the whole 2000s in fact (the whole XP/Vista era including tabletpcs, umpcs, media centers, slideshow, plus the old iMacs with iLife) The 2000s had some unmatched creativity in PCs, only surface did some unique stuff in the 2010s, I have hopes for the 2020s (book computers are so futuristic I want them to be the next big thing)

Yeah, honestly new designs are all too bland for my tastes. If we could have something in-between early 2000s and now... (like.... late 200s - early 2010s...). I can't even really say it's consumers that choose it, if they just get something new shoved on their face, they associate new with good all around, then all others copy around anyone (doesn't matter who starts, they all just follow), no other options and then new trends are born

I have a Profile 6 as my... garage computer - the bulkier model in the bottom right of your pic of all the Profile computers. Yes, I have a garage computer. I lucked out and got one with a recent enough revision to be able to accept CORE 2 DUOs, though only up to the 6000 range. I think it has an E6300 right now? Also upgraded to an 8600gt - yes, you can use "full size" graphics cards, as long as they aren't too long, via the PCI-E 90-degree riser card. Anyhow, its purpose is to play music and youtube videos while I work in the garage, and to be there when I get stuck on a project and need to do more research, such as when I did the timing belt on my car for the first time and accidentally got one of the camshafts out of time. Woops! I've come to appreciate its weirdness, and how oddly upgradeable it is for such a small form factor. I think these are seriously overlooked as XP retro gaming boxes, and are still usable today with a modern OS if you can get a core 2 duo to work.

Computers that are ugly are like streets or tools that are ugly: you are missing the point if you think a tool is supposed to be beautiful. Like a semi truck, being beautiful is a pretty dumb thing, as in the case of imacs all in one, it gives you subpar performance, as the cooling is inadequate, due to the constrained space. Would anyone claim a bejeweled hammer drives in nails better? ;-)

One other odd note about the Profile 6 - it has an internal power supply, but not all of the power supply is actually in the enclosure. The unit itself only makes 12v and connects to the motherboard via a proprietary 10-pin connector. Then, there's more voltage conversion to create the 5v and 3.3v rails ON THE MOTHERBOARD, and a connector comes out of the motherboard to provide the molex and SATA connectors. Such a weird setup but it allowed them to have a very compact, enclosed PSU. That also means that, if you hacked off the connector, you could probably run the Profile 6, and the Profile 5.5 for that matter, off of a car battery.

Honestly that thing looks fine. Certainly slicker than (but not as cool as) the Ipex AllStationX systems that were popular here in Australia in schools and such around the same time that this computer was current. It was a "modular" AIO where you would install your own monitor on the inbuilt VESA mount, it used a standard mATX motherboard, desktop drives and you could even add video cards and such if you were daring. It didn't take up much more space (about an inch and change deeper) than this Profile and was half the starting price including a monitor.

I used to have a profile 6. It was a good computer for back in the day. Personally, I loved the way it looked. Also, the profile 6 was a much better design than the 5 in my opinion, it used desktop parts instead of laptop parts which made it bigger but much easier to work on and upgrade. You could put it a full sized graphics card if you wanted to as it had a pcie slot with two openings in the back. It was really cool the way they fit it all in there. I loved that thing and I would probably still use it today if I had a way of upgrading the CPU. It used a standard desktop CPU, mine had a core 2 duo in it, but I used a specially designed motherboard.

I can't even count the number of times I've installed XP. (Do numbers even go that high?) Never once did it play music during the install, even when its sound driver was properly installed after setup was complete. Did you install as an upgrade? I haven't done an upgrade since it took me two days to work through issues going from 3.1 to 95, but have instead only ever done clean installs. Could this be why?

I love the fact that Gateway considered enough to give you a VGA and Audio Input so that you can use machine as both its own display and use the display and speakers for another machine. I wish all all-in-ones had this feature.

Maybe the early Pentium Ds would work on this machine? They are basically 2 Pentium 4s glued to each other in one Processor Package. Also Holy F, Congrats to 100K Subs, didn't even notice. I thought you still had like 10K.

Honestly. That's probably the best looking 2000 PC I've ever seen. Aside of iMac for sure.

There was a card slot inside where you can actually add a wifi card instead of using a USB adapter. I drill holes on the silver circles on either side of the case and attached two antennas to it. Those were the days.

It makes me think of building a custom case for mounting to the back of my own screen. Use those wall mounts for something, and get the case off the dusty floor!

I have a Profile 6 that we use in our lab/work area(namely for coding and programming our MCU and FPGA logic), pretty neat little machine but I personally can't wait to replace it with a smaller laptop or something that uses less space on our benches.
