On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

The Raytheon version is obviously the superior missile. Longer range and the ability to go cold while the missile is still pressing the bandit without an additional pod reducing maneuverability and speed enhances the survivability and the kill probability... It's a no brainer imo. I mean how big would that pod have to be to illuminate a bandit at 60+ miles? Idk just seems a bit far-fetched to me.
@GrowlingSidewinder
@GrowlingSidewinder Год назад
I agree I think the pod is very optimistic and I think it’s also very dependent on u as the pilot not causing masking issues as you go cold, which would break the lock, it’s just another thing to worry and think about.
@Imugi007
@Imugi007 Год назад
@@GrowlingSidewinder yeah I was thinking about that too. What happens if the pilot dives to the ground and the bandit stays high? It would have a hard time looking back and up at a bandit without getting masked by the aircraft...

Honestly, these two versions of the AIM-152 don't feel like they were intended to fill the same role. The Hughes/Raytheon (/McDonnell-Douglas) version is clearly intended to be very long range and fast while requiring the least amount of guidance from the mothership possible; great for targeting cruise missiles and bombers. The General Dynamics/Westinghouse version was intended to be reasonably long range, agile, and inexpensive; great for missile trucks and use against enemy aircraft (the use of an electro-optical sensor for terminal guidance is an especially interesting choice).

I can see one benefit of using the pod for initial guidance, and that's the ability to quickly upgrade. Just replace the pod with an upgraded version and ouila, better guidance. Much easier than replacing the seeker units on all of the missiles. Not to mention, cost savings on not having to miniaturize components. The downside is if your aircraft buys it, then your missiles probably won't get you revenge for your death. LOL

Hey GS, so me and my friend just recently got into DCS, and we've been doing F-15C vs MiG29S duels. We tried some BVR, and while I was able to win consistently with the F-15C, I noticed that my AIM120s never seemed to hit him more than 10 miles away, he was able to completely outmaneuver them at any longer ranges. Can you explain this? Everything I've learned and seen about the AMRAAMs tells me that they should be able to hit targets at least 20-30 miles away.
@popmordiscos
@popmordiscos Год назад
In earlier videos he talked about this, fist the range depends on the speed and altitude that the missile was launched at, in therms of what he said in other videos the kind of "kill zone" of the AIM120 is about 10 miles at sea level, 20 miles at around 20k feet and 30 miles at around 30k feet. Keep in mind that the initial speed of the missile also affects this metric and it also does not take into account any weird bugs or the use of countermeasures.

@GrowlingSidewinder Год назад
you will almost never SEE chaff, I use it all the time (so do the bandits) but its tiny foils of radar reflective material (as you said) which means when they get dumped you basically can't "see" them. so for the ratio that's up to the pilot and the mission they can take as much or as little chaff or flare as they like but I would imagine it's a lot more chaff than flare (flares are only if you are about to merge and that's not really supposed to happen ideally) unless you're air to ground like an A10 in which case you will bring a lot of flare in case of manpads. You see it's very mission dependant.

I’ve got an idea my bro. Polish F-16s vs Russian fighters, bandit unknown. Polish vipers scrambling to intercept at news of Russian attack on their territory. Vipers mission is to repel attack forces but not pursue and escalate outside of Polish territory. You do not know the enemies motivations you are there to defend home airspace as long as necessary.

Do they have the F-15EX on this?

how to tell apart if there is a fox2 or fox3 fired at your aircraft?

fox3 will give you RWR notification. fox2 will not.

I'd go with Raytheon before the video is over because of the range and the fact you've got to keep target painted...common sense to me..

What altitude is your aircraft considered in the cons?

Whenever it starts make con trails in the sky. The exact height varies on location, temperature, and humidity

Raytheon version all day. Raytheon version all the way. You should try shooting the AIM-152 from the Raptor next.

Based on the range comment I’m guessing the migs only have Alamo’s not adders
@GrowlingSidewinder

Even if they had the -1 adders they’d still be slightly out ranged by the c5 amraam.

Seeing how much different the GD version is from the Raytheon one, they should be given different designations. I'd suggest the AIM152 for the former and AIM172 for the latter.

loool well I think the idea is that they were both competing to become the official Aim152 the other was going in the trash.

@@GrowlingSidewinder I understand that, but jokes aside, back in the 70s when General Dynamics and Northrop were competing for the new fighter program, their respective prototypes were called the YF-16 and YF-17 (which was redesigned into the F-18 and was adopted by the US Navy) respectively. Same thing in the early 90s between the YF-22 and the YF-23. Then again, maybe that protocol just doesn't apply to ordnance.

oh I see what you mean, ya that's a fair point. I'm not sure actually you're right that its weird when you use the aircraft examples. I wish I could think of another missile program to see if they keep the same name or not but I don't know of any other than the 152 program.
