Just a helpful hint on removing the transmitter - there are two pressure clips, one on each side of the transmitter. I use an old blood glucose test strip, slide it up from the bottom (slim) on each side of the transmitter. You will feel and hear it disengage and actually see the round end of the transmitter start to lift out after the first side, then slide up the other side and it will pop right out. No credit card, no forcing, just lifts right out. Hope that helps! Also, I find it's best after restarting, to always do a couple of calibrations. For me, the restart numbers are always off, but come back in line once I do a couple of calibrations. Thanks for the video, Ariel. (46yrs T1D)

I’m coming to the end of my first Dexcom G6 sensor (after stopping using freestyle libre) in 24 hours (just got the notification!) and I’m going to give this a go using a used glucose test strip... wish me luck! Excellent video Ariel and thanks for the additional advice Lisa xx

This "hack" DOES NOT WORK. You spend too much time talking about how to remove the transmitter - WHICH ISNT NECESSARY (use the test strip method) and NOT ENOUGH time talking about all the OTHER details that can fck a person up and RUIN the accuracy of the CGM. Isnt that why we get a CGM - ACCURACY?????? My last 3 attempts all got worse and worse results. My most recent attempt ended after 3 days when the sensor kept stopping and refusing to give results. For a few hours at a time, I GOT NOTHING!! After a few hours, it would start again and would be 100-150 points off from my meter readings. How is that "good"?????? Guess what, it isnt!!!!! I need my CGM to be ACCURATE and RESPONSIVE. This hack sucks. Tell the truth about this POS worthless hack.

I tried using the old fashioned blood glucose strips, credit cards, library cards, grocery store cards but none of those worked so I purchased some inexpensive guitar picks from Amazon and they are perfect! So many thanks for the video.

Solid video !!! Tip on video, don't use your ring light flat-on to your face. Raise it to about the top of your head and aim it down a little. Also looks best if it is aimed off to the side a little for a pleasant lighting effect (rembrant lighting.). This will remove the very distracing ring of light in your eyes...

I'm thinking that's why they made the G7 that way. I've been hacking meters since before they were called "hacks". I used to hack Accu-chek meters so they worked with expired test strips. Medical device companies always find a way to keep it expensive; users find a way around it.

I just noticed that I loose signal more frequently after restarting but it isn't an issue if I'm saving thousands of dollars a year

In my two attempts to extend a sensor, the removal, with a guitar pick, has been easy. However, the readings have been WAY off. Today, (Day 12, second day of restart), I got a LOW alert of 46, right after lunch. A finger stick showed me at 211. I had similar discrepancies on my first try with a restart.

Ariel, great videos but today was 2nd attempt at getting a second go with one sensor. Getting transmitter out is not easy, tried various cards, paper clip etc, and finally removed it but snapped plastic sensor at wide end. I tried to use it anyway since end of sensor with filament insert was still intact. Despite all this I’m determined to try again in 10 days. Being able to extend sensor life would be great. Based on other postings here it’s doable. Your videos are excellent. 💥💥🥸👎🏻Dec 31, 2020, tried to remove another sensor to do a restart. Not happening, there is no space to wedge anything out for prying transmitter out. I’m a DIY guy and whatever your trick is it’s not easy to crack!

Check the comments above, it may be helpful... A lady posted that there are too clips on the sides and she uses a old BG test strip on each side to unclip the transmitter. Worth a try as test strips are MUCH thinner than say a card.. (But read her comment for better understanding as I’m not on Dexcom yet, but looking to! 😀)

Thanks Ariel, this is so useful and thanks for making the video so clear and informative. I will be new to G6 (have used G4 for 4 years). I will be on a plan that gives me 9 sensors and 1 transmitter every 3 months. The one question I have is concerning the transmitter. Dexcom said it will only last 3 months so by resetting the sensors I will be saving on the sensors but obviously not on the transmitter. Do I have that right? Many thanks

Thank you Ariel Warren. I live in France & had G6's sent from my daughter in UK since they would not send here. They will be authorised here on 3 December 2020. I have restarted the G6 my removing the transmitter & putting it in a Faraday Bag (that stops Bluetooth & wifi signals) for 30 min + & it has worked perfectly until now. Today I got a couple of false LO alerts & have had a few disconnection warnings. Is this a sign that I need to fit a new sensor, it expires tomorrow? Can I restart it again? Also my Dex is paired with a Samsung S3 Watch that vibrates for a LO. I use a free G-Watch app to do this. Also the G5/G6 Users Group on FB sent me a link to enable the G5 & G6 apps here. Thanks so for your vlogs & best wishes, Roger

I have only owned the G4 Platinum system because a I like the easy reset, 1 year transmitter life, and just like using the separate receiver. The question is what is the typical life you get from a G6 sensor with good performance? Also how often do you have to calibrate the sensor to keep it accurate? I typically get 10 to 14 days on my G4 sensors and typically calibrate it from 2 to 4 times a day? I think the G4 system is going to be no longer sold and I am very concerned on what is my next system to get G5 or G6?
@abovediabetes
@abovediabetes 3 года назад
Hi Mike, I believe that G4 and G5 have recently been discontinued. Therefore, you have to switch to G6 if you want to stay with Dexcom. I really enjoyed the G4 and the G5, but I definitely prefer the application process with the G6 compared to earlier versions. As for the performance, no calibrations is super nice, but it's not 100% accurate. No CGM really is, but as long as it gives us a decent trend and it doesnt alarm for a false low at 3AM. That is the worst! Also, there is always the 10-15 min lagtime, but that is with any CGM. My husband help me build a transmitter reset app on my iPhone so I get about 6 months out of my transmitters (instead of 3 months) and I always restart my sensors, which allows me to get about 15-28 days out of each one. I will be 100% honest here, I don't think the performance is as great as the G5, but I know that Dexcom continues to work on their products to improve them. The big push with Dexcom is to keep its users safe because it is integrated with closed-loop systems such as Tandem, and soon, Omnipod 5, which is looping, but an FDA-approved version. Hopefully, that is helpful for you. Best of luck to you!
@mhfnet
@mhfnet 3 года назад
Ariel, Thanks for the reply! Interesting that you get that long from your sensors, wow! The sensor I use works on both G4/G5 and I never get more than 21 days and 14 is typical! Not sure if that has to do where it is applied but I found my upper buttocks the best place because it's not only hidden but also protected by my underwear. Have you found you get better longevity on certain locations? In any case I am hoping to hold out for the G7 coming in 2021 as it sound pretty revolutionary (see diatribe.org/whats-coming-dexcom-2020-low-cost-slimmer-fully-disposable-cgm). Update: You are right my transmitter is going on 1 year I just tried to order a replacement and you can't get them so I'm getting a G6. I also have to mention I've been a T1D for 41 years and my A1C's have remained in the 5.5 to 6.5 range for as long as I can remember and have not had any signs of complications like nerve or eye damage using just Tresiba/Novolog pen injections and have never been on a pump. I do exercise 3 to 5 days a week, eat healthy (although rarely miss a dessert!), not overweight, and watch my glucose levels. Those are very important to getting my good A1C's but it might also be because I have not had any issues with insulin resistance and don't have a hectic lifestyle, although I do occasionally have inexplicable days of extreme highs and lows? It sounds like a pump would give me better flexibility and control especially with a closed loop system but it comes with additional cost and complexity of dealing with a pump? The biggest concern I have with the pump is similar to my CGM is that they are still to inconsistent and with a CGM I can always check it with a blood glucose check if I have concerns, but relying on a pump to deliver insulin has me concerned if something goes wrong! Do you recommend someone in my situation still consider getting a pump as the benefits outweigh the hassles? Do manufacturers offer a way to try out a pump? BTW I think you have one of the best sites for T1D's on RU-vid! Thanks, again Mike

@@abovediabetes This is a very helpful video to restart the G6. I was wondering how you can make a transmitter last more than the 3-4 months. In the past with my G5 transmitters I've had someone replace the battery on them, how do you do it yourself with G6?
@TheSchleeb
@TheSchleeb 3 года назад
IMHO this is major league overkill... if you get the proper overlay you DO NOT need to use "Skin Tac". Use the Lexcam brand overlays for the G6 and you can skip the additional adhesive. Its Amazon's Choice for a reason. BTW Lisa (below) is right on. Use a used glucose test strip. A credit card it too thick and bulky. Do it the easy way. You just poke it straight down on both sides and it pops right out. After you do a restart the sensor is a bit wonky for the first 12-18 hrs. gives some bogus readings that can be confirmed with a finger stick. Mine typically gives you random very sharp drops in glucose level which is bogus. It will drop like 20-30 points in a minute or two. It will eventually return to its senses and start reading correctly, so don't freak out. If you wish you can do a series of "calibrations" based on finger sticks, but it isn't necessary. It will return to proper operation. So, in the first 18 hrs. I don't use the readings for determining when or how much insulin to use. This has been pretty consistent behavior for me, when restarting sensors. But, as always, your mileage may vary... I've been using the G6 since it came out and I've never been able to get 20 days on a sensor.. NEVER. It is typically about 16 days max. When it starts dropping out... multiple gaps in readings or obvious incorrect readings... its time to ditch it an put a new one in. One last thought... I have also noticed that the less effort you use in removing the sensor the longer they will last. Good reason to not use a credit card. They are way to thick. Be as gentle as possible in removing the sensor. If you disturb that little wire that is in your skin, it gets upset.

Hi My wife has been diabetic for 40 years. Needless to say we have been thru a lot . We tried the re-start on her G6 last week but did not wait 15 minutes and it did not work. I didn't see the notice for the 15 minutes before we did this. My question is this. Her transmitter was expiring when we tried this so we figured it was a good time to do it. After about half an hour it notified us that we needed to change sensor now so we went and started over with the new transmitter and new sensor. Then after 24 hours the sensor failed and we had to use another sensor. Do you think that trying to re-start the sensor had anything to do with the new one failing or just a coincidence. Thanks

Hi Harold, an old transmitter shouldn't affect restarting a new sensor session, but I can't say that it definitely does not. Have you tried restarting the sensor with the new transmitter and waiting the 15 min? I'm curious to know if it has worked. Dexcom is always changing their equipment, but I try to post as soon as I find a new loophole. I wish your wife well. Wow, 40 years! Thank you Ariel Warren! Thank You! Thank you! Thank you! Exactly what I'm struggling with as a New Dexcom G6 user half way through my first 90 day kit and my sensor always starts failing with intermittent sugar readings or fails before 10 days are up
@abovediabetes
@abovediabetes 4 года назад
Hi Aaron! This is such a common problem. I hate to say it, but I feel it is more common than with the old G5 system. What I would do is keep note of how certain body parts work for your sensor. For example, if you usually use your stomach, try your arm, your backside, etc. Take notes on what seems to have better readings and not so great results. Hopefully, you find a good spot. Use that spot while rotating for better connection and signal. Also, you make sure to tent the area during insertion. Best of luck to you!

Aaron! Dexcom is doing just fine and therefore can afford to give you a sensor when you are having minor issues with one. My advice to you is to be trigger happy when it comes to replacing sensors. Whenever you see the slightest issue with a sensor, call support to have them send you a new one. If this is happening all the time, ask your Endo if he/she can write an RX for less than 10 days so your insurance won't fight you when you need a new order before the 90 days. I wish you well my friend!

but i'm still wundering why bother with restarting, because the transmitters life won't last any more time than what the 9 sensors are made to do. so you can end up having new sensors when the transmitter quits. what good does that do?

I am a male D2 considering moving from a lancing testing device to Dexcom G6. I have a serious question: the sensor still appears a bit bulky to me; my concern is during intercourse if I am lying down and my partner is on top (cowgirl) will the device dislodge from my skin? If the device dislodges during activity will it bruise me? If the device dislodges can it be reapplied? Please, serious responses are appreciated.

I am currently wearing my G6 on my right bicep. So not a sex problem. I have also worn it on my belly and on my front to outside thigh areas. I am paired up the tandem X2 pump. I won’t go into details but my husband and I have not dislocated the sensor ever! Once you and your partner get use to the G6 being a part of your body I think you will become relaxed and not be so concerned! I am NOT saying that you should not be careful or concerned! Just relax! P.S. the only time I have seriously banged the G6 is when I have worn it on the bicep and got way to close to a door frame! It was a bit painful and there was a bit of blood but everything was okay otherwise! You probably have been wearing your G6 for a while and no longer need this post! Live long and prosper, y’all!

Putting a credit card in the back is a BAD idea. If you break that back edge your transmitter is no longer held in properly, you put the card/test strip on the sides to release the clips. With this method you'll get "No Restarts" message ½ the time too. With the sensor out start a new code (use an old one 9311, 9117, etc) & wait 20 minutes for it to fail. If you use the same code, even with a new sensor that happens to have the same code, you have a maybe 50:50 chance of it saying "no restarts" even if it's a completely new sensor

@Ann Hanover well i'm not any engineer but was able to figured out that maybe you are able to get your TXs without having to buy 9 sensors with each one, the way that my med supply company insists on doing. please tell who your supplier is and will they sell you your TXs without 9 sensors included with each one?

@Ann Hanover THANKYOU for the explanation i needed - and for explaining that you have such a problem with understanding the numerical ratio situation with my my med supply company. BTW i used to do factory production work that sometimes had to involve the company's engineers. it was REALly interesting to see what problems they had with understanding some of the simplest things as well. it's not anything personal. just a fact. honestly i are very thankfull for your responses.
