SOLVED - HP Laptop dv6 Overheating Loud Fan Fix on DV6 | DV7 

Hi! I did it!!! I don't think I'd have attempted dismantling my laptop had it not been for you and this video, so I want to say THANK YOU!!!! You gave me the confidence I needed to plunge into this very difficult job. And, now my laptop is working nearly as well as it did when I first bought it. I simply can't thank you enough. In fact, the reason that I chose to use your video to help me through this is that I have the exact same computer (Pavilion dv6-6c10us), and this is the only video that shows exactly how to dismantle THIS computer. Having gone through the job, using your video as a coach (I used my husband's computer and played the video, pausing it as I completed each step), there are some observations and questions I have, as well as some suggestions for other folks like me, who'd like to tackle this job and save themselves upwards of $125 or even $150 to have someone else do it. 1. First, I suggest that people watch the whole video from beginning to end to understand what you'll be doing and what you'll need to have handy. Some things I found to have handy were: an assortment of small phillips and flat-head screwdrivers (it was immensely helpful to magnetize the tip of the phillips-head screwdriver by running across a magnet in one direction; apparently, it's magnetized just enough to hold the screw but not enough to mess with the components); a pad and pencil to write down everything you do in the order you do it, like leaving a trail of breadcrumbs for the return trip; an assortment of small containers, like small dixie cups, bowls, coasters, or even an egg carton to hold the various screws from the various places and a way to label the containers; a clear head; plenty of time; and a shot or two of whisky (just kidding about the last one). Also, a strong light (like a halogen), a loupe for seeing small things, a comfortable and uncluttered work space, and relaxing music. :-) 2. I noticed that you were VERY thorough in explaining some things, but other things you did off-camera, and I really had no idea how to do them. For example, when taking out the hard drive, I had to remove the four screws that secure the hard drive itself in its carrier and take it out of the carrier before I was able to disconnect the cable. I didn't know that, and it took me a while to sort that out. There were several other things like that. Sometimes you'd indicate that something needed to be done, but you'd have done it already off camera, and so there was no way to know HOW to do that thing. I wonder if in future videos, rather than doing parts of the job off-camera, you might consider just speeding up the segments so that a person can potentially see everything you're doing and can perhaps pause or slow down the segments themselves to see what's involved in what you're doing. That would have been enormously helpful to me! 3. When it comes to cleaning the actual fan, you mentioned that your fan blades didn't look too dirty and so there was no need to open the housing and clean inside. My fan blades didn't look too dirty, either, but I'm glad I went ahead and opened it up, because there was a LOT of dust up against the fins of the heat sink that didn't even come out with blowing backward into the fins from outside. The only way I'd have known about that dust (and would have been able to clear it) was by dismantling the fan housing itself. I recommend to anyone whose computer is overheating and running loudly, if you're going to go as far as dismantling your laptop to deal with the problem, take the extra step and dismantle the fan housing, too, even if the fan blades don't look so bad. There's dust in there you won't see until you open up the housing. 4. Finally, here's my big question. :-) Your excellent coaching only went so far as taking apart the computer, but we're pretty much left alone to put the thing back together ourselves, and that was not the easiest thing to do. In fact, I had gotten it all back together, but it wouldn't turn on, so I had to take it all apart again and re-reassemble it. The second time was the charm ~ all except the touchpad, which is no longer working. It's not the end of the world because I don't use the touchpad all that much, and I happen to have a USB touchpad that is working fine. I'm in no mood to open the computer up again so soon, but I guess I will at some point in the near future, and I wonder if you could tell me what I missed. I obviously disconnected the touchpad, or it somehow got disconnected, and I don't know what to look for to reconnect it. Could you tell me? How far will I have to go in the dismantling process before I can reconnect my touchpad? And, how exactly do I do that? Again, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your kind help and encouragement. My computer is as quiet as a ... well, I hate to say it, but "mouse," it's working nearly perfectly, processing quickly, quietly, and efficiently; it's practically like new, and you're the reason why! Never opened a computer in my life before this! Followed the video carefully to clean my fan... and now it doesn't sound like shit anymore! BIG THANK YOU!!! Great tutorial!!!

*VERY IMPORTANT* : at 9:52 before you remove mobo you must loosen the HDD and CD cables. Pay special attention to how they were so that you can position them back later. Also there are two screws holding the the fan (and mobo) to the body which you have to remove. Unfortunately this tutorial is incomplete and the user risks *damage* without these steps so it it would be nice place these tips as annotation in the video. Also at 6:12 you forgot to show us that we must undo three more small ribbon cables. Also at 9:35 you forgot to tell us that we must remove four screws in the battery bay to remove this silver panel (which is necessary to remove the mobo).

Excellent instructional video! I found a DV6 the same as this one in the rubbish with the ram and HDD removed. Added these parts and a fresh install of Win7, it comes up with the overheating warning. Thanks to this video, I can buy a new fan and battery and should have a great new machine. Cheers!!

Thank you so much, I could always disassemble it up to where the motherboard was exposed, but I had no idea you had to disconnect the wireless card to actually release it! This is a really simple and useful video ^^

Really good instructions (with the add ons below). Putting new grease on helps well, but still need to power down the CPU to reduce the heat load and fan speed further. Anyway, before that video I could not have imagined to disassemble and reassemble a LapTop. And ALL worked immediately after switching it on again. THANK YOU very much!

Great video that helped me alot! I actually stopped when i got to the point I could see the fan and just sprayed it with some air. Cleaned it out enough. The keyboard was tough but i got it and used a credit card to seperate the frame. I made sure i kept track of where the screws went. Next its trying out your chicken leg recipe! Thank you my friend!

I found this guide very helpful! Once i got the fan and mobo out, and opened the fan enclosure i discovered a thick layer of dust, completely blocking the heatsink, which was only visible once i got inside the fan. I cleaned it all out, and also applied new silver grease on the processor. My temps with from idliing at 50c, and peaking near 100c - down to 34c idle and 65c peak!!!

Good video pal, would have been nice to see the rebuild done step by step also. I know it's pretty much straightforward, as in just the reverse procedure, but it's always good to be able to see someone else do it. Just makes it easier. Thanks though bud, much appreciated :-)

This is just what I needed for my AMD budget laptop processor upgrade! I wasn't too sure if this computer has removable CPU from the last time I opened mines, but now I know it does! I actually did some cooling mods for this computer. This laptops cooling design utilizes cool air by sucking air through the tight spaces from the 3 vents on the bottom, and cooling down a large section of the computer. The problem with this design is that there is not enough air to cool down the processor, let alone the GPU which makes it worse in higher spec laptops. There is no direct cooling for the heat sinks near the fan so its less effective. In addition, HP puts dust screens on those intake vents which suffocates it more and increases more heat, and prematurely drys off of the thermal paste. Since you can already have the skills to open and clean this laptop, I suggest you to remove the dust screen vents if you don't mind dust cleaning with a air spray periodically. You can also cut out the exhaust vents on the plastic chassis so all that heat doesn't circulate back into the cooling system through the casing itself and block external air flow. I find that cutting the plastic vent grills cuts down the noise down close a whisper on max load. I also find that without the grills, it cut about 2-3 Celsius off in my experience. My most recent extreme cooling mod was drilling a nickle to dime size hole right on the laptops chassis, right below the fan vents so it sucks in fresh cool air towards the heat sinks. All together, my stock max temps of 165-170F improve to an average 148F.

This sounds like a weekend project. My DV6 vas awsome when i got it years ago. But my fan is makeing noice and the temps are crazy. I underclocked it just to have a chance to use it. But even then the cpu throttled due to high temps. I tried to disassembly the DV6 before but i quit mid through. With your exelent instructions i would give it a try again.

Good job on the video. Thanks. At 1:45 in the video you talk about using your nails to remove the lid above the disk drive. However, the dv6 has a latch release to perform the lid release. If you move the battery release lever in the opposite direction, it will pop open that lid.

Great tutorial! As a former Lenovo field technician, I would recommend (if possible) using an anti-static mat; particularly when handling the system board. It looks like some type of bed spread or blanket in this video which are magnets for static and EMI. Especially in winter months.

Hi, very nice video. I recently repaired the same model laptop. One additional step would be to remove the fan from the casing (4 small screws on the metal cover) and clean the openings to both radiators. On the one I repaired, the radiators were completely clogged on the inside, stopping the airflow and causing the computer to overheat.

Hey do you have an idea why my fant might not be working properly (loud noise) even after i cleaned it. I even went one step further and got the termal coumpond kit. I cleaned everything I had to before applying it and I made sure I dint put to much or not enough of it. After everything i did my fan still makes a really unbearable noise even if I dont do any major tasks on my laptop. Being on facebook or youtube sometime causes it to overheat. Ps its and older model of the same laptop youre cleaning in the video.

thanks, helped me out too. The only thing you didn't show was disconnecting the monitor flat plug from the motherboard, you have to pull that quite hard for it to pop off. Other than that, great. Was easy. I took my fan completely apart as the blades looked ok, but the exhaust was clogged up. So I recommend to others to do the same. This meant the air couldnt get blown across the heatsink copper pipes as there was a wall of dust 5mm thick. now temp is 45oC and no fan :))))

THANK YOU, you're instructions were great. One important correction is for users to take off the 4 little screws to take off the fan since the inner grill of the vents that you can't see from the outside will be absolutely clogged with dust after years of use. It takes a few extra minutes but this missing step is very important.

It really helped me out to fix the overheating problem. Thank you! However, now my touchpad is not working..Lights around are on but there is no cursor. I double tapped the corner on top but didn't work. I checked the flat cables under the keyboard and they are well connected. I might have missed to connect something. Do you have any idea?
