Upgrading a Press-In Spring Retainer - Remington 870 Tips & Tricks #13

In my first 870 Tips & Tricks video, I showed how a press-in 870 spring retainer can be replaced with a cup-style magazine follower - or even left out completely - to avoid the problems involved in installing & removing the retainer.
However, there are advantages to using a spring retainer, especially for multi-purpose sporting 870s. So in this video, I show how the troublesome 12ga factory part can be replaced with a Benelli spring retainer that's more advanced and far easier to use.
If you're wondering where I've been all this year, or why I'm wearing a Seahawks shirt four months after the Superbowl; this video was actually supposed to be completed and uploaded in late January. However, with the video about half-way finished, a sudden family medical crisis put all my personal projects on hold for several months. I've only been able to get back to my videos and other gun writing this May. More videos are coming, but don't hold your breath for monthly uploads in the near future.
I recommend watching this video with the annotations turned on. I'll be adding various notes to provide further details or to answer common questions, as well as links to other related videos where appropriate. There will be no giant flags blocking the video, and no begging for subscriptions or likes.
If you have any questions about this video, please ask in the comments below. I'd love to hear any suggestions you might have for future video topics.

Synchronizer has some of the best advice and videos about the Remington 870. He is thorough and explains things very well. Wondering how y'all feel about simply drilling 2 holes in the stock Remington spring retainer that would mimic the Benelli retainer (lowest price I found for the Benelli part was $23.50). That way you could use a pair of needle nose pliers in much the same way. Just a bit of squeeze would do the trick and probably not damage the integrity of the retainer. Wondering if the stock retainer is made of spring steel? I imagine a good metal punch would give you a divot to start the drill bit. Done upside down using a piece of wood as backing seems to me like it would work. DIY, no real expense.

You'd also need to make some notches to allow the factory retainer to bend easier. I'm sure it could be done, but that assumes you have the right tools (not everyone does) and the time to futz with the thing. Plus maybe spares on-hand in case you screw up. Even though I have the tools to do so, I'd rather pay the $15 - $20 for a ready-made, proven part and spend that time & energy on other projects where I don't have an easy off-the-shelf solution. Not sure exactly what the retainers are made of, but the metal is pretty brittle. I snapped one once just trying to bend a bottom corner in slightly to avoid scratches inside the tube.

Great video. I just ordered a Benelli retainer clip. My spring retainer clip is missing. The spring went flying out when I was doing a quick barrel switch with my buddies at a trap shooting event. Luckily it was just 4 guys that I know, we had to shut down the firing line so I could walk out front and recover my spring. I downloaded the 870 manual on line and read it, and watched some videos, I like this solution to make it easier to remove, but also to still be able to easily change the barrel, disassemble for cleaning, etc. BTW, this video was made in 2015, the Benelli part is now $24. Plus I purchased the snap pliers for $12 on Amazon and will keep them in the gun cleaning kit.

Thanks for the video. I removed my magazine tube dimples a long time ago to install a magazine extension and now I want to go back to the stock factory configuration but didn't know how I could punch new dimples in the tube to use the plastic factory spring retainer. I'll buy one of these metal tension spring retainers. The only down side is there is nothing to keep the magazine cap from coming loose over time. The original factory plastic push in and twist spring retainer had teeth that locked in with the magazine cap teeth and helped it from vibrating loose over time. I have an 1187 and there's no mag cap detent ball either. I'll just have to remember to check my mag cap for tightness before and after use.
@SynchronizorVideos
@SynchronizorVideos 6 лет назад
I'll be touching on methods for keeping a mag cap tight without a detent or internal-ratchet spring retainer in my next video. The 870 will work pretty well without a cap retention system, I've shot plenty of rounds of trap with a detent-less barrel & mag cap. You may just need to re-tighten it occasionally, as you said.

Synchronizer, your videos and conveyance of your accumulated knowledge about the 870 are/is top notch. I often recommend watching your vids to others. Couple of things about this issue as I mull it over. The Benelli part 60406, is now up to $19.95 US$ before shipping (lowest price I found casually). So, if you've limited funds and can do the drilling work on the original Remington part, it's becoming more and more of an option. If you can afford the Benelli part, it occurs to me that a wrap of tape around the exterior part will "fill the gap" nicely (Electrical tapes adhesives get gooey over time, maybe a Scotch type of tape would be best) regards to "fitment", possibly give a bit more metal to metal protection, and maybe (just maybe) increase the retaining resistance a bit. By the way, do you use straight up Acetal or Delrin rods when fashioning your own magazine plugs? Have you tried the Go Gauge (non LED) Follower? If so, would it limit shot shell (3") capacitance on a standard length magazine tube in a 2+1 shell configuration? Any familiarity with the S&J Hardware Type 3 follower and fitment issues for factory capacity situations (again, 2+1) configurations?

If I purchase a newer Remington 870 Express and later decide to add a magazine extension tube assembly I will need to remove the two dimples at the end of the tube before I can successfully add the extension. I know of two ways to do this. Take a hammer and a tool such as a half inch ratchet extension and gradually tap out the dimples. The second way is much easier, just drill out the dimples with the appropriate size drill bit. Obviously, the second way is much easier. My question is, are there any drawbacks to doing it the second way? Thank you, Jack
@SynchronizorVideos
@SynchronizorVideos 6 лет назад
You do end up with two holes in your mag tube, but those holes are covered up by the barrel guide ring when the gun is assembled, so no foreign matter should find its way in through them. As long as you deburr the holes properly, I think it's the method with the least likelihood of something going wrong, and it should leave the least amount of bare metal once you're done.

Are the basic 870 expresses decent shotguns? I'm curious because they tend to run really cheap when stores run holiday sales.
@SynchronizorVideos
@SynchronizorVideos 9 лет назад
+cky31695 Expresses are the same as any other 870, just with a lighter-duty finish and more basic furniture. Police and Wingmaster models are good if you want something that looks nicer and runs a little smoother out of the box, but if you just want a functional shotgun that's a good bang for the buck, the Expresses are fine. They'll take pretty much any parts from the higher-dollar models if there's something you want to upgrade (though the majority of the parts are the same to begin with), as well as all the same accessories, so you won't sacrifice any options by starting with an Express (as long as it's not one of the long-mag Express Tactical models, which can only use special barrels: www.rem870.com/forum/download/file.php?id=493). If you're interested, I wrote up the differences between similarly-equipped Express & Police 870s here: rem870.com/forum/general-discussion/different-types-of-870-s-t1328-10.html#p8431

i read somewhere that the barrel lug will come loose if a magazine retainer is not used, is that true?
@SynchronizorVideos
@SynchronizorVideos 6 лет назад
Do you mean the barrel guide ring? That isn't coming loose, it's solidly brazed to the barrel. Your magazine cap might comer loose without a retainer, but that's only if it's a newer-style internal-ratchet cap with a plastic spring retainer that locks into mag tube dimples. The press-in metal spring retainers don't do anything but hold the spring in place.

You'd also want to make some cuts to reduce the force required to compress the factory retainer. I'm sure you could do it, but the end result wouldn't be as good, and the effort involved would probably not be worth the small amount of money you'd save.

Chevy Chevelle Where have you looked so far? And have you tried calling Remington's parts department? You might not get as good a deal from them as you would from a 3rd-party seller, but if you're really set on a blued kit and you can't find one anywhere else, that may be your best bet.

I guess my guestion would be....Why don't you just drill the retention plyer holes into the original retailer? Is there room with that shelf or nose?
@SynchronizorVideos
@SynchronizorVideos 8 лет назад
+Alan Crews The Remington retainer is made of pretty brittle metal. You'd need to come up with some way to support it while drilling. It's also a lot tighter in the magazine tube than the Benelli part, so it would be harder to compress with pliers. To make it as easy to install as the Benelli retainer, you'd probably need to make some additional cuts to give it more flex. Now you've got a lot of bare metal exposed, not to mention plenty of opportunities to screw up in the process. And then it still wouldn't let you slide a magazine plug through when it's installed. Is it possible? Probably. Is worth it? Probably not, even if you have a machine shop in your garage. By the time you get it all figured out and done, you'll most likely have spent a lot more than $15 - $20 worth of time and effort, and even if you didn't screw it up, you'll have a really bubba'd part that still isn't as good as the Benelli retainer.

What about a video on solving ejection problems on 870's? I believe I have figured out how to solve the problem for myself, but a comprehensive professionally made video would surely save people some of the hassle I've had to go through thus far.
@SynchronizorVideos
@SynchronizorVideos 9 лет назад
Cail Robbins Are you talking about *ejection* problems or *extraction* problems? If it's the latter, it's really less of a gun issue than it is an ammo and user issue, as you've probably figured out for yourself. I would like to do a video addressing this topic, but there's a lot of misinformation I'd need to disprove, and a lot of actual facts I'd need to prove. To do it right (in my eyes, at least) would make for a rather involved video, and it's unfortunately not something I have the time or money to tackle at the moment. Plus, right now, I'd basically need to fake the problem since my barrels are all properly broken-in. It's definitely on my list though, for some point in the future when I'm breaking in a new barrel and have a little more of a budget for these videos.

Can we get a video about removing dimples from a magazine tube without drilling them? :)
@SynchronizorVideos
@SynchronizorVideos 9 лет назад
Trajanowski Rifleworks Probably not, I actually advocate drilling the dimples out for most folks. It is possible to swage or peen the dimples flat, but employing those methods properly takes special tools and a certain amount of know-how. For someone who isn't an experienced gunsmith, it's easy to permanently damage an 870's magazine tube or receiver assembly with those approaches. Drilling the dimples out is quick, requires no specialized tools, doesn't leave anything that can interfere with the follower or shells, and doesn't place any stress on the receiver/tube joint. And since the holes are covered up by the barrel guide ring when the gun is assembled, they're neither a structural weakness nor an ingress risk. As I understand it, drilling out the dimples is the technique endorsed by Remington, and taught to Remington-certified armorers.

Wow, knowing what I know now, can't I just drill a couple of holes in the half-dozen spring retainers I have in my ziplock container marked "870 Takeoffs"? I already have the snap ring pliars. I can grind the end off and I'm there!
@SynchronizorVideos
@SynchronizorVideos 9 лет назад
+RyeOnHam I actually had someone suggest that on my old Tips & Tricks #1 video. One issue I can imagine with the idea is that - as shown in this video - the factory spring retainer fits much tighter than the Benelli part, and is much harder to press into the tube by hand. Even with holes for pliers, it may take a lot of force to compress enough to fit into the tube. You might have to widen or notch out the center hole to make it as nice to work with as the Benelli retainer. That's just off-hand speculation, though; if you decide to give it a try, I'd like to hear how it goes. The bigger issue in my mind is that while it may well be possible to modify a factory retainer to the point that it's as good as the Benelli retainer (which has advantages beyond the lug holes, remember), it likely will not have been worth the effort by the time the modifications are finished. Even assuming proper tools & know-how, by the time your average 870 owner gets finished drilling holes and making other tweaks, they'll have probably spent more than $15 worth of time and effort. At that point, they might as well have just bought the pre-made upgrade.
@RyeOnHam
@RyeOnHam 9 лет назад
***** LOL, my time is worth MUCH less than that, so I'll try it at least. I can see your concerns, though. Would never have thought of this without your video, though. Thanks!
@SynchronizorVideos

I got this same idea after watching the video and since I had already messed up my retainer attempting to install it I went ahead and drilled two holes and filed off the center part, now I can install it with snap ring pliers and insert a 3/8" dowel through the larger hole without removing the retainer. Problem solved.
