Upgraded 4WD For Less Than $10K || From A Wreck To A Wildtrak

Upgraded 4WD for less than $10k and going from a wreck to a Wildtrak, seemed to good to be true. But in this instance, that was the transition. After losing my Prado 150 to bad fuel from a fill up in the outback, it became painfully obvious I needed another car to tow the van and get back on the road.
Then, following an insurance pay off and the kind introduction from a subscriber, I was on a plane off to Darwin, 1,000 kms away. I couldn't find this specific car on car sales or gumtree, but I found it through introduction, which was even better. A glowing report from an independant pre-inspection test and the keys were mine, all for less than $10K.
Follow the highs and lows of the buying process in this video.

Best of luck with your WildTrak hopefully yours is better than our PX Mk1 WildTrak. Our automatic transmission let go at 43,000km. Apparently the fluid wasnt going to the heater exchanger common fault. The engine blew up at 86,000km. Injectors. Then the automatic let go again at 102,000km. We fixed it and traded it in for a Hilux which has now done 48,000km towing our MDC single wheel offroad van.

On the road again, now time for your extra items such as wire mesh in front of condenser, real air filter no high flow as dust is too fine. Replace oil in every thing & filters, check wheel nuts will undo and that jack works, fit lock fuel cap, maybe extra mudflaps at rear as vehicle is raised rocks hitting the van behind. Get floor mats if none for mud is boundless. Use pure water in windscreen washer bottle, just in case you run out of water to drink in outback.

Congrats on the new truck..I did mention to you, think was last video, that there was more than Toymotas out there as tow tugs, that I have the BT50 and fitted out not a lot more than what you ended up with......FYI...from square on to middle of radiator looking into engine bay, there is a wiring harness that sits bang on top of the engine timing cover...sharp edge cuts its way into the harness and many problems...I placed a small piece of tube split down the side and placed over that edge, then lay the harness back down.....Also, be aware of the oil changing dangers associated with this 3.2 litre motor...A quick Google will explain the process.....Hope all goes well for you buddy....cheers

Just come across you, and enjoying. I am impressed by your calmness in these difficult situations. I think it mainly comes from being able to afford to get out of difficulties. I have travelled far and wide, and have horror stories because of unscrupulous people when I was struggling financially. The stress goes through the roof when broke, but then I had times when I had a fair bit of money and nothing stressed me. Ticked and subbed.

Looks like you’ve got yourself well organised. Well done. Here’s a tip for insect repellent on your face. Hold the can close up to your cupped hand and spray until wet. Then slap your hands together and rub on your face. Much easier to avoid eyes, nostrils and mouth.

Towed a 3 ton van around oz with a bt50, which is mechanically identical to your ranger. Great vehicle. Did it easy but would recommend a transmission cooler and always use sports mode for towing to keep the converter locked up and reduce the heat. Enjoy!
@glenod
@glenod Год назад
Id recommend installing a lock up kit for any one towing with an auto. I did one in 2017 in my 200 series ( 2.5 ton van ) best thing i ever did, trans temps dropped, fuel economy was way better and stopped the auto hunting around.
@Sabumnim666
@Sabumnim666 Год назад
I disagree no need for a trans cooler rather have the thermostat removed and buy a ultra gauge or a scan gauge which show the trans temp and the pan temp. been proven that the thermostat mostly failed shut so caused the over heating. as for the sport mode these new card are designed to run in drive and they work fine I tow my 2850kg van with my 10 speed ranger never have on issue and yes I always monitor the temps driving in 38deg C the trans never crossed 170 Fahrenheit I also towed my 20ft glass boat full of fuel at 2700kg with my 3.2, 6 speed, both in drive never an issue. The sports mode towing is not realistic.

Good video and great your back on the road. You need 30 micron filter then 5 micron. Check Mr Buckaroonie, year ago fuel filter video. 5 micro will let water through but 30 micron will help taking out water.

Given that it's had a tune and exhaust, I'd assume it's had the rubber intercooler hoses replaced with aftermarket upgrades. If not, it's an urgent priority because they all split. Usually you can easily see the split. As someone else mentioned, make sure you get a transmission service no later than every 40,000 when towing, and get a transmission cooler as the factory cooling does not cover towing loads.

For Paul's sake, show us the car! Have you found any way of guarding against bad fuel? There must be a pre-filter or something to stop this happening?
@peterbarber7613
@peterbarber7613 Год назад
Benjamim. He had a pre filter on the other car
@teeanahera8949
@teeanahera8949 Год назад
Post filter makes more sense, factory filter takes out the larger contamination and a smaller micron filter catches what is left and if you’d read the additions there is another filter with glass bowl (to see water).

Hi Paul I hope your ranger lasts longer than mine. I had one from new with all the extras that yours has and allways serviced it on time and it blew up at about 200000 kms... They have a common fault with injector number 5 giving up the ghost and wrecking the motor. There have been reports of them doing that much earlier than mine... so get your service guys to check the injectors, because FORDS deny any problem with them..( bullshit) Anyway keep up the good work and enjoy your travels. Joe

Just one photo? Heated seats, so necessary in Darwin. How many km? Does the Wildtrack have more 4 wh driving gizmos than the XL or XS? As mentioned oil changes need to be fast as the pump is not self priming. The EGR cooler will total the engine if not serviced (or negated) after about 140,000km. I had to use some 32mm poly pipe split and used to cover the wiring harness as it goes over a sharp bit of engine moulding right in front of you on the engine at the top as you open the bonnet. It will wear through and you will see wear on it so lift up the harness and look for wear underneath. Wrap in duct tape immediately until you can get something more substantial to stop the friction with the sharp engine moulding. Under the driver’s side rear seat is room for an auxiliary battery, I keep an Optima dual function battery there and it is connected to the van and a Redarc smart battery isolator. It can be used as a starter battery if the starter batt fails or run the van fridge while driving. The Ranger is a great truck but with the 50mm lift and inaccessibility of the 5 cylinder motor it can be challenging to work on. Oh and the turbo cooler pipe used to crack on mine but they have a better flexi bend in that tube now I think. Get an engine/water temp gauge as the standard dashboard dials tell you of failure AFTER the failure. I am going to get the engine diagnostic machine thingy to trouble shoot codes. Limp mode is not your friend when a simple problem occurs.

Hi Tee, A quick response. I have googled the difference between XLS and wildtrak, there seems to be little difference. Mine is the 3.2 litre. Mostly looks, has the wildtrak sticker on the side, side steps are more like rock sliders, leather steering wheel, orange stripes on pseudo leather seats, that's all I can see. Probably a couple of features I missed. Mostly the looks I think 🤔

you do know you can't tow 3500kg with any ute your maximum is 3500 so take the car to be weighed loaded with all your travel gear and passengers get it on the weighbridge get the new weight with all the gear and then get the original weight of the car and your weight now the take the difference off your 3500 and that will be your maximum weight of what you can tow i imagine by your accessory list your new maximum tow weight will be approx. 2700kg all the accessories and people and luggage travel gear etc comes off your max tow weight
@einfelder8262
@einfelder8262 Год назад
Correct - maximum tow weight of 3500kg is an advertising gimmick in terms of what can be legally towed, but it does attest to the strength of the chassis, driveline, etc of the vehicle.
@dishevellednomad
@dishevellednomad Год назад
Agree, GCM is the key, which will be 6000kgs, depending on how much is in that tub, GVM or rear axle weight may be the limiting factor.
