Upgrading to an X3 transmission in my Canam Defender

The upgrades from a defender transmission to an X3 transmission is gear to gear reverse no reverse chain to deal with also, no turf mode as well as getting to use larger inner axle cups, so you have less chance of breaking them. I sent the X3 transmission to Turner to get a 25% gear reduction in it, which was as high percent gear reduction as they could get it or I would’ve gotten it higher. They went through this used X3 transmission as well. That way I knew that I didn’t buy a junk transmission. I bought this one used out of Florida from a wrecked 2019 X3. My Defender is a 2020 so that was right when they change the gear angle sensor to the magnetic one opposed to the actual position sensor. So if you find a transmission the exact same year model as your bike, you won’t have to deal with the sensor issue that I had. If you do buy one year 19 or down, then you have to buy this sensor and here is the part#420666850. If you buy a 20 or up year model, then you have to buy this sensor and here is the part#420265122. I’m almost positive every year X3 transmission will fit in any year defender. Hope this helps everyone that has ever had issues with their Defender transmission. I know you can just get your stock transmission built but by the time I was getting my decked out just like how this X3 was I was gonna end up paying $2000 more dollars so I thought this was a good route. Hopefully everyone finds this helpful. Thanks to JayWhipz for providing us with rock light and whips.

When you did your swap, did you have a dowel pin in between the engine & trans? On the top passenger side? I think you’re calling it a guide pin. I ruined mine, I can’t find a replacement, and having trouble understanding why it’s important. Any thoughts?

It’s just to help it align. But if you don’t get it straight without the pin you could have 4wd actuating issues with the collar aligning with the thru shaft
