Oh, I do love that scene (6:44 / 7:06). Seeing either Jerry or Tom imitating the MGM lion's roar was one o' the best things in the world to me when I was a kid.
I love that their logo shows off what the do. They had a living moving logo as they are a motion picture company and then when they started doing sound movies they added a roar. You can tell how excited they must have been to add the roar.
03:39 The golden years of MGM with Marx Brothers roar. If company allows trolling with its main logo, you know it's making quality stuff. Disney would have no such thing today.
Unfortunately it’s the opposite for every other major business or corporation in the world. It’s so obnoxious, “Guys, we know our consumers are dumb, we Gotta simply literally everything, even the logo! Or they won’t buy our stuff because it’ll be too complex!”
I'll always remember that one because it was the opening to 2001. I'm guessing that was a directorial choice to not use the lion clip or it was just denoting that this was the Anglican division of the company
It was only used for 3 films across 1966-68, so it wasn’t being used as THE logo. Not sure what the thinking was. That logo ended up being used for MGM Resorts International.
This has to be the most bipolar lion I've ever seen. Sometimes he roars, sometimes he's chill, sometimes he sounds like a cat, sometimes he sounds and looks human, and just when you think you finally have a powerful lion, he goes back to sounding like water going down a drain. This really busted my perception of the powerful MGM lion. 2008 is the best one.
The lion I remember the most is Tanner, from years of watching old MGM cartoons (like Tom & Jerry, Droopy, Barney Bear, and those other Tex Avery classics) on Cartoon Network in my childhood.
@@ARASFilmServicebecause the first 20 or so minutes (as well as the last scene) are in sepia tone, it isn’t until when Dorothy lands in Oz that it goes to colour
MGM producer- "Hey guys! Instead of lions on the logo, how about we do a alligator? Let's have a change." MGM worker- "Okay. Let's try it." *Shows cringey alligator roaring* MGM producer- "Hell no let's go back to lions."
baby Lion: When i grew up, i wanna stick my head to a circle at the beginning of movies and roar whole class: *laugh 20 years later: *WHAT'S UP NOW, BITCHES!*
I'm glad they kept the live action Lion for the Hanna-barbara Tom and Jerry shorts. There's just something about a live action Lion welcoming you to watch a cartoon of a cat getting its ass handed to by an mouse with its iconic theme music.
Tanner is the original lion appearing in the original Tom and Jerry cartoon in the beginning (especially in the one where Tom immediately replaced the lion; I'm mentioning this because I used to think it was Leo because of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer being written above the movie tape roll logo when it was actually Tanner since Leo appeared in the one with MGM's name above). 🦁
6:21 - the Ben-Hur logo. No lion roar, but the music compensates. It's also funny that other lions are like, "okay, fine, I'll roar", the 1934 lion (3:24) was like, "keep messing with me and I'm gonna eat ya!"
The 1934 Leo seemed to be the hardest one. Runner-up to 1942. From 1942-1956 the various Leos give a part-hard/part-cheesing the camera! And the 1956 Leo --- WOW! Full Metal Afro mane so large, it almost looks like a lion's toupee! LOL! Couldn't get anyone near it to get a haircut!!! And then, 1957 --- it got shaved fo-EVER!!! :-( Big props to the Marx Bros. entry!
It’s so interesting that the intro in 1930 seems to be the only time they ever used an actual Lion’s roar as the sound! The rest of them sound like tiger roars to my ear.
9:27 Being part Aussie, it is my obligation to say that was my favourite! (Ironically Crocs and Lions are my favourite living animals among a few others)
We've got lions like George, Tanner and Coffee screaming their heads off, then there's just Slats looking around like "oh is that food? is that food? gimme food" Also, George is one handsome lion. Very thick, healthy mane
MGM Lions in a nutshell 1916 lion: .__. 1920's lion: "I'm not trying to roar." late 1920's lion: "There is my voice!" 1950's lion: "I am in color." "Wait that's Cinemascope!" 2012-2021 lion: "Why are we zooming out in the first place?" Present lion: "I'm oversimplified."
The second longest used lion is Jackie, the most angriest is tanner the lion, the most maned is George the lion, the youngest and longest lion is Leo the lion
How could I not?! Tom & Jerry is awesome (hell, I’m also looking forward to the movie that will upcome at the end of this year by [no big shock] Warner Animation Group)!
7:21 logo was used in 1968 only of course in Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. The NY times' film critic Renata Alder begins her review of the film "Even the M-G-M lion is stylized and abstracted ...." I believe it was also used in the film THE SUBJECT WAS ROSES, also released in 1968.
