HOW TO EASILY REPLACE the 3-PRONG CORD on a DRYER with a 4-PRONG CORD.
4-prong cords have been required on dryers for almost 30 years, but what happens if you move into a home that has a 4-prong outlet, but your dryer has a 3-prong cord. You do NOT need to go out and buy a new dryer. Changing the cord is a fairly simple procedure that should take less than 20 minutes. This video will show you exactly how to replace your dryer cord.

Nice, down to the point. I'm sure the sudden switch from 3 wire to 4 wire dryer and range caused some endless confusion among homeowners and DIY'ers 'in 1996 particularly for baby boomers that grew up with electric ranges and dryers and brought a brand new house in 1996 or shortly after only to find out the cord and plug on the appliances they used in their previous home don't fit this new fangled receptacle. On the flip side, existing 3 wire dryer/range receptacles are grandfathered in if the home was wired under the 1993 NEC or earlier, meaning it is permissible to swap from a 4 wire to 3 wire cord to fit the receptacle. For these reasons the cords typically must be purchased separately when you buy a new dryer/range, and they can also be hardwired, although I've personally only seen that done in some apartments to make it more difficult for tenants to steal the appliances from the property when vacating.

Not sure exactly how old it is I can figure it out tonight when I get home from work. And yes I have a voltage meter.

I did some research and found a few things. A couple of easy things to do - First make sure that every connection you did to install the cord is tight. The multimeter is not going to be easy to use after all. I thought you could test the motor by just checking the resistance between the prongs on the cord. Some research I found also said that beside the motor possibly going out, the heating element could be going out. Lint buildup could restrict airflow and cause overheating. I would check those things to see what you find. If you don’t find anything, I would probably report it to the builder and see if they could have the electrician double check the breaker to make sure that there’s not a problem with the breaker. That’s unlikely, but it’s always possible.

It doesn’t have a purple test button. It’s a 30 AMP Eaton Ground Fault Breaker Type CHGF with the test button surrounded by Yellow.

I really want to help you figure this this out. Right now I’m a little bit baffled. That breaker could be tripping on overcurrent, or it could be tripping because of a ground fault. Did you replace your dryer cord because you moved into this new house or is it a new dryer to you? I’m just trying to figure out if everything was working before you made the switch.

It doesn’t trip immediately. It’s usually after 2-3 loads.

If you live in a newer house and have what we call dual function circuit breakers (normally with a purple test button) then you can do a little test. Watch this very short video and do the test. That will be the first thing to do to figure out why it might be tripping. If you don’t have these type of circuit breakers, let me know, and I’ll see what I can do to help you figure this out. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LMTl4Zs8lXA.htmlsi=RFggUQmV46MbOcjE

It’s a brand new house so I had to put replace the 3 prong cord on my dryer to a 4 prong cord.

Since you have to run two or three loads before it trips, I’m thinking it is not a GFCI problem. If you had done something wrong installing the new cord, I think the breaker whip trip immediately. I think it’s probably tripping on overcurrent. If the dryer motor is going out, the motor windings could be breaking down causing it to pull more current. Possibly, as you run multiple loads, the motor gets hotter, the resistance goes down and the current goes up, which could cause the breaker to trip. How old is the dryer and do you own a multimeter?

You said it is tripping after running a few loads or it trips immediately?
