Hey Gang. You gave us the confidence to tackle this roof job! After fighting that flex duct in a previous video, we decided to give a vent through the roof a shot and this is the result! If you guys have any tips or tricks be sure to let us know in the comments because we're gonna be doing this again shortly on our current remodel! Couple suggestions: First, when you nail your shingles back down, make sure you're not putting a nail within 4 inches of the butt joint of the run above it. You had a few nails too close to those joints that may rust out and fail prematurely. Second: hook blades are cheap and make cutting the shingles WAY easier. Other than that it was a good clean install and a good video! Thank you for your content! You're one of the best multi-trade "handymen" I've seen on RU-vid.

We need more honest GCs like you guys. Says a lot when you see a problem like the failing pipe jack boots and instead of just going “meh not my problem” you actually do the right thing and seal it up. Integrity goes a long way in this world. Good job

Agree 👍 ☺️ many "workers" just patch in where they are able to (according to them). I had a guy who was painting a steel staircase for me. 90% of the paint was still in the can 🥫. I was like...🙄🙄 What? 😮😮 Because I knew that a whole can would be spent on that staircase volume. But the painter didn't knew. 😏😏 So I showed him with a flash light that 80% of the staircase was not done. Never hired him again. 😊 I wish the "old timer integrity" of the work would still exist but It does not - those guys are 1 in a million. I mean 😃 dad (in the video) even said, "I gonna seal it up wherever they need it or not" to prevent future natural damages on that plastic pipe. Oh those where the times ❤️ when people had some work ⚒ ethics...😊 Instead of "Naaah not my problem" attitude...:/ 😑

Hvac Tech here. Ditch those straight aviator snips you want the offset ones. Offset Jaws help keep your hand out of the metal so you don't cut the crap out of your fingers also if you make turns which might not be common for you guys get a pair or reds and greens the Jaws are revered to make it easier to turn the snips left and right.

I'd also recomend throwing a sheet metal screw in the seam of that duct. Snap lock has a tendance to bust open

@TJP 81 angle grinding doesn't get practical till about 16ga sheet metal. We typically use snips on everything below that, but there's lots of power tool options also. Portaband will cut smaller round pipe, double cuts work alright on medium to large sizes and nibbles which are only useful on flat metal

@TJP 81 Power Shears are definitely a thing and a specialty tool, but I actually prefer a "Malco TS1 Turbo Shear" which just attaches to a drill. I find that you can make a tighter corner radius and have more flexibility with maneuvering in tight spaces than with a regular power shear. The one downside for work like this is that you need two hands to operate well so you need a third hand to hold your work which you wouldn't with a regular power shear, though you can get decent at running the TS1 one-handed if you're cutting straight lines.

Not bad. Better than all the other tradesman that try to do roofing. Even some of the roofers! Lol. 3 THINGS: 1. Some already mentioned nailing too close to the seams. 2. Use cement wherever you broke the seal of the shingles. They will never sell properly again. 3. Roof cement will cause rubber to degrade over time. You would have been better of using that mastic tape, or caulking that is meant for rubber roofing. Over all: A- great job!

The feeling of coming down from an attic into an air conditioned room is top 5 feelings in the world. Even the feeling of fresh air circulating is top tier than staying up in an attic for more than 5 minutes on a hot day lol

you can usually install those vents without removing any shingles, just mark it out with chalk and cut the shingles/sheating back at the same time with sawzall, then pull any nails above in the way of flange to slide up under. you can clean the cuts up with knife if needed, but once used to installing them it's pretty easy, including plunge cutting the blade in without drilling a hole first. I hate roofing dearly and attic work also, and always go for a sidewall vent first and never soffit vent anything, unless it's the last resort. I'm far north where we freeze yearly for months on end and all that moist air would make it back into attic and mold or cause other major issues.

Just a suggestion when connecting pipes or flex tube - in AC we use 3 sheet metal screws and then tape over the screws. Mechanically secured is always best. Just FYI.

Paul. Jerry from Fresno here. You’re in my wheel house now. Super excited when I saw the intro. Ready for my thoughts 😆 First of all, as rare as it is for you to get on a roof you should know they sell mastic in caulk tubes. Cleaner and more efficient for you maybe Second tip. Any time I’m installing any type of flange on a roof I do my best to bend it a little. What that does is compress it nice and flat. Hope that makes sense. Third and perhaps most important in hurricane. It’s a good idea to put dabs of mastic on any shingles to help hold them down. The factory sticky part is lost once seal is broken Anyway. I knew you could do. Yes a bit overkill but that’s what we do when we care. Thanks for all the videos

Don't put tar on the bottom of the down slope vent flange. If you get blow-in it will prevent the water from running out without sealant the water can percolate out. Always remove or cut out shingle before using circular saw. The granules on the shingles are ceramic, they will destroy you blade rapidly. Also the comments about hook blades, angled snips (red, green), caulk gun tar for small jobs, nails away from upslope butt joints are all awesome. The small hole you noticed can be easily repaired on a dimensional roof by making a small tab from the removed material and adhearing it with some roof cement. As a roofer you are usually on top of the roof and not in the attic. However, low slope is always better to work on. Also in hurricane county they are way better at staying intact.

my experience with roofing cement is that it dries, shrinks and cracks and hence is a lousy sealant, maybe acceptable between two shingles but nowhere else. Ditto on its use to seal the vent to the underlayment or surrounding shingles. Would have been nice to show the fix for the soffit holes.

As a old roofer. To me I could not care less what was in the attic, since I worked on the roof only. However, I preferred a steeper roof. It was a lot easier on the back. Less bending. Also, at the point 14:52 Did I just see you step on that ridge flow venting??? Stay off the ridge vent. lolz

Don’t use black jack anymore. I don’t know if you can get geocell 2300 at a supply house. The tar will eat those rubber boots, so you’re gonna have to replace them all. You also need to hand seal those shingles, they won’t reseal, and the wind will pop them up.

If you install vent B4 putting the pipe, you can slide the vent under roofing and you don't have to remove any roofing material... super easy. Then, install pipe from inside the attic .. that was a tight attic though so... NICE JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They sell a Caulk tube size product of that roof sealer called “Roof Jack” and other names. But you don’t have to buy an entire gallon can of it. You’ll never use that entire thing by the time Mr SP is in the ground haha

30+ year Master HVACR tech here, may I suggest you always use a 1/4" speed or self-tapping sheet metal screws on each of your sheet metal piping joints in 3 locations around the join to give it a good mechanical connection before using your Nashua mastic foil tape, a lot of states require a mechanical connection like this. But all in all Good job Guys loved the video! :)

Knowing their work ethic, he probably admitted his mistake, told them they could do better, and ate the original cost of time & supplies. At least that's how my hubby & I did landscaping if we ever goofed up somehow. HINT: Don't ever use that biodegradable landscape fabric junk. That job will cost you a half a day's worth of work and 3 weeks later the homeowner is upset weeds are growing in the landscaping already. Then it costs you a full day of work to remove all the mulch you put down, (carefully! You just planted all new plants!), plus new materials to re-do it right "the old fashioned way".

Good video as always. Years ago in my younger days I put a new HVAC plenum, a-coil, compressor and ductwork in an addition. The previous owner never put in a duct for heat and the house had never had AC. My wife was pregnant at the time and it was the middle of July and we were having a major heatwave. Had never done HVAC before but the company I worked for at the time(a major amusement park) had their own HVAC techs and they told me how to do it. One of them came out and purged and charged the line for me... I also put a bath exhaust fan in the bathroom which did not have one originally. And ducted it through the roof and patched the roof. Luckily I was able to find roof cement in a caulk tube. I think I would still have a lot of roof cement left from a gallon can! 😊 I had replaced and repaired roofs before with my dad and grandfather as kid. Everything else was a first for me in my first house. I still remember how hot that attic was!!! I feel your pain! 😊

Great work! Notably the tape is for sealing the duct, it should have 3 screws per joint to keep them secured together.

I was one of the roofers that commented on your other video about how much easier it was to go through the roof. Super easy ! Next time use razor blades with the hook ends. They are made specifically for shingle cutting. I saw how you were struggling to cut the shingle with the straight razor blade lol.

Living here in Southeastern Louisiana I used black spray Flexseal when I replaced my bathroom-fan roofjack and sprayed that stuff 12" wide around it, let it set and came back next day and sprayed some more plus covered the entire roofjack just to be sure. I went back up 6 months later and saw no shrinkage or cracking like with typical tar products. Before I used that spray I covered all possible leak-points with clear silicone and let it set before I began my fanatical Flexseal operation. It rains way too often around here. I miss the desert where rain is a wonderful thing instead of a pest.

Great watching you complete that roof job. We don't have many shingle roof coverings here in the UK, what we do have is slate roofs, just like the one across the yard from where you were working. Welsh slate is supposed to be the best in the world, it lasts for ever.

Hey Guy, I just got up and started roofing my old 5/12 pitch roof and it has been a little scary. So I figured out that I need to move my reading glasses to the top of my head and I am much more balanced on the pitched roof. When I sit down and start working I pull the glasses back down.

Paul I could almost feel how hot that attic was with the fibreglass particles embedded in your skin and the dust blowing up every time you touch it. Coincidentally I did some wiring in my own attic today but not nearly as tight as that. I was half waiting to see you hit your head on a roofing nail poking through. Between the attic and the roof I bet you’re sore the next day. You guys deserve all of those smoothies for that one!

At 10:33 the tack nail heads s/b protected w that black roofing cement too. When ur partner brought down that top shingle, those shinny nail heads aren't covered deep behind the top shingle. So, the wind driven (needn't be strong as by Mr. Harry Cane) rain would definitely lift the top shingle n wet the nail heads. Then, the heads will rust out and disappear, then the nail shafts get the water, they'll rust out n disappear, and now, u got a lot of rain water shafting thru the sheathing.

I do roofing tear off and replace i always recommend a low pitch roof when im just reroofing its hard on the ankles that high pitch crpa but we see more of those then anything and the old rotten house where we have to replace doze s of pieces of plywood we have done rhat several times and its a pain when people let it get that damn bad

Oooh, roofing guy... 👏🙏 I have a question for you that you might be able to help me with, if you don't mind. Our shed was originally built in the early to mid 70's. Painted that awful red color & shingled. Lasted up until about... 2012. Then the back right corner of the roof started leaking. In 2016, my husband & I rebuilt the back wall, the right side wall, and the front wall (but put original doors back on it), and completely redid the roof. It's an all plywood shed with tar paper & shingles. In less than 3 years, the far right roof corner started leaking again, the floor across ⅔rds of the back wall lays wet now, especially in the spring, and it's now causing damage across the roof to the middle-back of the roof heading towards the left side. We know we need to redo the roof again, just 5 years later, and are looking at using metal roofing this time instead of shingles. Does that give you enough info to provide speculation on what we did wrong?? It's the same roofing corner that went bad, but faster this time. Was the back right corner not plumb as we thought it had been? Is the tree that towers above the shed from the left side have bad roots on the right side of the shed that's making it drop in that corner or something?? Why is the same bad corner bad again?? Both my husband & I have some home repair backgrounds with roofing and never encountered this issue before. I don't understand what went wrong. I'm trying to be proactive on figuring out how to fix this. Any suggestions are welcomed, if you don't mind.

did AC work for 5 yrs......in florida..... all year. one time i got stuck in the attic where, to the pitch there was only 12" at the peak..... mid July, after lunch with no shade on the house. only took 5 mins for my buddy to stop laughing at me before he pulled my legs while i pushed. you'd think the river of sweat would help lube me up, but naw. i feel your pain paul... but them southern attics separates the strong and stubborn from the not so go get it attitudes.

If you were doing roofing around here you'd get yanked off and issued a huge fine -- no fall protection, no helmet even! My builder friends complain a lot about all this safety gear but Quebec has about half the construction mortality rate compared to the US, so it actually works.

Shorter length is more efficient. Next time when on the roof , precut your silver HVAC tape to go around pipe diameter twice. Then go back into attic to connect Elbow with 2 to 4 pieces of precut twice as long HVAC tape. The go back up on to roof and manage your vertical length to fit thro the rubber boot, then place the hood as to not impede air flow out. That flexible stuff allows water to collect in valley & grow mold. I find working in overheated attics, I loose my ability to think in that heat. I must do my thinking before I get in there. And I cannot remain Positive for very long, so I must be careful with the people around me. You set a good example for me. Thank you 😊.

When I have installed those roof vents I just sacrifice a hole saw to the roofing material and slide it up and install the vent from below. I keep a couple of the old ones that have roofing tar all over them to use again.

You should have insulated those vent pipes. Condensation is going to form on those pipes when Temps are different from inside to attic and potentially cause mold in the attic

Agreed. I prefer to just use four inch insulated flex duct.

Do not know code where you are but in cold climate you insulate the ducting to prevent condensation. You were correct in not putting nails in the exposed part of the vent. Pain to do but better air flow.

In small attic like this with min air flow. That duct need to be insulated to reduce condensation. Also you totally sealed underneath the newly installed roof vent on all 4 sides and that a mistak. You should leave bottom side open with no seal to allow water condensation to run down if it happens. Also the new building code 2018 will not allow installing another vent within 3 ft from another.

Hello, I am a licensed GC in AZ and I can tell you from experience, for bathroom vents, flex duct is more than sufficient. This is not a criticism, I love your dedication to quality. However, sometimes two different methods can both be competent. The only qualification for a bath vent is that I try to give the ductwork a straight run to the roof vent in order allow as much air flow as possible. Regardless, this was a lot of work and you deserve credit for doing work to the level of quality you see fit.

Not sure how making another roof penetration is better than the soffit. I get you didn't like the flex pipe but avoiding a roof penetration seems like a better idea. Love your channel anyhow.

Soffit venting moisture would lead to early breakdown of the soffit since it's wood. The roofers replacing the roof before I bought my house must have thrown out the ductwork thinking - eh let's not install that vent back on the roof, make it easier for us. I replaced the original 1963 fan, put in a vent like here, and ran the insulated flexible ductwork to the vent. Everything is so much better. But I do think that this was a lot of work for not much gain.

Just did the same project on my house this weekend. Did you guys remember to put sealant on the underside of the shingles where you broke the seal? I found out that once you break the seal on the shingles, they won’t reseal and need an adhesive/sealant.

In your smoke pipe is what we call it after snapping it together squeeze seam out on air entering end and in on crimped end to help pipe stay together

I'm glad you did this. I wasn't thrilled with that flex duct. Next time you go up on a roof, get yourself a hook blade. BTW, no matter how much you choke up on that hammer, it's still a framing hammer.

You needed a Hook blade when cutting shingles that way, I know, you haven't done roofing for awhile. Smart choice, I'm almost 60 and I use to do a lot of it. Oh Boy !!!! Do I feel it now. Love your show !!! Thanks !!

You might wan to check if that the roofing tar is compatible with the rubber vent boots. A quick fix is to cut the base off a new pipe flashing boot and slip it over the top of the existing boot.

My Italian grandfather taught me way back in the day that a hammer's handle length is there for a reason. He told me always hold the hammer near the end of the handle. There is a reason different hammers have different handle lengths. Another tip for those who may be watching this video. Hand saws are a thing of the past but he told me to use all the teeth on the saw and make long strokes. I was like most amateurs would saw a million times fast back and forth using only 4" of the middle of the saw. Again...why did they make the saw so long if you only had to use 4" of it? The old craftsman knew it all because they had to. Now you don't need a saw of any kind because Google will saw it for you on a app.....:-)

It's funny in one video paul said I feel for the guys in the west coast with the sizemic activity and what they have to do while framing a house or something to that degree.... my father and I are roofers and always say man I feel for the guys In Louisiana they have to put so many nails in those dang shingles because of hurricane weather lol thought you might get a kick out of that

If you have one of those "Job Max" type interchangable-head multi-tools, they make a sheet-metal shears attachment that is an absolute *joy* to use.

Glad you guys decided to go through the roof with that vent. I didn’t make a comment about it last time but couldn’t believe you guys used flex duct and ran it the hard (long) way. I always recommend the roof since it’s a shorter run and easy to repair if there’s an issue. Quick question though: did you re-glue the shingles with the roof patch? (It wasn’t shown on video) I usually use Geocel 4500 since it cures rubberized and dispenses from a caulking gun.

Tight attic in the summertime; been there, done that. Now I wait for winter (Southern California) before I go under the roof. Summer I try to do work in the subfloor crawl space. I don’t know why attics and crawl spaces are so tight. I’ve often thought that even a low slope roof could have enough working room at the wall plates if only a short cripple wall was built around the perimeters. Maybe not to code? It was easy enough to do back when balloon walls were the standard…

GreAt vid. Did u use electro galvanized vs double hot dipped galvanized nails for the root. And how come there was no screws used to hold the vent to vertical pipe connection? If the gooie tape fails, the joint will fall apart??

A suggestion is to use a product like Loctite PL Roof and Flashing Polyurethane Sealant to glue the shingle tabs down so they won't flap in the wind. It's also good to use on the vent stacks as it will last much longer than tar.

I helped my hubby running sink plumbing a few days ago. (Love it! I'm so excited to have that sink where it's located!!) He was in a tight spot working backwards along the pipes from the finish location to start, and spilled the brand new can of ABS cement on an unfinished cement floor. WHAT A MESS!! LOL Stinky too! Let's just say that area of floor is now "permanently polished". 🤷‍♀️

I watch a lot of ur videos and like ur work, I'm a carpenter and a roofer as well and want to just point out that reusing shingles is never a good idea because it doesn't reseal properly and the old nail holes r still exposed, also u never want to put a nail withing 5 to 6 inches of where the next courses seam will be because of the way the water travels, if u pull up the shingles on the existing shingles at the seams u can see just how far the water travels on the underside of those keyways

Yep agree... To help reseal you can use Geocel 4500 roof bond sealant, few spots along shingle and nails. Doesn't deteriorate shingles like tar.

I noticed you did not wear a bump cap while in the attic. After making contact with a few roofing nails on the underside of roof decking I wear a bump cap when in an unfinished attic. Also wear the bump cap in any crawl spaces with low clearance, especially under manufactured homes. Not always comfortable, but have prevented multiple cuts and prevented other injuries.

Yeah, the flex ductwork creates air turbulence because of the spiral/flex shape, just like the accordian shape of a dishwasher drain hose,or the non-approved accordian flex sink drain pipes! These collect all the gunk in the folds and eventually clog up. Smooth is a lot better!

In a cold climate, or winter anywhere, I guess, put your roof tar/ cement near a heat source the night before. Here in Canada it's basically useless if you don't. Not hot n runny, but warmed. Cheers all

I'm not bothering going to my tight attic and climb to my roof just adding a vent . Ill do the way you do at first if if don't work or encounter the same problem maybe I vent throu the wall.😮
