These are some great shortcuts for links, great info. Do you know of a way to find and replace ALL links quickly, especially external links? A couple examples: 1. What if your folder location moves, then all your links to that folder are broken. 2. If you copy a page or section to a new notebook, then links still go to original notebook or break, if notebook isn't available.
@MicheleChristensen
@MicheleChristensen 2 года назад
Hi Heather, I'm sorry, I don't know of a way to replace all links. Are you storing notebooks locally on your own computer or linking to files on your own hard drive? The reason I ask is that I move pages and sections all the time and never had a link break but I only use OneDrive. I don't know if you are able to use cloud storage but if you can your link problems might be reduced. ~Michele

Thanks for the comprehensive tutorial! I'm using the OneNote for W10 app but whenever I paste the link I get a web link, not like the "nice looking" link that you've shown in your video. Now I realized why that was happening and I thought I would share it. The reason this is happening is that my default paste options are set to "Keep Text Only". So whenever I paste the link I have to right-click and paste as "Keep Source Formatting" and this inserts a "nice looking" link.

I like the double brackets except only works for pages? So I'll go with the right-click to link everything. Ever looked at Gem for OneNote? They have a lot of other functions that can be added to OneNote. Fun, fun, fun!
@MicheleChristensen
@MicheleChristensen 4 года назад
Interesting question Kenneth! I did some testing on my own account and found that the double brackets linked to an existing section in the same notebook but I could not use double brackets to link to a section in a different notebook or to link to a different notebook. Thanks for the question - I learned something new! I know about Gem for OneNote but have not downloaded it yet. I feel like I still haven't learned everything there is to learn about OneNote as it is. Also, I switched to OneNote for Windows 10 as soon as Microsoft announced that the Win 10 version would be their main focus going forward and as of the last time I checked, OneNote for Windows 10 does not support add-ins like Gem unfortunately :( . ~Michele

@@MicheleChristensen Hi Michele, you beat me to it. I was just about to add that the brackets do indeed link to Sections, (apparently taking you to whatever Page is currently open in that Section). Notebooks, don't think so. We obviously love OneNote...I think its one of the greatest programs ever made. Just for fun you should try Gem with 2016, you can 'favorite' pages, sections, etc. which it lists on the Ribbon, you can 'bookmark', here's another one---know how you only get (in View) 16 faint shades to color pages normally...in Gem you get a full color spectrum to do it. That's some serious color potential! Plus much more. Some of its add-ins I couldn't get thrilled about, but many I really like.

@ToddBoyum
@ToddBoyum 3 года назад
If you tag content on a page, you can use the search tag feature to create a summary that will copy those tags to a new summary page. -- that might accomplish what you are suggesting.
@MicheleChristensen
@MicheleChristensen 3 года назад
Great idea Todd! As of right now (as far as I can tell), I think the tag summary is only available on OneNote 2016 (the older Windows version with sections in tabs along the top). ~Michele
@MicheleChristensen
@MicheleChristensen 3 года назад
Hi Jacob, I don't know of a way to do this unfortunately. What Todd suggested below is to run a tag summary. If you are on a Windows machine, you'll need to use the older version called OneNote 2016 (sections are in tabs along the top). You can download it for free from the Microsoft store and use it alongside OneNote for Windows 10 on the same machine. Here is a video that includes how to run the tag summary. I hope this helps! If you find a good answer and remember, please let me know. I love to have answers for people when they ask questions. ~Michele

AMAZING! Have you heard of the "zettelkasten" method Michele? I've recently encountered it from someone using an app called Roam Research (YT channel: Shu Omi) and was wondering if the system could be implemented in an MS product. This seems to fit the bill well, although a bit clunkier than advertised on Roam.
@MicheleChristensen
@MicheleChristensen 4 года назад
Thanks for the comment aliquot! I had heard of zettelkasten a while ago but just spent some refreshing myself. It's really interesting and I love that it can grow very large and still be linked and organized even when done in analog format. I think you could do this in OneNote, but I have not tried. I do host people on my monthly live chat (the Take Note Chat) on my channel, and I have added this to my list of topics. I can see one problem with doing this in OneNote - the system seems to rely on having just one "box" or place for notes. For me this would translate to a singe OneNote notebook with each note being a page (you can even size the pages to index cards in OneNote 2016). The issue is that when a notebook gets very large the sync function can be slow. So the next thought I have is "well, split the notes into different notebooks." You can still link notes in different notebooks but then you run into a problem of decision making, e.g. when do you start your next notebook and what goes in notebook 1 vs. 2, etc. Interesting idea though, and the channel you linked to looks interesting too. I'll keep my eyes open - thanks for the idea! ~Michele

Michele. I am using OneNote in O365 along with Microsoft Teams app and i cannot get the brackets to work on any page or section. The right click and copy link does work. Is there a setting i am missing?
@MicheleChristensen
@MicheleChristensen 4 года назад
Hi Rich, My best guess is that you are using OneNote 2016 and have a notebook stored on your local drive as opposed to OneDrive (Microsoft's cloud). You can use either OneNote 2016 or OneNote for Windows 10 alongside O365 so I can't tell based on O365 which version of OneNote you are using. When I opened OneNote 2016 and opened an old notebook that I have stored locally on my C drive, I found the same error you did - I right-clicked on copy link to page and nothing happened. It kind of made sense to me because I had a conversation with someone recently about not being able to link to a local file any more. If storing the notebook locally your problem, I found a keyboard shortcut that seems to do the trick that I was very pleased to find! Try ctrl+k, which brings up a pop-up for links. Select the page from your local notebook you want to link to in the bottom option. It worked for me! I was able to link from one page to another on that local notebook. I was actually surprised as I did not think I would find an answer to this, so thanks for the question! If the problem is something else, or has to do with Teams I don't have an answer for you. If you are on Facebook, you can join the OneNote Bullet Journal group that I host and ask the question there - we have lots of helpful people! I want to give credit where credit is due - here is the article that gave me the answer: www.bettercloud.com/monitor/the-academy/3-ways-to-link-in-onenote/ ~Michele

I cannot seem to make links in the O365 online versions. Any ideas? 1) If I create the Onenote document using version 2013 or version Win 10, the links work in the application but then do not work when I open the same OneNote doc in an O365 teams tab. 2) If I try to create the OneNote document in the O365 version right in Teams, there is not an option (in my version) to copy link to paragraph. Any ideas....?
@MicheleChristensen
@MicheleChristensen 4 года назад
Sorry Paul, I don't use OneNote within Teams currently. My only guess is that it may have something to do with where your OneNote files would be stored when you use OneNote within Teams vs. use OneNote by itself. I hope you find the answer! ~Michele

Is it possible to create an link without text? Instead, I'd like to click on a area of a picture I've inserted. For example, I insert a picture or diagram of a factory, and I want to create a link to a page about the conveyor belt, such that when you click on the conveyor belt in the picture, it takes you to the conveyor belt page. I'd like to be able to click on either the entire image, or an area within the image. Both would be useful.
@MicheleChristensen
@MicheleChristensen 4 года назад
Hi Elias, I love your idea but unfortunately I don't think there is a way to do that in OneNote. In both OneNote for Windows 10 and OneNote 2016 you can right-click an image and add a link but the only way I was able to open the link was to right-click on the image and select open link. This is unlike other apps or a text link where the cursor changes to a pointer so you know you can click it. One idea that might get you closer to what you need is to put an image on top of a background image and make the smaller image a link. In your example, you could put the factory picture in, put a smaller picture of the conveyor belt on top of the factory and then add a link to the conveyor belt. I'm not sure if this helps at all. You can make a suggestion for this feature to the OneNote team here onenote.uservoice.com/ Thanks for your question! ~Michele

Yes Maximus Animations, good reminder! To create a new page with a link to it at the same time, you can type [[Orange]] on the page you are on right now. Or, if you want a word to link to a website, e.g. when something says "click here," then highlight the word and click insert from the top menu. One of the options will be a link. When you select that, you get pop-up box where you can fill in the site url. Hope that helps! ~Michele
