Thanks for the step by step video. I'm actually aiming to update my SLA battery bank to a Lithium power wall similar to this. Yours looks very neat with the custom wire length and breakers. Mine is a 48v array and I harvest 53v at 16amps at 1.31killowatts. Small but it powers plenty. I just need a bigger storage medium. I really need to buy a Batrium monitoring system to gauge what's going through

If you’re accepting small criticisms, I would tie down those blue and red cables from the battery banks near the enclosure. If something heavy falls down and catches those cables, there’s a chance they’ll pull out of the screw clamps and make turn the inside of the shed into a pretty sparkler. (Never trust horizontal cable runs).

@@HBPowerwall Ah! So THAT'S why such low volts! Too many cells in parallel for a config with second hand cells, even with individual fused lines. Jehu Garcia seems to have a much better method of building power walls. And by the way you die MUCH more easily with DC than AC - the current never gets interrupted on DC shocks. That's probably another reason to use 48 volts though right? 192 volts DC is more my idea of getting power from multiple batteries - just like my pro Riello 6kVA UPS! I can run universal power tools or any universal motor directly off that with no conversion and ampage losses.
@HBPowerwall
@HBPowerwall 4 года назад
@@boblewis5558 Jehu's is fantasitc for small jobs, but sucks for scale - seen many more issues with his packs than are public. BUT they are VERY good for small packs don't get me wrong - my next battery is bigger again and I will be adding another 1200 cells soon to this battery. It's been in service for almost a year now and is still super strong with out any signs of issues. Going to pull it out of service and retest each pack and see how it's holding up properly.

Hey Pete. Thanks. I really appreciate your videos. I have a question or a request even. Could you elaborate, why you use a charge controller, when your inverter can charge your batteries as well (maybe you can go over that in a video???)? I have my first 7 packs ready and want to go ahead with ordering an inverter but I want to understand why you use a charge controller instead of the inverter to charge your packs. Thanks!!!
@HBPowerwall
@HBPowerwall 4 года назад
I use the MPP Solar PCM60X charger controllers cause they work! That's not an affiliated linked or sponsored comment it's the fact they really do work and stood the test of time. Its Heat... in summer it gets a touch hot over her in Aussie land so keeping head separate to the inverters is a great idea when an air-con gets left on for days and days at a time along with the normal house loads and cooking. THAT said it would be more efficient to use the internal charge controler as it's much more efficient as the PIP inverters will use solar power first so there is less energy 'inverted' so to speak. NOW this setup it's because of the limmited size of the PWM charger controller in the PIP2424HS & those fans are a touch too small for that unit.
@ILoveOpenSourceSoftware
@ILoveOpenSourceSoftware 4 года назад
@@HBPowerwall thanks for your response. So if I understand you correctly it is not necessary just recommended because of environmental conditions in Australia. Could you explain the relationship between the solar charge inverter thinking it is charging a lead chemisty and how the batrium deals with that? Does the batrium know to feed dummy voltage data back to the charge controller to get it to back off etc?
@HBPowerwall
@HBPowerwall 4 года назад
charger controller is set to 4v per cell - so 0.2v under it's max safe voltage also CCCV is turned off. Has worked for me for 4 years so far. Batrium doesn't control the inverter at all. But does take care of balance and hws, & soon the shut trip will be fitted to stop all charging & discharging if there is a high/low or hot/cold issue with the batteries. There are 18-20 temp sensors in this setup.

The thing about these small cells in a large pack is if one cell goes bad how do you find it or replace it. I am thinking it is much easier to build packs using larger cells that are now available. Building packs with hundreds of 18650 cells seems tedious and unnecessary this day and age.

Don't forget i started this process 4 years ago. 18650 cells scale perfectly from 4 cells to 40,000 cells. Anyone from any economic group can build this to suit their needs from a led light to do home work in a remote town in Africa to a whole house setup because I can in Brisbane Australia. New large scale cells come with a high price tag that limmits their ROI.. My time is spent well building these. DIY is diy for a reason.

hi! my understanding is, there is an upside of using a zillion small cells in parallel instead of larger, more expensive units. when a few of these smaller capacity cells get weaker you wouldn need to find and replace them immediately coz overall you'll lose a fraction of an amp with a few weakened cells in a pack of hundreds of them. with time when your pack's cell death rate hits double digit percentage or overall capacity becomes too low only then you may need to rebuild.

Hey from the video u said u installed 14 250watt panels on the pcm60x thats 3500watts of solar. From the pcm60x manual its 3000watt charge controller... how does it deal with the extra wattage.... also from the manual it says its a 60amp charger so if you are charging a 24v battery you would only get alittle over 1500watts charging capacity from the pcm60x therefore you are never going to get the full 3500watts from the solar panels you are only getting half. Am i correct in assuming this is so? And if so why did you set up the system this way? Could have split up the panels between the pcm60x and the pip and you would get closer to the 3000watts charging power....
@HBPowerwall
@HBPowerwall 4 года назад
We have since moved some solar over to the pip inverter but all the panels lay flat on the roof and there is massive shading during winter

What was the max the pcm60x was giving you when you had the 3500watts connected? I am looking to do almost the same setup and was wondering if the pip and the pcm60x could handle 1620watts each... on a 24v setup

8:03 What is the purpose of the shunt and how is it being monitored if the input to the shunt only goes from the solar controller straight to the inverter and nowhere else? Isn't the purpose of the shunt to be able to measure battery charging current? This means you'd need to measure the voltage across the shunt itself, right? Is there a wire I can't see or am I missing something?
@HBPowerwall
@HBPowerwall 3 года назад
The shunt is for the Batrium BMS, takes care of all the SOC of the battery between solar, battery, inverter .
@jtveg
@jtveg 3 года назад
@@HBPowerwall Yes but it can't physically do that unless there are wires on each side of the shunt going to the BMS. Where are they, especially the wires on the left side of the shunt. I can only see the thick wires going from solar to inverter. There is no wire going to BMS.

Why you use PCM60X and 24v MPPSolar (this one also has a built-in charger??) ?
@HBPowerwall
@HBPowerwall 4 года назад
It does, but was very low input from memory, PCM60X is an outstanding unit and that PIP2424HS over heated with just a 2000w load for 10 min, ad an SCC to the mix and it renders the inverter useless. NOW that i never used the internal charger that inverter is still running today.. Must be something to my thinking
