Margaret Potter explains why she and her husband, Tom, opened the Upstage Club in 1968 in Asbury Park. The Upstage is where Bruce Springsteen first met and played with Steve Van Zandt, Garry Tallent, Danny Federici, Vini Lopez, David Sancious and others. It is also where he got the nickname, "The Boss." More from Margaret will be forthcoming.

This is so frickin great ! Margaret was like a den mother to us young musicians at the Upstage. I was 19 when I started playing at the Green Mermaid coffeehouse on the second floor. We miss her. Please post a lot of stuff like this.

In 1968 I was the bass player in a group called The Pleasant Upset. We played for about 9 months at the Student Prince in AP. When we heard about the Upstage we would visit it frequently with another local group called Speed Limit 25. I loved the Upstage. I could either jam with other musicians or just sit and listen to some great music. I will never forget Tom when it was time to close and he would start from the back of the room turning on lights and yelling "TIME TO GET OUT OF THE (whisper...."fucking") POOL!!! over and over. Thank you Margaret and Tom for the wonderful memories you gave me.
