Upgrading a Harbor Freight Pressure Pot to Cast Bubble-free Urethane

The Harbor Freight pressure pot I bought was a lemon, so the standard approach to converting it for casting wasn't working. Here's how I expanded on the work others have done to get these pots working for casting urethane.

Thanks for the video! Your production quality is excellent and I appreciate your approach. I've watched over a dozen videos on modifying HF pressure pots in preparation for my own. You make a great point, the products are not consistent. I'm working on my own currently. For anyone in the planning phase, I suggest you examine your own pot to determine what components you will really need to modify for the design you have chosen. You may not need to change all the fittings, some might be in good condition. Each pot is a little different, based on user needs and inconsistent manufacturing. I purchased my own from HF. I found my gasket has one flat side, the other is curved. I lucked out to have a good gasket. This may have been a recent update to the product. I have no issues with the original gasket, yet. I replaced all the fittings aside from the 1/8" fitting on the inside that diverts the air flow inside the pot. I had hoped to use the 1/4" 1 to 2 tee piece and safety valve, but those pieces turned out to have leaks/were faulty that could not easily be repaired. I ordered a tee piece created from a single piece of metal (to avoid leaks) and a pre-configured 60 PSI safety valve. I am keeping all the original fittings in case I wanted to use the pot in the original configuration for painting in the future. One of threaded holes on the top of the lid is 3/8" and the other is 1/4". This seems to be true of every pot I have seen in all of the videos. There are so many different ways to configure your own. Thanks for the information! I love that you have included the files for the handles. If this becomes an issue with use, I will use your handle modification, that is a great idea!

After alot of work, I found out the silicone used is the GE Advanced Silicone 2™ Window & Door Sealant it took a lot of work to match this product to the video but the decals, coloring and words line up. It also a durometer 15.. I'm 75% sure this is what was used.
@GoodRoads
@GoodRoads 3 года назад
Sorry for the lack of clarity on that, I tossed the bottle assuming that 100% silicone is 100% silicone. Hopefully there are a lot of viable options in hardware stores out there, thanks for doing the digging!
@CptWashu

@@GoodRoads I live in a small town where walmart is the closest we have to a hardware store. So I had to do the digging. But hey I'm pretty sure I found the right product and if nothing else least the Durometer matches up it makes it easier for others to find it. I'm going to redo the seal on mine I used one with a higher durometer and it's leaking so I don't think that one's flexable enough. Hence why I did a lot more research into this. Hope this works out for me.

Hey man great video. I just fixed my HF pressure pot as well. I dont know how much difference there is between what you cast and the epoxy resin that I cast but I do know that I set my pressure between 40 and 50 psi and i can make clear resin that looks like glass now. Again I dont know if you can cast your material at that pressure but if you can that might totally eliminate any bubbles at all in your castings. Also instead of the tape I used high temperature liquid gasket sealer on my threads and after I tightened everything down and let it cure for 24 hours I have ZERO leaks. Ive had a deep pour casting of liquid glass in my pot set to 48 psi for the last 48 hours and the pressure hasn't moved at all. Just an idea I thought I'd share. I see you made this video 8 months ago so you've most likely fixed all your issues by now. But... Hope this helps if you are still having them. Take care man. Thank you for the idea on the 3D printed clamp handles. It's been a workout getting my pot sealed by hand with those little butterflies it comes with. I'm definitely going to figure out how to make some of those.

@GoodRoads 3 года назад
Thanks dude! I have been running mine at about 45psi and getting great results too, that seems to be the magic number. I'm happy to report that all my upgrades and repairs have been holding up great. The pot holds pressure for at least three days, I haven't had to contend with any longer cure times than that

I was just about to make one of these conversions myself, but the idea of a low quality pressurized bomb worried me. During my research I came across a new product from California Air Tools, where they created a new lid and connection setup for their existing 5gal pot and made a pressure pot for casting from the factory. Woodcraft has a custom model - 365CW, check it out.
@GoodRoads
@GoodRoads 4 года назад
Thanks for the heads up! I was looking at California Tools' stuff and their pots look like they're just better quality in general. If they've got a pot lid thats already meant for casting I'll 100% go that route when I upgrade

I'm way late to the game, but this is a great video that will probably save me some hair pulling. One comment though. By making a plywood base and running the handle thru the center, you have restricted the width of castings that you can place in the pot by one half. I've been doing a lot of pre-conversion research and someone said (and it makes sense) to just level the pot and pour in enough resin to bring the surface up above the curve bottom. Just let it cure hard, no need to worry about bubbles because it's just the base that your real castings will sit on.

Hey new Fan just came across your Video and it specks to all my problems I'm having. I have a few Questions..... 1. When you printed your MODs for your pot what filament did you use? PLA, PETG, or ABS? "I know the Gasket MOD it don't matter as that's a scraper so it doesn't matter.," 2. The handle adapter with you turning them what kinda print settings and filament do you recommend? 3. When you spoke about the 100% silicone and to the Durometer it saying it's 15. What is your recommendation here? 4. And last, You got a new Pressure Gage in a few videos later can you post a link to what you got? Great job. I'm having the same problems here with getting a good seal I'm losing a pound every 10 to 20 mins here... I hope making a new gasket or getting better torgue will help me in my lose of pressure. Or even just replacing my Gage. Sorry for all the question but out of all the Video's out there yours spoke the most to me... Thanks so much !!!!
@GoodRoads
@GoodRoads 4 года назад
Hey! I printed the handles in PLA, though you're right, something strong could probably be better. I think I did five walls and 30% infill at a 0.4mm line width? They're holding up so far, I figure if they break I can just print better ones. The silicone is actually working out. I think something in the 20-30a might live a longer life, but I'm not having problems with the 15a stuff. And this is the pressure regulator I ended up going with, it has also been working great: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PMNXPWQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00 I feel you, putting all the effort into the conversion just to have the pot leak is a real downer. With all of that stuff in place my pot seems to be holding pressure at 45-50psi for as long as I keep it clamped, I've even had a couple casts in there for more than 24 hours. Good luck!

@GoodRoads
@GoodRoads 4 года назад
I looked into whether the print-on-demand services would be a cost effective way to get the paddles made, but for what they charge you could buy a used monoprice mp-select and just have a printer. Someone mentioned that some libraries have printers, so that might be something to look into. If all else fails, you're just trying to get more leverage on the knobs, so you could make something out of wood. It might not be pretty but it should work.
