In this video, I take the frankly ancient Triang (now Hornby) clerestory coaches and give them a 'free' make over to keep myself busy during the lockdown.

I too, bought two, in the 1960s when any fairly realistic carriage was rare. This century I converted them to the 7 compartment Diagram C12 of 1897 and the brake version D21 ( long brake and four 3rd class compartments). I substituted Hornby (mock) Dean suspended bogies which were an unpleasant nylon plastic to widen as I was fitting Gibson EM axles. They were painted all-over GWR wartime brown with offset GWR crest.

Nice work! I used two to create a 2-car LSWR set - 42' + 45' brakes - a lot of razor saw work - new, non-clerestory [usually pronounced clear-story BTW] roof - SR green one side, BR crimson the other! Very versatile carriages - noted the bracelet - WWJ have done with these carriages? 😉

Hi Scooby. I’m sure that it's somewhere on the GWR website that a modeller converted an 8 compartment Triang non-corridor Clerestory Coach into a 9 compartment coach. It was a while ago that I spotted the article but what he did was to cut off the end of one of his coaches, then cut off the end of a donor coach but with one compartment attached. He then 'smoothed' down the ends and joined them together to make a 9 compartment Clerestory Coach (or, as they say in the 'hooky' side of the car trade, 'cut & shut'). I know it's a bit late now as you must have finished your upgrading, but I thought I'd point it out anyway. 👍 Paul.

Sorry, I meant to say a 7 compartment coach was converted into an 8 compartment.

That was interesting and entertaining, might be lockdown but I've got 8, would die of old age before I had that patience, well done. Glynn

Thanks for watching! I've found that once starting a couple in a go and setting up a bit of a production line and you can speed through a number of the steps. I've got another 4 to go!

Thanks for this video. I have lined up a rake to be super detailed. Once you got the centre screw out, how on earth did you get the roof off? There doesn't appear to be any slack in the end clips. Please can you share the secret? Many thanks.

Hey! Thanks for watching! Most of mine came straight off (either due to damage at the ends or there just being enough slack) however one of them I did have to use some screwdrivers/levers to pull the end of the coach away just enough to slip the roof away. Hope this helps!

Great work! I’ve got a bunch of these but they’re really old and have through-axel bogies on them (yuck) did you try putting brass bearings in any like that?
@SteamWithaScooby
@SteamWithaScooby 4 года назад
I can't say I have, as all mine are the slightly later ones with plastic pinpoint bearings. However I could imagine that just drilling it out to fit the bearings and then filing the backside of the hole with some filler and painting afterwards.

Very inspiring but can you tell me how you painted the door handles so finely? Many thanks Gary

Hi Gary, with the door handles I got my paintbrush with plenty of paint on, then using the side of brush I carefully dragged it across the raised detail. With these being such old crude models it made it quite a bit easier to manage!

Hi Gary. Another alternative is to use a wooden tooth pick, a pack of which are cheap enough to buy. The advantage with them is that you can get the paint on and into delicate places without the brush hairs springing into unwanted action. Paul. 👍
