You can use these with Chirp, but you have to select the GM-5RH model.

Baofeng is finally moving forward when it comes to charging. All the new models appear to accept USB-C connection for cabling and some of the aftermarket batteries are also going USB-C. This makes it so much better than requiring a cradle or proprietary USB cable in order to charge the radios. This makes it SO MUCH MORE supportable in a mobile or emergency capacity, especially since it uses the same USB-C cable all electronics (Sorry Apple) are going to. As you mentioned, nearly everyone has a USB-C cable or can walk into any gas station and get a replacement if needed. The only issue I see is the location of the charging port. It would have been better to be out the side or bottom, instead of directly out the back. This means you pretty much have to pull you radio out of any holster to charge instead of being able to charge it inside any holder you may be using to carry the radio.

It's great to see someone who I kinda move in the same circles, reviewing these. I'm trying to figure out my first gnrs radio and it seems like I can't beat baofeng. But I'm trying to get something with USB c, good antenna, maybe color screen and Roger tone (I think). Any advice or guidance you can give would be greatly appreciated. Maybe an ip rating would be good

I just got mine, and using the Baofeng software, I was able to provide a name for the first repeater that I programmed into it. Now both of my radios show the name I specified for the repeater instead of the frequency. I input the name on the far-right column on line #40 -- so the radio voice announces the selection as 40 (with "040" showing in the far right of the display).

Try UV 17 on CHIRP. I have a UV5R Max that CHIRP recognizes as a UV17

Very cool. What is your attitude towards MURS? I think it could be another option for 'preppers' in conjunction with GMRS if you're in an area where everyone is yapping away on GMRS chs.

Murs is cool but its only 5 channels right now, however it is less used so it could come in handy. I have reviewed a few MURS radios as well

Are you able to hold down the up/down arrows to quickly scroll through channels or do you have to keep on pressing it over and over again to move channels? Also, are you able to charge USB - C to USBC Or only USB-a to C only?

the charging feature on this is like these is like the charging feature on my Baofeng walkie talkies, I can charge both off one cable because of the 2 usb c tips on the same cable

I went onto Radioddity’s website and downloaded their software for the 5G+ and it’s working flawlessly. None of the TDI cables were being recognized with Chirp or the Baofeng software. I’m able to do everything including name certain channels. The only problem I have is manually adding channels on the 5G+’s keyboard.

I bought a pair of the UV-5G plus units a week ago. Went to Baofeng website to check for larger batteries. The UV-5G Plus can not be found anymore; I'm assuming they are no longer being manufactured.

Does the usb-c matter since you can plug the regular charger into a usb port my 3A charge ports in my car charge no problem with a backup solar panel I never have battery issues.

Ok. Maybe I’m completely wrong and off base but my issue with radios that require a repeater is that during an SHTF situation, if repeaters go down you just basically have a 5 watt walkie talkie with very limited range. I’m thinking of going with a CB system. From what I’ve seen and read, you can have a base unit with hundreds of watts of transmitting or have a unit in your car with hundreds of watts. I think that type of set up would be much more useful for SHTF AM I WRONG ? What am I missing ?

If I recall, cb is limited to 4 watts unless you modify your radios to go way above that. Also cb antennas are far larger than ham, murs, or gmrs ones and so having a portable unit with decent range is very impractical on cb whereas on the others it makes perfect sense.

@@fallenspirit123 I understand the limitations of the hand held CB but for the vehicle and a base station, I can amplify them and get much greater distances. Don’t really know which direction to go with comms but I’m leaning towards CB. My issue is with repeaters, I just believe if something causes cell towards to go down, so will the repeaters for ham and GMRS and render them practically useless. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@concernedpatriot.2221 it doesn't hurt to have multiple options. There are ruggedized portable repeater systems out there so people can deploy their own at a moments notice. Also some ham and gmrs base and mobile units have the capability to also function as a repeater.

@concernedpatriot.2221 many repeaters already in place are designed with disaster situations in mind. By this I mean they have redundant systems, solar power, or generator backup capable of keeping the systems online for at least a week or longer. Also many repeaters can interlink and form larger networks. I would highly reccomend you read up on ham and gmrs as there is a lot of neat technology out there.
