuild, trying to figure out how my aging, less mobile mother and disabled brother might need to fit into that picture...

Thank you for sharing the message about moving your In-Laws to the farm. I was fortunate to retire and combine houses with my mother-in-law, who was then 91(and lived halfway across the country from where we lived then). We were blessed to have five excellent years with her, which meant that she was able to be in her home at a time when others might have to go to an assisted living facility. She got to, once again, enjoy having chickens because we could care for them for her. I do not regret a moment we got to enjoy and help her when she needed it. Regarding accessibility, we made sure to have things like ramps in place before we needed them and found out this allowed her to walk outside and around her house; she had been avoiding climbing the stairs to her porch.
Tracey, you are a gem and your MIL is as cute as they make em!! Every time you catch her in a video she makes either smile or laugh. I can see where Gene gets his sense of humor. I hope y’all have many more years to enjoy each other on your farm.
Just imagine old time settlers digging trenches by hand . Now a days it's much more efficient to dig with the machines . Your parents are fortunate to be able to move closer to the people that can help & love them !!!
This is so cool for your Pop and Mom to live in. Just absolutely adorable. A white picket fence in front of Mr Cool with a beautiful small tree planted in front of the fence and climbing roses all around would be so neat in the front of their new home. There’s so many ways to cottage up that home. I’m so excited for them. ❤

Good choice going with the beadboard! Lends that "cottage feel", too! Also, it IS much cheaper, when you consider all the time & expense with just drywall. Excited to see it all come together! Your channel just popped up on my feed. My husband was a building contractor for 50 years so I totally understand what you are undertaking. We recently moved closer to my daughter and son-in-law because of health issues. I wish we had a situation like your in-laws so we could be on the same property as our kids. So smart with the wider doorways. Also make's it much, much easier if a walker is needed later on. Another thing to have early on is blocking/studs extra in the shower & toilet walls, makes it super easy to put in grab bars later when knees & hips don't want to work as well. Smart design
We are doing much the same thing except hubby and I are selling our 2 properties and buying a bigger piece of land. Both make a total of 10 acres. We are looking for at least 30 to 50 acres. My son and daughter along with our grands will have their homes and we will have ours far enough apart for privacy but close enough to walk to each others places. All will be over basements for storage. Then eventually we will have a community "kitchen" for family get togethers, canning etc. It will have a TV area with a washer & dryer. We are going to insulate ourselves but the company will install a vapor barrier before they side it. Hubby wants to use Rockwool. We have a 14x40 building that someone did the pink insulation but didn't put a vapor barrier and now we have to gut the building and have it spray foamed. We use it for storage. It's 20 years old now. We will have 2 mini spits. One at each end and tied to one outside unit. We are in northern middle TN.

The reason for at least 2 mini splits. lol My son is high functioning autistic so when we are gone (I'm 60 and hubby is 62) the family can support each other physically, mentally and hubby and I are setting them up as self sufficient as possible. Canning, dehydrating, freeze drying as well as a large garden with veggies, fruits and my daughter is learning about wild edibles, tinctures etc. We even make our own soaps. :D You have a blessed day and be weather aware. It looks like we are once again in the danger zone.

You are very generous and supportive of your parents. Its a refreshing and heartwarming thing to do, especially as I'm a retired nurse who has seen too many elders deposited in nursing homes. One suggestion with the open ceilings, is to close off the bathroom. This will provide more privacy, restrict the humidity from the showers, enable the space to be warmed with a small heater and limit odors through the house. It looks wonderful. All the best!

It’s a beautiful thing you and gene are doing for mom and pop…family is so important…having health issues is no fun I know as I’m 73 and disabled for last 9 yrs and have my granddaughter living with me as my carer and my daughter…her mum inly lives 5 mins away….so having mom and pop living in your farm independently is wonderful…a wrap around porch will be lovely and is like outdoor living space as you can have b que area and seating…god bless you all c and I hope everything works out….

Everyone seems to be struggling these days, inflation, etc. We all seem to be seeking multiple streams of income just to get by, with tight budgets. This is a fantastic idea - shed to tiny home. I live in my cabin on my sister and BIL land. Its amazing!! Its a Graceland shed to cabin. One of the best ideas ever!!! There is nothing like them bringing that shed into its place!! So exciting!! Thats so important to see familiar things in the new place. Very smart move.
Thank the Lord for all y’all doing for mom and pops! it’s great having your parents with you while you can. I got my mom living with me in the house I chose moving here to Georgia, as it has its own little apartment downstairs so she can have her independence and a little bit of privacy even in her 80s. Everything’s coming along nice! Gean and his parents are doing a wonderful job and Chase and everybody else helping over there to get things done as they have. I told you you would like the beadboard, for the looks and for the cost. I used it in my tiny house and used molding to go inbetween the panels i also put on the ceiling- making it a barrel ceiling.
I had a 16x36 shed to Studio delivered in mid October. We are on the same path friend! Had the company do my electric and light service. Also had them do my wall. Have a hybrid mini split. Did plywood instead of sheet rock. Used found trim boards, bought so much from Habitat for Humanity. Almost done, but have to do the plumbing in Spring as we are in our below zero winter season! My kids have helped immensely! Happy for you to have the folks close to home!
I have to agree with the comment below. People need to pull their families together again, if they possibly can. Then each generation can help the other. You did a great job drawing up the plans for the whole inside, Tracey. A person really can live in a much smaller space, with everything you need. Can't wait to see the progress. I have a mini split in an apartment in my daughter’s house. The outside unit sits on a concrete pad outside on a different wall and different floor than the inside unit. This would help the looks of the front of your home. I love my mini split. It’s been running great for over three years. Js. IMO
Aww! Loved Pop singing along on the Elvira song! My stepdad had Parkinson’s Disease! I’m a new subscriber and it’s a little after 4am I’m off to work in a little while. I am working after many years on Social Security but my husband lost his job summer 2021 because the owner sold the farm he managed and our house was part of his salary. We had to scramble to move ended up in his brothers tiny camper. My son and daughter-in-love said we could put something here and we chose a shed home! We did a few basics and are living in it while renovating it as we get money a little at a time to fix it! I cried watching your video! You and your husband are truly heroes for helping them ❤❤❤❤
Our floor plan has been our greatest challenge I got a side utility with door in middle 12x24 and we are still trying to figure out how to place everything! My profile pic on here is day it was delivered!
