Upgrading a SciFi Toy 

The little Lightyear fighters are Disney's sole positive contribution to the world over the last decade. I use them to litter the hangars for my 25mm Star Wars Miniatures Battles games.

Those Hyperspeed ships are fantastic for sci-fi gaming. The trucks and the Armadillo shuttle are also fun on the table.

For curved surfaces such as the canopy, you can mask them with Silly Putty. Another method for paint chips is to use water and salt crystals to cover the base coat. Tamiya makes a panel liner that is designed to highlight the recessed panel lines. Modelers use it on the panels of miitary model.

I picked up two of the Buzz Lightyear ships from the clearance rack at Walmart. Not sure how much I’m going to kit bash them. After seeing your painting maybe I’ll just throw on some paint. Thanks. I’ll post them on the crafters guild when I get around to them.

dollar tree got these REALLY NICE space ships from a video game. they sold on line for like 15$ a pice. I think these were factory failures but for table top use they are AWESOME!!! I picked up I think 20 or so. One of the best finds I ever got:)!!!!!

I picked up an absolute ton of these ships on clearance all over the place once the movie hype faded. The designs really were the best part of the whole film. My plan is to do something similar in painting and weathering them up for use as starport/hangar bay terrain for various scifi games. At some point I'll get around to it.

Wash applied from left to right/higher point to lower ones might make it appear as if the ship has been parked in one place for awhile.

In addition to using salt (I used course salt or rock salt, depending on the size), is the hairspray technique. You paint your silver then spray hairspray on it, let that dry then put your base color over it and then take a good stiff brush with water and scrub off the paint in areas, works surprisingly well.
