In this video i'll show you how i upgrade my dv6 laptop (6100 series). I'll replace the original HDD with a new one (SSD); i replace the original RAMs (2x 4GB - PC10600 SO-DIMM 204 pin) with new ones (2x 8GB - PC10600 SO-DIMM 204 pin) and i replace the optical drive for DVD with a caddy for a new hard disk (CADDY thickness 12.7 mm - serial SATA interface).
PART ONE: Replacing Hard disk (1:01)
PART TWO: Replacing RAM (4:31)
PART THREE: Replacing optical drive with caddy (5:45)
- Remove original bezel (6:43 - 8:45)

I apologize for the quality of the video in some scenes but i discovered that my phone doesn't support the autofocus in video-mode. However, also if the ram properties are not visible, every part of the video it's clear and understandble.

Thanks a lot. This is really helpfull specially for me newbie. It saves me my trouble. Im not an IT nor something related and when I tried to reformat my PC (sloppy work), I got the same error and gave me a hell lot of headache. And by this video, my PC is working perfectly fine now. Great Video ... I have a DV6 6100 LM720AV Hi there. Which SSD do you recommend. I see many models: SSD SATA3 SSD mSata (60mm and 30mm) SSD M.2 (42mm, 60mm and 80mm) I saw that my Wifi Card use a Port for mSata 30mm, or iam confused? I cant see another slot, am I missing something? Again. Which SSD do you recommend.?

I get information from the seller that max ram is 8GB, you said that you put 16GB - is it really working? Is there a pointo to even try to put there more thank 2x 4GB??

Great video. I have the same setup, but no matter what I do, the laptop does not recognize the HDD in the DVD slot. I don't see it in DiskManager. I completely reformated the HDD. No problem seeing it when plugged in a external HDD bay.

How did you install the the OS to the SSD from the HDD? Did you create startup disk?

you can follow two way: 1) make a copy of your old hdd trougth software like Norton ghost (and an usb/sata adaptor:www.amazon.com/StarTech-SATA-Drive-Adapter-Cable/dp/B00HJZJI84/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1496006762&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=sata+usb+3.0) or 2) you can buy a new windows OS (DVD) and install a new one OS (insert dvd, choose optical drive as first drive to read in bios setting, and follow the instruction to complete your installation).

+Yerbol Akhmetov hi, The possibility of installing a ssd through optibay depends on the sata interface typology. Unfortunately I don't remember the caddy one, however if it's a sata3 interface there won't be differences in putting the ssd in HDD

Ciao Sebastian, ho letto solo ora il commento. I supporti optical drive sono universalmente riconosciuti da quasi tutte le motherboard. Per rispondere alla tua domanda: si, può essere riconosciuto come supporto esterno, senza bisogno di driver, se lo colleghi tramite porte SATA. Se utilizzi un adattatore USB non so se ci sia bisogno di driver. Ciao!

MY interface is SATA-II though the SSDs are of SATA-III....hence they will clock at SATA-II only....

Ciao! Come hai fatto a capire le dimensione del caddy? Ho provato a leggere fra le specifiche tecniche ma non è riportata la dimensione del drive. Comunque ho un dv6 6169SL immagino sia praticamente identico al tuo o quasi.

Ciao +Luca Ioviero, prima ho tolto il lettore cd e poi ne ho misurato lo spessore. 12.7mm è infatti lo spessore del lettore e quindi del caddy. Spero di esserti stato di aiuto.

It is labelled on the slot usually, or maybe you can refer to the version already on your board for replacement.

+RJ Bucaneg you can find the informations of any component, which appears in this video, in the description... If you can't, please let me know. Anyway there are three big limitations for a Ram upgrade: -maximum amount of memory that your motherboard can read. -form factor of rams (directly related to the ddr spec) -"speed" of rams (directly related to the PC3-xxxxx number) Be sure to respect them! ;)

+RJ Bucaneg yes you're right, also for my dv6-6155sl the maximum, declared by HP, is 8Gb and now I remember... I searched information about motherboard (HM65) and chipset (i7-2670QM) and I found out they could read 16 Gb... So I bought the memory on amazon and I tried... Well it went out the computer could read it and now I have got 16 Gb... Try to find out informations about your MoBo and Chipset...

I actually see that your laptop is the same as mine. That being the case I'm planning to upgrade my optical drive to a Blu-ray Drive, do you have any recommendations blu-ray drives?

+Aqua Tsurugi as you can see at 6:37, the interfaces between optical drive and the laptop are: .-SATA plug -Middle placed hole for screw -thickness of drive (12.7mm). If for the first two points you shouldn't worry about (because are identical for all optical drives), be careful for the last one, because there are two kind of drives with different thickness.

+ToMaZ ciao, le due tipologie di caddy in commercio differiscono tra loro per lo spessore. penso che il tuo richieda un caddy da 12,5 mm tuttavia ti consiglio di seguire la procedura nel video per rimuovere il lettore dvd e misurarlo.

+ToMaZ l'alimentazione del lettore dvd sul portatile avviene per mezzo della porta sata, quindi desumo che un convertitore possa bastare . Viceversa non saprei da dove alimentare il lettore dvd.

Ciao @yaproc, la massima quantità di RAM che puoi connettere alla scheda madre è riportata sul sito ark di Intel (chiaramente devi recuperare l'informazione relativa alla tua). Venendo alla tua domanda, nei limiti della capacità della scheda madre, puoi aggiungere quanta RAM vuoi anche due banchi con capacità differenti per i due slot (4GB+2GB ad esempio). Si consiglia di prendere due moduli compatibili tra loro in maniera da sfruttare la caratteristica di dual Channel. Single rank o dual rank inoltre non fa molta differenza nei portatili. Le single rank sono preferibili perché dissipano meno calore e consentono eventuali overclock, ma nei portatili non fa molta differenza. Non so se sono stato di aiuto, ti prego comunque di chiedere informazioni anche al venditore, in quanto io non sono né un tecnico ne un esperto di informatica👍

@@dodo56022 Grazie per la risposta. Ne approfitto per un'altra domanda. Ho sostituito il disco meccanico (che aveva Windows 7) con un disco SSD ove ci ho installato Widows 10 Pro. Il disco meccanico l'ho messo nel caddy senza farci niente. Il PC però non lo vede. Devo farci qualcosa?

Why should the optical drive be open before you take it out of the machine?

Because if you don't open it you won't be able to remove the bezel of your optical drive.

Hi Vinicio, yes i think it's a good machine to start with. What kind of language/program will you use?...anyway think at this machine like a Ford fiesta of 90'. Same exactly performance of modern car, just only less efficient and green.

@@dodo56022 I am using PHP, web stack (html, css, JS) and some frameworks like EXT-JS and Laravel. I had a Lenovo T440, but I sold it on a rampage kkkkk now I have to buy a new computer but on a low budget. I am considering to make hackintosh as well and this DV6 seems quiet good (I7 3630HQ, FullHD, GT 650M). But I don't really know if the daily usage is ok. Thanks man.

Ciao Massimo, purtroppo non riesco a recuperare le informazioni riguardo il tuo computer. Nel mio caso non ne ero sicuro al 100%, quindi ero pronto a restituire le RAM tramite Amazon.

Vorrei, se fosse possibile, oltre a sostituire l'hard disk con un più performante SSD, incrementare anche la ram, che nel mio caso è di 8gb, per rendere il mio laptop al meglio. Ciao.

@@acquasalsa se il processore è i7 2630qm, la pagina ark dell'intel ne quantifica il massimo utilizzo di RAM in 16Gb (ricordati di scegliere il giusto protocollo DDR3 con massima freq a 1333 MHz). Non so dirti se la scheda madre però li sopporta (ma questo non lo sapevo neanche del mio HP ed è per questo che ho fatto la prova).

@@dodo56022, in effetti il processore è il medesimo, i7 2630qm, e la ram è 8,00GB Canale Doppio DDR3 @ 665 MHz (9-9-9-24), così mi indica analizzando col software Speccy, il tutto gestito da Windows 10 pro 64 bit.

have you tried windows 10 you know Pavilion dv6 has two GPU , i did changed to Windows 10 pro but i lost the AMD RADEON GPU , only using now intel 3000 GPU , since AMD here only works on windows 7 and last upgrade was in 2012 , really man AMD sucks .
