I couldn’t tell the difference in the clear coats but I really don’t expect to see a very precise amount of detail watching on an old phone , but I see enough to gain a good idea ,and I think you do very well thought out subject matter, and in my case most of your content is very relevant to me so I’ve become quite a fan of your work ....awesome stuff !!!

Thanks, much appreciated, yes, it's difficult to capture it even afterwards on a 4k camera, I have no one to please only you guys so i just give you my honest opinion, in the case of this video the finish way really very good from the gun and even after 7 days you couldn't tell any difference between the clears, they both stand up well to the elements so i don't think one is above the other. What isn't so apparent on camera is how much easier the better quality one is to spray, it is much more forgiving, cheers 👍

@@peteshobbies5383 that surprised me the most, I was under the belief that once a clear is mixed the rest falls onto the gun and skills of the painter to deliver, I’m going to try some different clears now to understand a bit more of what you mean there, and one question if you don’t mind , in your opinion which gun would you prefer for clear , that DV1 or the WS400 ?
@peteshobbies5383
@peteshobbies5383 3 года назад
Yes, the better one's flow much smoother, suffer less from runs and solvent pop if over applied, I've never used the really expensive one's because it's only for enjoyment, I don't do it for a living so can take time, do again if necessary etc, but i can see why the pros would use good stuff because in the long run it's cheaper because much fewer problems. I would definitely pick the DV1 , the WS has a slightly bigger fan and can be a bit temperamental, having said that, i use two settings on the WS that seam to work, 2 1/4 out on fan, full fluid for a flat finish with HS clears and 3 out on fluid and 3 out on fan for for a Japanese finish, great looking gun through 👍

The shine looked the same credit the painter and gun but the more expensive clear did have more depth look to it. Over time is when the difference will really show itself. Well done P.H.

Hi Patrick, thank you, Yes, you are correct time will tell although I've used the Upol for a fair few years and it holds up very well, same with the Max, it was really interesting to spray them side by side because i would have put good money on the Max keeping it's initial shine over the Upol as when I've used them independently I always think the Max has a better shine. What doesn't show is how much easier the better quality one is to spray, you can load it more without runs or solvent pop and its generally more forgiving, doesn't show in the video because I'm used to using the Upol, appreciate the comments 👍

I've only used the DV1 clear gun 3 or 4 times but I felt right at home with it as soon as I pulled the trigger for the first time, IMO it gives me a better finish than my GTI ProLite with the T110 cap. I think that most people that don't like this gun are fast professional painters as I do agree it is slower than my GTI but I'm not a fast painter so it suits me a treat, oh and BTW I hate marmite 🤢😂 The Upol is a great clear for the price, other budget clears I like is the Multi-Mix MS and the Final Systems HS clear but the best clear I've found for the money is the Octoral C401 which is a new reformulated version of the C400, the C401 lays down great and flows out to a glass like finish. If you want a good high end clear my go to is the Roberlo Kronox 610 fantastic clear.
@peteshobbies5383
@peteshobbies5383 3 года назад
Yes, i would agree 100%, on the fast professionals bit not the Marmite😂, you can understand it if you have a lot to do i guess but for me the DV1 gives a great finish, I do notice it uses more air or certainly seems to compared to TE20 cap although Devilbiss say it uses less, bit like Diesel emissions i guess, you can make it what you like! Appreciate the clear recommendations, I have some Mipa CX4 to try but haven't got round to it yet, a kit lasts me a wile for what i do
@JohnWD40TC02
@JohnWD40TC02 3 года назад
I've heard the CX4 is a good clear but haven't tried it, I got a 7.5L kit of the Roberlo 610 over a year ago now and it's just under half full, I break it out now and then if I feel like a good finish. Yes agree the DV1 gives a great finish and is ideal for what I do and isn't a hose pipe that I have to chase around the panel, also love the DV1S it's a great gun and is more than capable of doing full panels plus it has a better fan pattern than the SRI.

Just finished clear coating my motorbike frame. Upol clear with fast hardener,ani150 mini 1.3 tip, full fluid and fan, 2.3 bar. Went on smooth, but when dried it looked orange peel. Plus, at the edges of the fan it was landing on the surface, dry and dusty. Any pointers Pete? I'm a total novice, as you may have guessed 😂 Cheers Andy
@peteshobbies5383
@peteshobbies5383 7 месяцев назад
Hi Andy, If you have an R150, it is probably a 1.2 as they didn't make a 1.3. Take a look at the air horns. If there are 2 air holes in each horn, it's the later type with a bigger fan. The later type likes its air, so for clear, I would run it around 3.5 bar, the earlier type, one hole in each horn, around 3.2 bar. If any area is dry, it's because you are not putting enough on, the extra pressure will help with this, I would suggest you turn the fan in to make it small, as the majority of a frame isn't a wide area and you'll just be throwing excess material all over the place. Adjust the air pressure after you have turned the fan in as it will change as a result. I hope that helps 👍

Hi Pete, I hate Marmite!!! A very nice looking gun. Need to add one to my collection. A gun to me is like riding a bike. Once you have tried one, then the rest are no different. I swear, that the Bellaria W400 sits so comfortable, due to design, weight andvtrigger action. Enough said.

Hi Niam, how can you not like Marmite 😁😁, the DV1 is certainly a strange one, I was fully expecting a really awkward gun to set up, as you say it's a bit like riding a bike but i had heard so much on social media about the clear gun, some not good i must say, that it took me by surprise, it was effortless, really nice, fine for this comparison but would need to wind it in just a little to get a factory finish 👍

@@peteshobbies5383 Hmmmm, well Pete, I always set the fluid first. As soon as I feel pressure with my eyes closed. I stop wind the needle in a full turn and then see what the material is like depending on what finish you are trying to replicate. Every gun is different, but you still need a starting point. I use the first few passes on the tack coat to tweek the material, not the fan as that is mostly dialled in, it is material flow fan distance and gun speed OR air pressure which will determine the gun finish. But god that gun is slow, feels like an hvlp, close to the panel and small fan size.... Let me see...WS400....yes, need something more to convince me otherwise.... Be SAFE!!!

@peteshobbies5383

Hi Ray, I just have standard florescent lights with a few LEDs for extra lighting if needed, I use induction motor fans with the exit one having a filter that is attached to the front, they are not ATEX rated but have never caused any problems for the little i do. Everything is switch on before you start so no sparks, a compressor is also in there which could spark when it starts but I've never had a problem in 25 years so the compressor doesn't worry me

@peteshobbies5383
@peteshobbies5383 Год назад
Hi Jason, I presume you have been using MM2, which is the HS version? I use that as well and haven't had a problem with a soft finish, most like some heat, and in winter, you will struggle with anything that isn't extra fast harder, however, most of the time, 10c plus most clears should be fine within a day or 2, certainly to handle and polish if necessary although it can take a few weeks to fully cure depending on the clear. What hardener do you have for the MM2?

@@peteshobbies5383 yea mate I use the HS version it’s weird as I wet sanded and polished and it’s like glass , but I can put my finger nail in it . Weird maybe put too much clear on but I’m thinking of getting the UPOL or Kapci stuff which would you suggest for ease of use and drying
@peteshobbies5383

@Jason Jones Maybe it was a suspect batch of harder, the Kapci 6030 is good but it's the worst one I've used when it's cold, it come from Egypt so there Extra fast is like a fast, it struggles in winter unless you have some heat, fine in the summer though. The Upol doesn't flow as well, but goes off quickly especially with the extra fast but you can get some die back using extra fast

The quality of the clear will become obvious over time. Cheap clears will burn and haze in the sunlight. Quality clears will last decades longer. I have cars that are parked outside in the southern California sun that still look great after 20+ years. I use the cheaper clears on areas that won't see direct sunlight: door jambs, under the hood (bonnet), inside the trunk (boot) etc.
@peteshobbies5383
@peteshobbies5383 3 года назад
Hi David, Yes of course, The Upol 2080 i have used for years so i know it's last well, including on bikes in southern Spain which has a similar climate to southern California so it lasts under harsh conditions, similarly the Max Meyer 0300 but in the past i have always thought the more expensive one had a much better shine which just wasn't true although i thought it would be. What is difficult to show is the ease which the more expensive clear flows so is much easier to get a better finish, appreciate the comments👍

@davidparker9676 3 года назад
@@peteshobbies5383 A friend of mine was a chemist for PPG. He told me the base resin is the same for all clears, costing about $10 USD per gallon. The real difference in the clear coat is in the additives and solids content. Cheaper clears have low grade UV inhibitors and are thinned with solvent. High grade clears are not thin and contain very costly, high-grade additives. The best UV inhibitors are thousands of dollars per gallon. Cheap UV inhibitors give the clear a yellow cast, the expensive ones are crystal clear and do not affect the color of the base. Cheap clears with a yellow tinge can ruin a color match. I agree, an expensive clear makes it easier to spray and less likely to get drips, runs and sags. Thanks again for your video uploads and response comments.
@peteshobbies5383

Hi David, that's interesting, i know some cheap clears are definitely lower solids, there has to be a reason to all the differences in prices. I must admit, I have never tried any of the really expensive clears so maybe I'm missing out, the few i use don't seam to suffer from yellowing in the cup or after application even after many years, I know what you mean about it affecting colour , i see many cases of it on social media with various colours, it seams many clears have a yellowish tint, haven't noticed it on either of these to be fair, cheers 👍
