Yes! Talc is a mineral that is contaminated with asbestos. It should never be used. In the US J & J was sued for causing ovarian and testicular cancer. They engage in a lot of coverups and test all their products repeatedly on animals despite animal testing being poor science. Animal tests give them plausible deniability. I don’t buy any of their products because of a long history of deceptive practices. Ex. Baby powder is not tested once on animals, instead these tests are conducted repeatedly on animals with same results to protect the company from negligence. A common practice sadly.

Great video as always Donna!!! Your so informative and fun to listen too.. this isn’t much of a tip, but I have a cheap basin that I fill with warm water and a little bit of washing soap beside me, when I’m done using the pallet knives and stencils..I just throw them into the basin to soak. I clean them in the there and then give them a second washing in the sink. I kinda get busy making art and tend to set my stencil or knives to the side, well… there much harder to clean when they are dry.. hence why had to do this method.. 😅❤.. Have a wonderful day my friend/ twinsie.. 😊🎄♥️

Thanks for this video and your tips. I’ve made my own texture paste, too, but without the glue-just straight acrylic paint and baby powder. I’ve got one small collage piece I did two years ago using it and the stencil work is still intact. One thing: adding baby powder to acrylic paint reduces the natural gleam of the paint , so when it dries it looks more matte than straight acrylic paint, maybe a bit more like chalk paint. I’m wondering if your formula, with the pva glue, helps to keep a bit of the shine.
@JunkJournalideas

Thanks for the explanations of the recipe Donna. I had wondered why I couldn't buy Talcum Powder any more ! I'll try with Cornflour - UK name - it is rather confusing to me in the UK that common or garden household stuff has different names. e.g. Baking Soda = bicarbonate of soda, not "Baking Powder" (Bicarb + tartaric acid/cream of tartar - see what I mean?) So my question is - do you know what "spackling paste" is? It seems to be used by modellers to add texture. Is it "Polyfiller?" Can YOU make it? Re cleaning up - I'd have a washing up bowl of warm soapy (washing up liquid) water handy. Pop the stensils in as soon as you have finished with them and rinse the paste off immediately. Ditto a jam jar of water to keep the spatula in when it is not in use. Kitchen Roll (paper towel) at the ready! There's nothing harmful in the ingredients. I'm the responsible dish washer any way!😇
@JunkJournalideas
@JunkJournalideas Год назад
you're welcome Jacky, changing the talcum powder recipe is not surprising these big companies all about cuts to make more money. the names get me too i'm always googling lol. "spakling paste" is what builders use to either repair or finsing plaster walls, it's handy for crafting! I'm not sure if you can make it? i havent tried. thanks for your cleaning up tip paper towel is awesome stuff! it's been lovely chatting ❣ 🦋hugs Donna

do we add clolours to this mixture or we add colour in place of white paint to get colout?
@JunkJournalideas
@JunkJournalideas Год назад
the variation colour i have used is a cream using a bit of yellow to the white, it's only ever been subtle to take the stark white away, and then no need to add colour over top. if you want to use blue paint instead of white you can, but your colour will be dictated by the amount of paint you use as the recipe (same amount as if it was white) if you have some pigment paints you could add that if you want more colour bc pigment shouldn't alter the recipe too much. hope this helps Sudarshan hugs Donna

Hi Donna, will this texture paste work as a resist for Distress Oxide inks?
@JunkJournalideas

hey Lin I don't have any oxide in my stash, but i'm thinking the oxide would more than likely colour the texture paste rather than act as a resist? the paste is kinda porous, but only a test would really tell you for sure ♡☆🦋 crafty hugs Donna

@JunkJournalideas
@JunkJournalideas 14 дней назад
thanks Susane, I use baby powder because it is very fine and easy to get a hold of, you can also use corn starch if you don't mind using a food grade powder, its fine as well and it's an ingredient used in the baby powder now rather than talc that used to be used many years ago. I havent used the cornstarch i've only used baby powder and it works a treat 😍🥰🦋 hugs Donna

@JunkJournalideas

mine didn't crack at all, if your using on paper, and the stencils i use are quite thin, it shouldn't turn out thick enough to crack. I also air dry which helps ♥︎♡☆🦋 crafty hugs Donna

Hi. Can the PVA glue be replaced with Glossy Acrylic Medium? (Usually used for collaging or as glue.) I bought 2 big containers full at a sale not realising that it is glossy (I don't like glossy medium for college). And can I add Distress Oxide re-inker to add colour instead of the paint? I guess the glue would have to be more then? Maybe that's an experiment you would like to do and give us the results... Please? TFS this recipe ❤

hey Swannwillow, I don't know about the recipe change you have asked me about? I have not tried GAmedium bc the cheep glue works so well. I think I'll stick to the recipe as I always have bc it has served me well, by all means experiment with what you have and let me know how it goes if you do decide to alter it, tbh I have no clue as to how you would take the place of the acrylic paint portion if you eliminate it? ☆🦋 crafty hugs Donna

g'day Janelle, i reckon you could bc this recipe is such a small batch give it a go, one this is it will be a light colour so if you can live with this it will work, if you dont add too much paint it will thin it out lots and spread not giving you the best finish, so a high pigment paint will work best 😍🥰🦋 hugs Donna

Hello. I just bought a cheap brand modeling paste (Focus brand) but it's a creamy in texture unlike the Tim Holtz brand which has a bit thick texture. Is it okay if I add the baby powder on my paste to give it a bit thick and rough texture? Will that work as well?

I would be reluctant to use corn starch because if it gets wet it can mold. Acrylic paint is susceptible to mold if food products are introduced. Mold in the ecosystem of your paints and brushes can be quite a disaster. I know art supplies are expensive. I wish they weren't. But replacing all your paints and perhaps brushes from mold is also expensive. This can be looked up.
@JunkJournalideas
@JunkJournalideas Месяц назад
this would be true if you made too much and never used it. I have made 3 batches of this in tiny amounts, and only a small leftover went mouldy in the jar once, nothing was damaged because i, and i would emagine most people clean up emediately after use. i tossed a couple of tablespoons of texture paste to the trash. Mould is nasty I realy appreciate your tips and the concern you have shared to all our fellow crafters, thank you 😃🦋 hugs Donna

these homemade pastes are only good with stencils or other thin applications, if you use them in bulkier amounts they'll lose shape and the details will be gone (as you can see in the video, the store bought paste in the container still holds the form from previous use but the homemade one has a flat surface). also they stick to the pallet knife so unless you have sth like the stencil sheet between your surface and the pallet knife or you don't care how much the paste is gonna stretch and mess with your work while you're removing the pallet knife from the surface, you can't really use it. at least this is my experience with homemade pastes. anyone has any suggestions to avoid these?
@JunkJournalideas
@JunkJournalideas Год назад
hey Rose your right this paste is pretty much intended for thin stencils and is recipe for anyone who can't afford the over priced store bought paste. every time I've used it it does hold its shape no problem the only time it collapes if it's to thin, if that happens you add less liquid, either paint or glue or add more powder until you get the right consistency. I've never experienced it sticking to my palet knife either and I've used both plastic and metal knives. I always wipe paste back on the edge of the jar then wipe clean with paper towel and leave in a glass of water and it is so easy to clean bc it never has much to Remove, hope these tips help to compare with the way you have mixed it and used it
