This is great, thank you! I had no idea that OneNote had added this double-bracket feature. The one thing that seems to be missing from this is "backlinking" in the other direction. Do you know if OneNote can show you where a linked note is linked throughout the Notebook? Where I feel like OneNote is still lacking is being able to tie all my related notes together, and I haven't found a way to do bi-directional linking in OneNote.
Hi kylekatsumi, I am glad I was able to tell you about this! It seems like the features just get added and I don't know about them until somebody tells me or I stumble on it while using OneNote. I don't know of any way to show all of the places where a note is linked, but I agree this would be a helpful feature. I too would like bi-directional linking in OneNote, but as far as I know it doesn't exist yet. ~Michele
It would have been great if it were creating the backlink at the destination, so we could go back and forth. Also, I was wondering if there is a way to reference one page to another notebook? For example I've got a Projects notebook, I would like to have my project notes to be related to a Sales Notebook because that project is related to Sales. Thank you.
I agree, being able to create a link both ways at the same time would be great but so far I don't know of an easy way to create that. You can create a link to any other page in your OneNote account including pages in another notebook. You can link to a page, section or an entire notebook by right-clicking and copying the link to the page, section or notebook. I hope that answers your question - feel free to respond if you need more information. ~Michele
Hi Toppanam, I can show this for sure but unfortunately there isn't a shortcut to do it. I would have to repeat the same process twice, but I think it is worth it to show because it comes up a lot. Thanks for the comment! ~Michele
Can you create multiple pages from the list in Onenote for Win 10? In Onenote 2016 I saw that function called "Link to pages". Can't see it in Win 10 App
Hi Audrey, I just checked this in my copy of OneNote for Windows 10 and I did not have the Link to Pages. Just in case you didn't know, as a Windows user you can download and use OneNote (formerly called "OneNote 2016") alongside OneNote for Windows 10. You can switch back and forth as needed for specific features. I hope this helps! ~Michele
When using the webedition of Onenote, it is not possible to make square brackets as links. It is equally not possible to use the CTRL+i shortcut to point to a specific page. The ONLY way to link onenotepages on the webapp is with the "insert link" in which you will have to already have the link at hand.
Great vid , great tips. I am trying to make a light version of Obsideon or Hypernotes all in one note. Is there a way to insert text/material into existing pages ? So I could create a thought pattern on my subjects? thank you so much for your time and effort. All Love and Light from Europe 💞
Hi Gee MeeL, you can absolutely insert text and material onto existing pages, almost without limit. I'm not sure I am getting the full meaning of your question though because that seems like too short of an answer for what you are asking. If I didn't answer you, please reply and let me know with more information so I can try to help. ~Michele
@@MicheleChristensen hmm reading my reply I can understand you don't get , I didn't even get when reading it back 😉 I mean can you insert text from another app into a already existing one note page? Thanks you're the best. Love from Europe✨
@@Geemeel1 Yes, you can insert text from another app into an existing OneNote page. If you can use copy and paste if that's available. You can also select "print" on a webpage and when you are asked to select a printer, you should be able to send it to OneNote (if you are on a Windows machine). If you can save or get a pdf, you can use the insert command to add that pdf to your page. Windows also has a snipping feature that you can use as well. I hope this helps! ~Michele
Do you know if there is any way to move a local notebook to the cloud without it breaking all the internal links?.. I just moved one and the links work on the web version of OneNote, but I think that is because the local files still exist and it's using them. If I delete the local files they will break. I can't believe more people don't complain about this. I guess people mainly use the cloud.
@@MicheleChristensen OK thanks. One Note is so weird. I hid the local folders as a test, after moving a notebook to the cloud and some of the links still work. Other times they break. Makes no sense.
How can I automatically create pages in a OneNote notebook based on a name list in an Excel spreadsheet? I can do it in the old version of onenote but can see to figure it out in the Windows 10 version.
Hi Erik, I don't know how to do this sorry! I didn't even know you could do it in the older version, so thanks for the heads up! In case it is helpful, you can install and use both OneNote 2016 (sections in tabs on top) and OneNote for Windows 10 (sections in list on left side) on a Windows machine and use them both. So you could add your pages in the older version and switch versions as needed. OneNote announced that they are merging the versions so hopefully that means all of the features from both versions will be merged. I am working on getting a speaker to explain the change on my channel so I hope to be able to provide more insight on this. ~Michele
@@MicheleChristensen Here is a link to a video that show us how to do it in 2016. This is actually exactly what I want to do. Can you see if this is possible in windows 10 version? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QD5qiC3TKgE.html
@@deahle Thanks for pointing me to this - I had not seen this trick before! I tested it in OneNote for Windows 10 and like you, found no way to do it. However, it still works in the version of OneNote called simply "OneNote" (formerly OneNote 2016). This is the version that we will have for the future, so at least we have that. I wish I had a better answer. ~Michele
Hi j wb, I am not sure I understand your question but maybe this will help. If you link to a paragraph on page Beta from page Alpha and later change the text in the paragraph on page Beta, as far as I know the link from page Alpha will take you to the same paragraph it always did even though the paragraph is now updated. Feel free to reply with more information if I missed what you were asking. ~Michele
@@MicheleChristensen Thanks for the reply. I have this link "Actionitem: Review ABC Framework doc sent yesterday." in section "ActionItems" that points to this paragraph: "Actionitem: Review ABC Framework doc sent yesterday." in section "Details". If I update the latter to "Actionitem: *** [Done] *** Review ABC Framework doc sent yesterday.", I want that to appear in the former. Hope this makes sense.
Lets say I create a link to a page called 'Protagonist'. Later, I decide on a name and need to change 'Protagonist' to 'George Washington'. How can I change the page title and have all the links that reference it update to the new name?
Hi Zupa, I don't know of a reliable way to do this. It might be, emphasis on might, to do a find and replace but I've never used myself. Everything I have seen on it seems to suggest that OneNote's find and replace is not seamless (seamless = my language) like it is in other apps, so I question whether it would work like you want. If I were going to try this, I would create a small test notebook just for this so that if it goes awry you don't ruin anything important. Wish I had a better answer - this would be a great feature! ~Michele
@@MicheleChristensen Thanks for your time! I'd looked for the find and replace tool but couldn't see it - I'll dig a bit more and see. I've never used onenote before but when I wanted to outline a story it seemed like a great free tool but if it's lacking a few bits of functionality then it becomes more of a burden than a boon. Thanks again!
Thank you for this GlazeLee12cU! I don't use keyboard shortcuts much at all, so I appreciate you adding this here. I love when people share knowledge online so everyone can benefit. ~Michele
Hi K Potter, What device are you using? This works for me in both version of OneNote for Windows, iPad and Android but I don't use Mac desktop or laptop. I would double check that your OneNote version is up to date on whatever device you are using. I hope this helps - I don't have any other ideas. ~Michele
Hi Shivani, I don't know a a shortcut way to do this but if I needed to do this I would probably do it as follows: If I needed links to Page ABC in many different locations, I would copy the link to Page ABC and then hit paste over and over again in all the places where I wanted the link. If I needed links to a bunch of different pages all on a single page, I would probably use the double brackets and just type [[page name]] over and over with each page name. I hope this helps, if I find a shortcut I'll do a video on it. ~Michele
My homework deadline is approaching and I've been trying for an hour to get my work in PDF form. It's all cloud links with no files on my actual computer. No file menu. When I print to pdf, it's a link. So infuriating. They're doing this on purpose and I don't know why. Just hateful.
That situation sounds terrible, I hope you got something figured out. If I understand your question correctly, you did the work in OneNote and now cannot print it to pdf. I rarely print from OneNote, so I don't know if I'll be able to be helpful. This video was filmed on a Windows machine, so if you are using something other than Windows your menus might look different. Also, this video was filmed on the now-older version of OneNote called "OneNote for Windows 10." The current version of OneNote for Windows is called just "OneNote." If you are on a Windows machine, you can check what version you are using by seeing how the name comes up in the Windows menu. ~Michele
