Thank you so much for posting this. I just bought this computer for my son and followed this video to add 8GB RAM and a 500GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD. Everything is working beautifully. Your instructions made it so easy. I'm very grateful.
I added 8GB back when I bought it in 2016. I will add an SSD now as slow loading times are becoming lot more obvious in 2021. But its real hard to find M2 SATA SSD in my country other than off brands like Hikvision etc.
I upgraded mine with 860 Evo sata m.2 1TB and the RAM used in video. Works like a brand new computer. And can actually run pc games smoothly. I almost bought a new laptop but glad I spent $140 for these upgrades. Highly recommend.
I would also love to see a video of you replacing the WiFi card, I would love to upgrade mine but I feel anxious to do it without seeing it done on this laptop.
+Jan Wiśniowolski would this be the wifi card to upgrade to? www.amazon.ca/Intel-7265NGW-Wireless-Bluetooth-Interface/dp/B00TKO47XI/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1454376850&sr=8-1-fkmr0&keywords=Intel+Dual+Band+Wireless-AC+8260+%288260NGW%29+NGFF+Wwifi+Card+867Mbps+2.4%2F5GHz+Only+work+on+Microsoft+Windows+10 i seem to be having trouble finding the right one
Does the migration software only move the system files to the new SSD drive? What about existing data files? Won't they be blown away when re-formatting the D-Drive? How does one preserve existing data files? Thanks.
If you want to recover ALL of the partition space, including the hidden ones that Windows creates, you'll need to use the "clean" command in the Admin prompt. It's worth doing.
Thanks, a useful vid. Some comments... 1) Should always use ESD earthing strap on your wrist before touching electronics. 2) Should unplug laptop battery whilst installing new components? 3) You have a 1TB C: drive but had less than 250GB of data to transfer to the 250GB SSD. If you have more data on C: than the SSD the Samsung s/w does permit you to spec which user files are excluded from the transfer.
A question about this: I've had this laptop for over 2 years and it's awesome! If I was to install a 250GB SSD now, I wouldn't format the stock 1TB HDD/SSD "Hybrid" drive (I don,t wanna lose my audio files!!). Would I be at any disadvantage by not doing that last formatting step? Thank you!
Did it work fine the ssd?!? Have the same laptop but i bought the samsung 960 evo and it didnt recongize did everything even with the bios. Now i order 850 hope it works
I did the sata 3 ssd upgrade from the hdd. that was pretty easy to do once I pryed the hdd out of that machine. I had to do a clean install of Windows 10 though. I had a real hard time with the RAM upgrade though and at the end, I couldn't install it. Anyways, that process was fun doing last night. back to work and making my real content. I'll have a video of that later. I lost the Microsoft Store warranty though for doing that mod. but I think that laptop will last longer than 2 years anyways.
Question: Im about to buy this laptop and do the same upgrades. Do the heavy-load programs like photoshop need to be saved on the ssd in order to run faster? Is it necessary to put media files and games on the ssd or is the hdd good for that? Thank you!
So after I upgrade the ssd m2 so where will I install my games? on the hdd or on the ssd? anyone know how they will work? please give me some links or explains. thank you.
I bought this laptop 6 years ago and now I'm planning on upgrading so I can keep using it. Everything takes forever to load. What parts would you recommend today?
Rishabh Patel Can someone please help me I kind of dented the part where the fan is so when the fan spins it hits the top and makes a noise please help
Would not recommend formatting the HDD unless you have a complete backup somewhere, I had an SSD fail on me, and the only reason I didn't brick the laptop was because my HDD was still capable of being used as a boot drive. SSD failures are rare, but they do happen, and they rarely give any warning, so if you do insist on formatting the HDD, make sure you have that full boot drive backup first
Had to format and bring online new drive manually--Samsung Magician doesn't do that and displays No volume found. After I get drive setup so volume displays, the run Data Migration, it no longer sees the new drive. Frustrating.
Excellent video. Learned a lot. Thanks! Just a question from a non-technical person. You mentioned that it is recommended that you make the default save location the 1TB hard drive. This makes sense since your SSD may reach its maximum capacity sooner that you'd need. However, we still have to make sure that programs you want to load fast like Photoshop or Premier is installed in the SSD drive so that it will load faster, is this correct? Also, is the 250 SSD Enough to contain the System Files, Photoshop and Premier? Hope someone can help out.
Great video, very helpful. Decided to buy an added on a SSD as recommended (went 512GB) what a difference! Start up went from 50 sec to 14 sec. Ram is due to arrive this week and I'm sure that will only help though don't have any memory issues as is.
I just ordered one because I noticed it was the only thing that couldn't be upgraded. I got the i7 model with the exact same specs off of amazon for 850. It doesn't come with the ssd or a different screen. I'm assuming it wasn't a waste I think?
Hello! My laptop is Inspiron 15 of 5000 series. I really want to add an SSD and another RAM to it. You mentioned that the 8 GB RAM is just 34 dollars. But when I check the Amazon it appears to be 79$. Why? I'm in Canada BTW.
Hello. Thank you very much for this video, it makes my life a bit easier now, however few things are still unclear to me. Like the maximum size of GB. I have found official maximum size tested by Dell with 128GB. My question is, will even 500GB SSD work on this? I have asked Dell and they respond was only that this hasn`t been tested yet and it might caused the issues. The other thing is, is there any other option that Samsung Evo? Understand the value, however the price is quire high in Europe, so If there is any equivalent to this, would be awesome to know. Anyway I appreciate the Samsung migration software. Also the size of SSD is a questionable. Most of the SSd used in this Dell are 2280, but I have found few responses when peoples were trying to use 2242 which based on the look is quite different in size. Thank you in advance for help and comments
You can find that in the specifications manual for your particular dell model the maximum ssd size supported is mentioned there.Keep in mind dat Dell computers / laptops have a recovery partition and if you do purchase a samsung ssd you will have to use something other then samsung migration software since this software does not copy recovery partitions. If you want another ssd brand then samsung try crucial eu.crucial.com if you are in Europe .
I've just upgraded my dell 7559 with two 8 GB Crucial RAM and a Samsung EVO 860 1 TB SSD with the instructions in the video and everything worked perfectly! Thank you!
Hey everyone, just an FYI i purchased this laptop. Tried to install the 256gb M.2 SSD samsung 950 pro. Laptop does not register it. Dell is sure their laptop reads PCIe. Whilst in contact with them they told me it was only because it only supports a 128gb ssd in the M.2 slot. This is clearly BS since he has one working with 250gb. Also they say it will only run 1600MHz RAM my 2100MHz comes soon so i will see if that works. More to come. I will let you know if i can get it to work.
As an FYI-Costco has the I7 (non-touch) version of this laptop with 16GB of memory already installed, for less than $800. I bought the 850EVO SSD that's shown here and did everything suggested on the video. Total time including registering the new computer was 20 minutes. Best thing about buying from Costco? Free support if needed (I didn't as this is really easy to do)-and 2 years warranty instead of 1 year. Also, if you use your Costco VISA, you get an additional 2 years on the warranty. Now it's back in the box and ready for my daughter for her big Christmas present :)
Hi, i have the same model of this particular laptop, if the cloning to m.2 succeeded, do i still need to manually go in the bios setting and change the boot priority myself? Thanks.
+DragonRebound '-' it's not that I rly need it it's just that this is probably the cheapest and effective way to upgrade this laptop and I don't have extra time to spend searching through google so ya. But thx for replying to me
I have a (7559) with the Intel I7 6th gen processor and a 1tb SSHD (solid state hybrid drive) yet I also put another 8 gb stick of ram and also a Samsung 500gb SSD $130 from Samsung stick in for OS only. I agree the 3165 wifi card is a piece of crap. It is a 1x1 . Go with the 8260 it is a 2x2 and is so much faster and a lot more stable connection. I run at 264 gigabits a sec download and upload is 35 gbits a second and my ping went from around 30 to 35 to 20 which is excellent. Can't go wrong with wifi upgrade which takes 5 mins to change and cost me $29 at Office depot.
$30 for an extra 8GB of RAM won't break the bank, I can assure you. Even if you have a PC that supports up to 32GB of RAM it is still relatively inexpensive to upgrade to that amount from the traditional 8GB.
If 30 bucks more will break your bank you probably shouldn't be purchasing a $700+ laptop. So please shut up. Also Ram is not only for gaming, some people do light video editing and other processes that require more ram. $30 is nice for a little bump. Don't be stupid
I can confirm 860 evo m.2 works well with this laptop. I just installed it and my dell recognized it ok. Samsung Data Migration tool worked well and easily transferred my system to the new storage.
Hey my friend, if you wouldn't mind helping a disabled dad impress his son; We're getting an error message when we open his new Oculus Quest 2 app that his system's graphics card is incompatible (it isn't). Should I add more memory? What was the 2nd item you add here? Thanks much
+Nizar Helmi Yeah, there is M.2 PCIe, and the more common M.2 SATA this Dell uses. Very confusing because you see "M.2" and assume everything is compatible, but they didn't make it that simple. :)
mine came with a 256gb ssd m.2 already installed and i want to add a hard drive to store my games. Which is better? An SSHD or HDD? Does 7200 rpm drives drain the battery faster compared to 5400 rpm? Do they heat up more because of the faster rotation speed? I'm looking to get a seagate 2tb 5400rpm, anyone have experience with it?
+Angel .O I'm sorry i cant help but please can you help me, how much space does the os system takes because i want to buy 128Gb ssd will it be enough ? im so sorry i cant help you but help me please.
+Frost Gamer Well i'm not exactly sure. When i check my storage, it says that the system and reserved takes up 48.3gb. Of that 48.3 gigs, 37.3gb is used for system files. So i would say around 48.4 just to be on the safe over-estimate side. Honestly, i don't know much about the OS size so you might want to look more into it.
I have the same computer. Can I use the SATA III Internal memory as a main disk? I mean if I can boot from there as a principal OS disk with windows. Thank you
i’ve been trying to do something about this laptop for a while and this is exactly what i needed. it’s a pretty slow computer but i think with these upgrades it should be a lot better. thanks man
Any updates on how well this worked? I’m definitely thinking about upgrading to a total of 16GB RAM. It is a great computer but running multiple programs is just so slow these days.
i have a question. does the migration software clone the recovery partition as well because my dell 7559 came with windows 10 pre installed on the system. is there anything i should be carefull about?
I just bought the i7 version it's still in transit but i wanna know if can i do this with the i7 version? can i do all this before i even turn it on for the first time? do i have to back up the laptop before i start?
*I just bought the i7 version it's still in transit but i wanna know if can i do this with the i7 version?* is this your first time buying a gaming laptop? mine is still in transit as well XD. To put it simply, yes you can, it doesnt really matter what CPU you have, i3,i5,i7 etc. you are able to upgrade your RAM, SSD and hard drive regardless. *can i do all this before i even turn it on for the first time?* yes you can, however, i recommend booting up the laptop for the first time so the pc can install the hard ware and software available, once you have everything setup, shut down then upgrade *do i have to back up the laptop before i start?* ummm no, you dont need to, you're just upgrading hardware, you're making it better, not ruining it XD
Hi, my 7559 didn't come with an hdd, and when I tried to replace my old ssd(sandisk z400s m.2 2280 256 gb) with the Samsung 850 Evo m.2 it gives me an error while booting it up. I click continue and it says no bootable device! If you could help that would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
hi. is there an m.2 maximum ssd size? -- I cannot find anything in the dell pdfs for this machine. Also, what happens to the recovery partition on the original drive? it still there, and usable? Also, is there a difference between Samsung 950, 860, 850, etc. SSD? THANKS!
Guys. I need help on How to upgrade my Inspiron 7559 to SSD M2 Sata 2280. Dell says I can only have 250GB for maximum upgrade, but I would like to know if anyone is already upgrading to a larger capacity, like 1TB for any manufacturer
just got this laptop for $699 with a $70 dell gift card included. hell of a deal , it was $250 off on there website... I plan on adding a 250-500 gb m.2 Samsung ssd and 8gbs ram right away. Best performance per dollar for a mid level gaming laptop
Hi, I’ve a stupid question that annoy me really wrong. My OS is installed in my current 120GB SSD. I’m planning to upgrade it to 500GB. Can I know what should I do to migrate the OS from old SSD to a new SSD?
Why did y'all stop doing these videos I finally found this after an hour of research trying to put a 970 Evo plus into my M15 Alienware!! I couldn't figure out what to do after I put it in. I downloaded the Samsung magician and that was a joke just confused me then I researched disk management and initialized it but it still wasn't showing up in my file explorer. After watching this I am now using Samsung migration hoping it works.
Hi there , just upgraded my dell 7559 hdd with a WD 240GB Green SATA III M.2 Internal SSD. But what i have noticed is that fans are turning faster and louder. something wrong? are is it normal? help please..
Is it possible to upgrade the HDD of the Inspiron 17 5500, CORE i7, 16 GB RAM, to a samsung 950 PRO NVMe M.2 SSD ? Thanks a lot in advance, on any tip I can get on this.
It took me like 6 different tutorials to manage it but I finally did it. New M.2 and full upgrade of the Ram. You give me the last piece of info about changing the default Storage location. Thank you.
If I installed the same samsung ssd, but with 500gb, do I still need to format the hdd and change my save locations to the now D drive which is the hdd? Accessing my saved files would just be faster if I'm solely using the ssd as my C drive, right? Please help, I'm really considering this rather than spending the same price for a macbook air and I'm fairly new to computer customizations.
Hi, as the 850 is not available, will this one work? SAMSUNG 860 EVO SSD 250GB - M.2 SATA Internal Solid State Drive with V-NAND Technology (MZ-N6E250BW). Thanks
Hi i have same but 5577 and i have 8 GB RAM with 1 TB storage but i want to make higer performance for my work so how much GBs RAm we can add or limit ? And thank you for this informative video really nice.😊
I've been looking for ages but I can never find the 8 gab of DDR3L ram it's never the right one. It says it's for mac. Are they all the same? can it be a different kind of DDR3L ram or does have to be the exact same ram as the one already in the laptop. I have the same laptop by the way. Just want to know which ram to get before I waste my money. Someone pls help
Can't find a 850 series M.2 SSD, don't have enough money for another laptop, so what other SSDs will work? Ran into a lot of forums that showed people with problems.
Is there anyone who tried to install ddr3 with 2133MHz on this laptop? For example this memory: www.amazon.com/Corsair-Vengeance-Performance-2133MHz-CMSX16GX3M2B2133C11/dp/B00H33JU3K
My Inspiron is a newer model. It came with a 128gb ssd drive and a 1tb hdd drive. I need to upgrade the ssd drive to a 256gb ssd. How can I transfer the data since the OP system is on the drive I'm replacing?
in my laptop already 128gb SSD is there, can i upgrade that to 500gb SSD?? because that 128gb SSD is C drive and OS installed in that, please help me out
My HDD is pretty maxed out and I can’t move any to the ssd because Samsung migration from exclude some files to the point it’s 400 gigs over capacity. What do i do
Hey buddy, I am from India, and I enquired dell team about whether I can upgrade to 256GB ssd for the i5 touchless 7559 model, they said there's room only for 128GB.. :( ..can you clarify, why the restricted space? also is 128GB enough (usable 110GB) for fast booting and Photoshop, illustrator etc programs? a game or two may be
what? you can upgrade it more than 128gb, dont listen to dell, they cant see what your hardware looks like nor do they know what you're trying to ask, you can upgrade it max to 500gb, the SSD isnt restricted, just make sure the SSD is a M.2 SATA drive
This is a stupid question but i have the inspiron 15 7000 If i buy an ssd card from samsung like the one you have or better will it upgrade my ffps for games?
