UPDATE: Wi-Fi works! However the new Big Sur betas have broken the method in this video. Fear not though, as you can use barrykm's micropatcher to install (compatibility is the same). Instructions and download (see release 0.5.1) are here: github.com/bar...

This video shows you the basic steps required to get macOS 11.0 Big Sur to boot on unsupported Macs. Usability and reliability of this process varies wildly system to system, and it is thought to work best on Mid 2012 MacBook Pros and 2013 iMacs at this point. Performing this method is solely to allow you to experiment with macOS 11.0 if you are on an older Mac. If you are looking for a reliable installation, I strongly recommend you wait until a "patcher" becomes available from someone such as dosdude1. That said, the install is perfectly fast and stable on the Mid 2012 MBP, although Wi-Fi doesn't function yet.

Terminal command 1: sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.security.libraryvalidation.plist DisableLibraryValidation -bool true
Terminal command 2: launchctl setenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES $PWD/Hax.dylib
Last resort step (you will need to figure out how to do this a bit!):
on macOS Catalina or another OS that can access your Big Sur APFS partition, delete telemetry from /System/Library/UserEventPlugins/com.apple.telemetry.plugin (delete the folder) (appears to be un-necessary on mid 2012 MBP or similar)

K P Late 2013 iMacs are not officially supported, who told you that? Only 2014 and later iMacs are supported with Big Sur.

Hi guys! REMEMBER TO BACK UP YOUR DATA! IF YOU ARE INSTALLING BETA 3 OR NEWER THIS METHOD IS OUTDATED. USE: github.com/barrykn/big-sur-micropatcher Small mistake in the video, I dragged the hax.dylib to the Users folder instead of the Home folder. Just drag into the pane that has Applications, Documents, Desktop, etc in it. Have you got a no entry sign? I’m told this could work and is easier than the other solution: sudo nvram boot-args='-no_compat_check' Full no entry sign guide: www.reddit.com/r/BigSurPatcher/comments/hekcnv/guide_on_how_to_install_big_sur_on_a1425/ OR: lynx.pink/big-sur-unsupported-macs-tldr/#/common_issues/crossed_circle Run the above command in Terminal on a previous partition with Catalina or another OS on it. Don’t forget this is very early in the Beta stage of Big Sur so there are bound to be issues. UPDATE 24/06/20: instructions for Wi-Fi fix courtesy of iPixelGalaxy! 50/50 success rate so far though! So for the wifi fix you download the kext in a working version of macos. Then you paste it into the system library extensiosn folder of big sur. Then you run the chown, kmutil, and chmod in Big Sur?

so I installed Big Sur just fine using the beta profiles. my problem is it won't update. It tells me there is a update but it won't install and wants to redownload whatever update there is. I download it, it reboots. it says its installing but then when it goes back to desktop it wants to download the update again.

You are running it from the wrong Recovery OS. You must run it from a Big Sur recovery OS, if you do not have the Recovery HD partition, then you must make a bootable USB out of the Install macOS Beta .app, which you can find tutorials for on Google, or ask on the discord server. ^_^

I’ve installed this on a Late 2013 iMac 2.9 quadcore i5, GT 750M and it runs absolutely fine, no issues with Wifi or anything, runs perfectly fine.

Yay, it's probably because it's almost the same as the Late 2013 MacBook Pro, which is a supported machine. Apple should not have cut the 2013 iMac LOL

When you say after...you mean in macOS recovery terminal line? Also do you run the disable line first. Then run that other line? Or do you just do it all in one and run that one?

It’s not required for 2012 usually, I did not need to remove it for example, and people on the discord server with 2012 machines generally did not have to remove it.

Installing on a 2010 MBP (7,1) as we speak. Had to create bootable installer. Now just waiting for it to load. About 75% at time of writing. You’ll need to enter nvram boot-args=“-no_compat_check” in recovery terminal first

Hi, please join the discord server for help, they can help you better than me seeing as you have important data. Don’t worry! You can always recover your files from your drive externally too. But try to ask the folks on Discord in the description. They will probably tell you to run the compat check NVRAM command.

Thank you very much for this nice guide! It works fine on my iMac 21,5" late 2013. But now, I have a question: Can I do a factory reset to erase all my data on the Mac, because it doesn't run very smooth (because of the files I have on the Mac). If I can, how should I do this? I am afraid that when I reset and reinstall macOS, the beta will be deleted and a downgrade to Catalina will be done, which I don't want. Thanks!

You can make a bootable USB from the Beta .app and install it on a blank partition, then expand the partition to fill the drive later.

Yes, if we can get the HD 3000 graphics working, you will have to wait and see. Also if your laptop has AMD Radeon HD 5xxx/6xxx, you will probably need to disable that.

Macbook Air 11" mid-2012 on Catalina 10.15.2 here. Works fine all the way through the installation, then after about 30 minutes plus another 20 min of the "1 minute left" part I get this message : "An error occured during preparation of the software update." (something similar at least - this was translated from french) This happens in the macOS update assistant so I'm able to click menus at the top. I performed the install twice and when this happened at first I clicked OK to dismiss the error then I was left with only a gray screen and the mouse cursor. Could do nothing but attempt a hard reboot. Any ideas? :v

First I had the same problem, but you can fix it very easy: in the terminal of the recovery, type in the command, but WITHOUT "sudo" at the beginning, so the command should be like this: nvram boot-args='-no_compat_check'

@@GameRoof1 Quick Update - apparently, I somehow entered the nvram boot-args="-no_compat_check" incorrectly :man_facepalming: and thus the terminal did not recognise it, so first, I entered nvram boot-args and then it returned with nvram boot-args no_compat_check After that, I copy the whole line, add the " and -, hit enter and restart - worked like a charm Thanks everybody - after 14 hours on this, it sounds like a win)

MBP 13" mid 2014 - OS X Yosmite is my Mac's original OS. Call it surgery or operation, yesterday I opened up the base cover and got the computer working again. When Apple release the stable retail version of this new OS, I will be upgrading to it, assuming that my Mac meets the minimum system requirements. I would love to hear of anybody that has managed to run this new OS on a 2014 model Mac successfully.

Marco Zampiron If you see the no entry sign ⛔️ you need to enter this command in the terminal: sudo nvram boot-args="-no_compat_check" Enter that command on your installation of Catalina in the terminal and then reboot into Big Sur. If you don’t have a partition with Catalina on it to enter that command, you need to enter Recovery Mode on your Mac and then type the command there and reboot. If you do it through recovery mode you do not have to write the word sudo before it. Reboot and you should be able to get into Big Sur.

Mike McDonnell use bootable usb made from Big Sur installer app instead of recovery os since that’s Catalina (if it’s in Light Mode it’s Catalina recovery)
