Back in 2016 I produced a video called "how to get a flawless green screen shoot in a tiny room."
Here it is if you want to check it out: • How to get a flawless ...
And 6 years ago, using stones knives and bearskins (free plug-ins) it was about as good as you could get.
But recently I wondered about that.
What if I took that same footage shot so long ago with a camera I’ve upgraded twice since then and ran it through a couple of the tools I use today? Could it look noticeably better?
And I was shocked. I mean really shocked.
It seems that getting the lighting right the first time has even more of an effect than I had previously imagined.
This means your job could be so much easier if you want to make videos with a green screen.
To make the most out of this revolution in green screen, you may want to get your free copy of The Ultimate Small Room Green Screen Guide, freshly updated and revised for 2024.

Thank you for the update. I've used all your "small room" advice and have recently switched from using Windows Pinnacle Studio Ultimate to Mac Final Cut Pro for my editing. Your "plug in" advice is apparently what I still need, so thanks for those tips. I'm most grateful for the recommendation of leaving my green screen room "ready to go" for a video session. I only need to turn off the room lights and, with three switches, turn on the soft boxes and fill lights - and ready to go. All the best in the New Year.

For those using Davinci Resolve, the built-in 3D Keyer does a great job. I use 4 LED panels to light up my background, underexpose it just a bit, and almost no issues at all with spillage.

Yes, the underexposing is a nice pro tip! I go for around 1 stop.

I haven't tried to do green screen yet but will be doing it soon. One of the dead giveaways I'm noticing as I go through green screen tutorials is that novices always insert background images that don't match their video shot. The background images they pick are captured from a different camera angle and/or distance than the studio setup. Even in this tutorial, 1) the background image looks a little too blurry, 2) too wide-angle, and 3) too low. For the object positions in this shot to be true, he would have to be close to the camera and kneeling on the floor. Are there any stock photo collections organized based on orientation of the video subject's camera lens? (angle, height, distance from the face, etc.?)

Thank you very much.. I have a question: If you use a 50% background, how do you then let your "real background" through? Like the background you have on your video? Do you then key out the gray background? Sorry for the question. New at this.. Thanks for all you do..
@StevenWasher
@StevenWasher 2 года назад
The 50% refers to the percentage of the color gray in the background you want to use when you cut out the key. It does not refer to the transparency of the screen itself. Hope that helps!

Hi Steven! I have a question regarding the lighting of the green screen (DIY). I will buy Led T8, 4 ft. But it is impossible to find with 5000k here in Sweden. There are 4000K or 6500k. Is 4000k enough? Thought two packs with 2 T8 in each. Thanks for very good videos, has helped me a lot.
@fredriklyrblad7597
@fredriklyrblad7597 Год назад
PS. what lumen brightness should the tubes have?
@StevenWasher
@StevenWasher Год назад
I would probably try the 6500 first. It should net you better color correction down the road if you need it.
@StevenWasher
@StevenWasher Год назад
@@fredriklyrblad7597 It's not so much how many lumens, but in what proportion to the key and fill. Try to get lights that allow you to adjust the overall brightness so that the screen lights are about half a stop or more under the lights on yourself.
@fredriklyrblad7597
@fredriklyrblad7597 Год назад
@@StevenWasher Many thanks Steven :) Then I test 6500k dimmable, so I can adjust the brightness. Think that the most important thing is to get a smooth surface, so that the key has good contours and no spillage.

The room I have available is about 8x8, AND that's empty, I have 2 desks, a floor to roof shelf and over the other side a guitar rack. Seriously don't know what I'm supposed to do... I can pretty much rotate my chair in the middle 😐😐

This one looks nicer, that is for sure. Softer lightning on the subject, matching shirt. The light is yellowish, and considering your background, it should be still bright outside, so no inside lightning should be needed according to the scene - I think the subject lightning should be cooler. The static city background is still unnatural, although more believable than the five-year old one.
@craigieb
@craigieb 2 года назад
All due respect, I think your older key (and color correction) looked much better (albeit a little on the red side). This new video looks off-color and washed out to me.
@StevenWasher
@StevenWasher 2 года назад
And I like the less-vivid look and really like that there's no green wash or outline on the old footage. But to each his own.
