Just finished an X58 build tonight! Running the X58 Sabertooth, an X5660 and two GTX 580’s in SLI. I see these retro build videos sometimes get knocked, but it’s almost always because they aren’t running software from the era that the components were from. Games from 2008/2013 run like a dream, especially the ones that are optimized well for SLI configs. For me, it’s the stuff that I couldn’t afford when it came out, playing the games I played at resolutions and details I never dreamed of at the time. Thanks for the video and keeping this hardware alive and well!
X58 is still surprisingly capable. My 2nd rig has a P6X58D-E, X5675 @ 4.5GHz, 32GB (2x8GB + 4x4GB) RAM & R9 290X, still runs games better than many would except.
I thought i was th eonly to still operate using R9 270x gpus lol. i love em, i have 2 left i did have 4 , i have 1 DualX 270x and a Sapphire 270X on my Sabertooth 2.0 board and still using an FX 9590 lol and 32gb ram im still able to play alot with this setup
Recently dug out my old x58 build to see how well it holds up in newer games. Its running an Asus Sabertooth X58, 24GB ram, x5675 clocked at 4.6ghz and a 6600XT... Holds up surprisingly well, im tempted to see how it'd do with my 7900XTX thats in my main PC but then I'd have to also swap the PSU.
Really like the x58 platform, been my daily driver for so long. Now its the backup pc for testing. Got the asus p6t ws pro, W3690 @ 4.32ghz, Noctua nh-d14, 20gb kingston blue hyperX in a alu liam li case and a gtx 680. Used it till last year with a gtx 1070 but it did hold back the gpu a fair bit.
I was running x58 from 09 - 21. It ended up going through a few changes over the years and ended up a x5675 @ 4ghz with a 1070. Before the 1070 I had a 980. The 1070 was a huge improvement over the 980. I'd like to do some testing to see if the cpu could bottleneck the GPU.
@@idoesstuff1 The gtx 1070 with w3690 gave a passmark score of 12800. With a i5 12600kf oc it jumped up to 18900 and the same difference is found in games. There is much more room for eye candy now.
I have a secondary PC with X58 that I use for gaming on my CRT! Has an MSI XPower Big Bang motherboard, 24GB DDR3 ~ 1600 mhz, a W3680 CPU, and a MSI Lightning GTX 980 Ti. Quite the power hog at full load, but I don't play very intensive games on it. Unfortunately the motherboard isn't that great at overclocking, it can barely do 4.4 so I just keep it around 4.2 stable. Most Asus boards are better but im keeping the MSI board since its such a cool design and pretty uncommon
i use a hyper 212 with my i7 980x it does ok , i do use a push pull fan config on the cooler though plus i don't overclock it aggressively , i settled for 4 GHZ
Really, because of the age of ddr3, find the most matched ram you can find that is the fastest the CPU supports. A lot of lga 1366 CPUs only officially supports 1066 or 1333.
if its had being me i had remove that usb 3.1 card and put the nvme disk there instead and then go for the other 1070 also but i dont know if it vas space after you removed that card
At least it's not as bad as with Phenom II X6 which lacks SSE4.1 and SSE4.2 There is still many new games which don't require AVX so they run fine on X58, but annoyingly the required instruction sets are almost never listed in system requirements. Though some games are starting to require even AVX2 which was first added on Intel 4th gen in 2013 (Haswell) and AMD Zen1 in 2017
@IDoes Stuff I did the same several years ago with a P6T that I'd built in 2010. Running an x5670 now, but has slowed down. Just got a Sabertooth with a 960. Tested it, upgraded the bios, then added an x5680 and good cooler. Got bios message: New cpu. enter bios to change settings. Then it shut down. Tried twice more, but it shut down before even getting to the bios. I have no idea what is wrong. Will check to make sure I got the thermal paste applied well, and maybe remove all but one or two ram sticks. Any ideas? Anyone?
I would remove the cpu and check the cpu socket for bent pins, look over the mb for faults like bulging caps. Ensure that you installed the cooler correctly as this does sound like a thermal issue. If the problem persists then put the 960 back in and see if that fixes it. If it doesn't then remove everything from the case. Put the motherboard on a box or something non conductive and then remove everything not needed to get into the bios. 1 stick of ram, a simple video card, remove your storage drives, cd drive, expansion cards, fans, etc. And if it still has problems try a different power supply. Hope you figure it out.
@@idoesstuff1 Can't believe what I did!! I have a Chinese Vetroo cooler that has mounting brackets that attach solidly, which is great--if you attach them properly. The way I had them, there was no cpu contact. The paste was untouched. Hilarious!! Before I even rebooted, I came over here to delete my post which I also posted elsewhere. You beat me to it. I'll check back with some before after benchmarks! A question, tho. My board has USB 3 on the I/O, but the speeds aren't as they should be for USB 3... And the Sata 3 ports don't work at all. I do know that the Marvell controller is bunk... but drives in either of those ports are not recognized at all. Either in IDE or AHCI....I also have an NVMe PCIe adaptor that does work. There's been an impressive effort to make these drives bootable... I might try that..if I'm tech savvy enough Info is here www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/2022-x58-1366-pin-motherboards-nvme-m-2-ssd-bios-mod-collection.299867/page-17
@@rbtree you may need to enable the sata ports through the bios. Also for usb 3.0 transfer speeds you have to install the usb 3.0 drivers in windows. However I rarely see advertised usb 3.0 transfer speeds on any devices. Faster than 2.0 at about 45mbs.
i have the same motherboard asus p6t deluxe v2 my bios always reset when i boot, i changed the cell but same issue , when i save the bios it shows chassis intruded error , the jumpers are on the correct location , i can get into windows because of the bios reset but i cant restart it, do u know about this issue?
The only thing I can guess is that the bios battery may not be installed correctly. Make sure it's seated correctly with the positive (+) side up. Other than that you could update or reflash the bios in Windows. Remember that updating the bios is risky. The chip is replaceable on these I believe though so it's not too risky.
I like this guy. hes wholesome. I would get a better psu though. thermaltake psus kinda bad on the voltage regulation and overclocking, which imo is necessary for x58.
