Just to add something i had trouble with. After installing windows, to get back to SteamOS, you need to get to bios and select bootmanager and select SteamOS. If steamOS doesnt appear in the list than, in the BIOS, select boot from file and select esp/efi/steamos/steamcl.efi. and steamOS will start. Thx for the tutorial.
I only have windows installed( not the double booth program). How do I get back to SteamOS? And if I do does it mean I have to windows all the way again if I want to go back?
If anybody has the issue of "windows could not prepare the computer to boot". When you partition the STEAM DECK SSD, make sure to make the partitioned amount NTFS otherwise it will not work. It cannot be unallocated or any other format. I spent 2 hours finding this out so hopefully it helps somebody
@@AlexStLouis-gq8kp I am running in to this error. Am i supposed to luanch back into the Steam Recovery KDE Partition Manager and delete the partition, then reformat it as ntfs? or can I just change the format without deleting?
Just incase someone needed help figuring out how to do this (like me) all you need to do is right click the partition and change the file system to ntfs
Of course I liked and subscribed. I don't know if it's the music, the tutorial itself or a combination of both...but this video made a brotha cry. You're the man bro. Much respect to you.
Oh man this video deserves 1MM views, holy crap, what a great tutorial. Very well structured, with pointers to other videos where more details are needed for some of these pieces. Super helpful!
Thank you for making this video it helped me a lot. I got everything to work. To make Bluetooth work I had to create a folder called "REALTEK" in the Program Files folder under Local Disk (C:) -> Drag the whole Bluetooth driver installer folder into desktop -> open it -> right click the installer then "Run as Administrator" (Works right after without restarting). For the Handheld Companion app get the latest version online instead of the link provided in the description. Using the old version of the app then updating manually within the app breaks the app (The app won't open after the update for some reason).
This was very easy to follow. Only gripe was you didn't show how to reboot back to steamOS without Clover (You can do so by pressing vol. down and power as usual and then selecting the steamOS drive).
Nevermind, I got it working. Damn as easy at it looks it took me almost 4 hours to finish this since I fiddled with mine after work. Working great now! Thanks a lot man.
One thing to note is, if you make a MicroSD bootable in Linux, you may have trouble in Windows, where the drive may not even appear with drive letter or in partitioning tools. You can fix this by using Ext2Fsd to recognize the drive, give it a letter, and format it for Windows.
I actually stumbled on your video when I was looking for ways to dual boot windows I tried using various methods but to no avail or make the process seem to much of a chore. Despite the video being super long but it was worth it every step of the way is easy to do and guess what everything works as shown for that you get a sub.
Best video I've seen. I had watched a few prior to getting an upgraded HD, glad I found this when looking for the most recent videos on the subject. You went very in depth, thank you.
Thanks for the video! And thanks for the clover recommendation, I was testing refind before I installed windows, and it wasn't working. With clover, I got the dual boot interface, even with just steamos 😊
YET ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO, it wasnt long at all cause you showed everything we needed for a smooth process! Thank you so much for the instructions, worked like a charm.
Great tutorials. While I’m sure I just need to play around with them, the hot keys section was confusing due to the speed you were going. I still need to do the FPS etc part but I did everything else and I’m so happy. Thank you!
Great video, guys. Glad Mute was mentioned in the video. Helped me out a lot in discord. I totally get the questions about how it worked before but not now kind of things. It really kept me from tinkering up till now. I didn't feel like I was a bother at all when yall helped me out. Thanks a lot.
Nice video man! VEry well explained. One thing to mention is that it can take up 30 minutes to partition the drive. While so the progress bar will stay at 0% (atleast it did for me). And went all the way up to 100% at once when it was finished. I can imagine people not being patient and thinking what the hell is going wrong. But just be patient it is running in the background.
I had followed a different guide to dualboot windows on steam deck and after 3 days I finally managed to do the whole process only to be hugely dissappinted by the performance I was getting on the games I could not play on steam OS, not even mentioning the fact I could not get the controllers to work outside of games downloaded on steam, but now that I watched your video I'll be going back to windows for a final try on playing fortnite and COD on my steam deck, hopefully with HC and removing bloatware, performance and controller issues will be reduced enogh for those games to be playable.
Overkill knocks it out of the park with this tut, absolutely brilliant. Thanks for putting the effort into this. I, as well as alot of others genuinely appreciate your effort bro. Very well done! now, my only question is, whats that live desktop your rocking? haha! cheers.
Glad it helped! There is the app that I use from Steam called Wallpaper Engine. And it is one of the wallpapers they have available. Thank you for the kind words. It provides us motivation to continue
fix for the garbled screen when Windows boots up - Open command prompt with admin privileges and enter the command - bcdedit.exe -set {globalsettings} highestmode on And thanks for the shoutout!
how do you establish admin privileges? I am assuming in Windows? It's my SteamDeck. New to anything related to coding. Is there a space before you start typing the line? Thanks
This took atleast 4 hours to do I had to redo the recovery drive step twice because for some reason it wasn’t saving the changes to the disk partition then it took forever to setup handheld companion but in the end I got it to work, also if you need a cd key, I got a working one at gamers outlet for like 5 bucks *make sure it matches the version you set up*
Bro u saved my life I wasted so many hrs with another guy on RU-vid bro method is solid is even faster than this one but he never updated on the garbled screen nd u even included all that extra stuff drivers nd apps other RU-vidr is just straight installing windows and that’s it that shit all laggy af nd for a guy a like me nd more beginner out there u the guy thanks bro keep doin yo thang fr

Great tutorial! I had issues with Rufus and Windows 11. I got the 'Windows Could Not Prepare the Computer to Boot' error. I fixed this by using the creation tool to prepare the USB directly.
I am mainly a mobile gamer, but mobile games have become stale. I wanted to stay mobile, but head toward pc gaming and decided on the steam deck. Went with the 64 gig, installed a 1TB and followed your video for windows dual boot. Thank you for the help and now for some big boy COD!
@hqqq9792 funny story.... I returned the steam deck after hours of hastling with it. It worked great but hooking it up to a TV or capture card was a nightmare from hell. #ROGAlly gang now

I just followed this guide because I corrupted my game 256gb by swapping it in and out of the deck. I now have it dual booting on the internal SSD. *one problem though. After installing clover I have no sound in windows Cheers mate. Outstanding tutorial.
@@OVERKILLGAMING786 it was odd. I reinstalled the audio drivers right away. And the sound still wasn’t working. On speakers listed was something like APU device. I restarted and now my audio work fine 🤷♂️🤷♂️
Thank you for the guide! Honestly, its the first one that made it simple and easy to follow. I did run into one issue though, but was able to find a solution after looking through some reddit posts. My issue was that after windows was installed along with all programs and drivers, I would not be able to boot back into Steam OS. The option just disappeared and I was only able to get back into windows. In order to fix this, I had to shut down and turn on by pressing sound + and power button. Then went into different boot options and had to go through the folders to find Steam OS.
I actually got it to work, but I'll drop by the discord in case others have a similar situation! I actually just followed your guide again to dual boot my SD OLED. I don't know if its just me but after installing windows I had to go through the bios files to get it to boot back into Steam OS. Once again, great guide! @@OVERKILLGAMING786
BIG NOTICE AND A MISTAKE I MADE: You MUST install Windows 11 PRO not HOME otherwise, during setup, it will REQUIRE you to connect to the internet to use a microsoft account. Because we install the network drivers later on, this will show no networks found. Good video.
When it prompts you to connect to the internet, there is an option that shows in the bottom left that says "I don't have internet". Just click on that and it will skip the account setup process. I use Windows 11 Pro and this is what I do.
@@OVERKILLGAMING786correct, if you are using pro you will have the skip internet option, but if you use home edition (like I did by accident) you will not have the option to skip internet. i was just putting it out there to make sure nobody uses home by accident. Good video any way and it works on mine!
Really great video, thank you! Though I kept getting the error "sudo password is wrong" when trying to run the install script, it kept saying my sudo password was wrong. I had to use "passwd deck" and "sudo passwd deck" to set the passwords to get it to work - in case anyone else has a similar issue.
For some reason I States my windows is not activated. This is an amazing guide , Im not sure why it wont let me activate windows I already did the debloater and disabled updates.
I have heard many people state that they have had this issue. Technically, it should not require an activation code because the device has a 7" screen and Windows is supposed to be free. You can purchase a key for pretty cheap on CDKeys.com for like $12
@@OVERKILLGAMING786 nice ! Thank you my brother , I have finished your guide successfully except that windows minor issue, great detail again thank you.
I was having an issue where it said windows would not create a partition, when I could get it to work it would give me the windows cannot reboot this device error. To fix this I had to select MBP instead of GPT partition in rufus
lol after lots of critisism on reddit and facefook about using the Micro SD to clone too,,, I re- considered and will be cloning to the internal ssd... i will take your advice and just use the new micro sd card for extra storage.... i dont know why I was thinking my idea of cloning windows 11 to the micro sd was a better idea lol anyways Thanks for all the great videos and quick responses to my comments, have a great night man n wish me luck
Great Video, thanks!! What I'm thinking about is whether to install Windows 11 or WinDeck OS. Essentially it's all about installing GOG and have it run Cyberpunk 2077. I've used the GOG Launcher on SteamOS but got terrible screen freezes even with CryoTools. Only directly from Steam it ran smoothly but I don't want to buy three licenses (I already have GOG and Xbox licenses).
@@OVERKILLGAMING786 Yeah, it has been released ... I guess ... July 2023? It is an already debloated Windows Image that runs already all necessary drivers. Only the OLED model won't benefit yet, because Valve hasn't provided all necessary drivers yet. I hope I don't have to wait for too long ...
Fantastic video, thank you. Sounds like a must-have step-by-step guide if someone wants to use W11 on SD. 🎉 The high sci-fi themed background music is also nice - but made me falling asleep multiple times. 😂 What is the name of that song/track, I have insomnia, it could be also useful later.
I know this is on me but I'm posting this just in case anyone sees this. I didn't realize you were only giving windows 64gb because you were running your games off a seperate drive. To anyone reading this if you need to run them off your main drive then please give windows more room.
At this current time it isn't possible. When you attempt to install it, it will look for specific folders that are associated with SteamOS. I tried to install it on ChimeraOS and was unsuccessful.
Yes, with Windows you won't have to worry about Proton. If you are planning to dual boot the OLED Steam Deck, be advised that not all of the drivers are available yet. Still waiting on LAN/Wifi, Bluetooth and sound drivers for the OLED
I watched your previous guide. Very detailed and answered all of the questions that popped into my head. Btw would you consider doing a gameplay test for Gundam Battle Operation 2 on the steam deck with windows? It's a recent port from Playstation to PC. The game is free to play on steam. I searched everywhere but I can't find anyone showing anything like this.
When downloading and installing the link you provided it works. Once i update HC it completes but it wont launhc. Fix was to uninstall and install the newest version from the get go.@OVERKILLGAMING786
So i did this tutorial and it worked perfectly but I'm wondering if there's a way to expand the storage because i did around 60 gigs of storage and some games require more than that so i was wondering how to add more storage
Hmmm.. So, this is why it is extremely important to consider the amount of space you will need before partitioning. Because once it is done and you have installed Windows, it is not so simple to change the partition sizes. One option would be to use an SD for additional storage, which is what I did in the past. I basically only gave Windows 64Gb of storage and SteamOS the rest and I used a 512GB SD card to store my games on Windows. The other option would be to redo everything, which I have also done many times after realizing I needed more or less space.
I had this exact issue with my 1TB Corsair mini, i am in the process of redoing everything and i will partition around 600gb this time to allow ample space for COD etc
Windows is the default OS. If you install Clover you can change that. You can set up SteamOS as the default OS. Here's how... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-B4-p0ptsRnI.htmlsi=4HNwaixaqfBkkIEI
SUPER helpful, literally the best video on the topic. Thank you so much, this is definitely the video I'll be recommending to my Steam Deck-owning friends! By the way, have you heard of Ultimate Windows Tweaker? It's a helpful utility I now use on all Windows computers to reach hard-to find settings. Not directly related to the Steam Deck, but something I found beneficial nonetheless.
Hello. On my Boot Manager, I have 2 SteamOS. How do I delete one of them? They both use the same directory so I'm afraid to use the Konsole comm. to delete it.
Not sure if someone is facing the same issue, but I did these steps, but at some point my dock was not being recognized anymore, not for hdmi ou, not for usb ports, and not even for charging. I've read people with the same problem, but no clear solution. Any ideas? Great tutorial by the way, thanks!
@@OVERKILLGAMING786 thanks for the reply man. It's a third party dock, but a good one (at least from what I read). It was working and after reimaging the deck and partitioning, at some point it just stopped. I read about people having that problem with any dock, including official one, and valve recommends puting the deck on shipping mode ("battery off" mode) and then back into plug, should work. I did that. And nothing on the dock. Tested another though (genki covert dock) and it worked for both charging and HDMI out. So I guess the dock really died, not sure why. I even could ask for a refund, so all good I guess. Thanks again!!
Hi, I really appreciated the video!! I just wanted to mention that my handheld companion is not opening. I figure this is a common issue, but I was hoping that maybe you could help?
If I am understanding the question correctly, you have Windows on the device and you want to set up a dual boot by adding SteamOS along side Windows. I don't think so. The reason is the SteamOS install software doesn't provide an option to restore SteamOS to a partition. But rather restores it across the entire SSD. This is why we have to install Windows along side SteamOS because we do have the option to create the partition along side SteamOS for the Windows install. There is also no option to install SteamOS on to another SSD, such as an external SSD while using the recovery software.
i follow your steps until resize partition stucked. successfully resize my SSD partition, but when goes to windows installation, the partition dissapeared.
Yes. You will continue to get all of these updates and these can sometimes create complications. Minor complications. I recommend mandually updating rather than auto updates.
