The Holy Grail of Jazz Drumming
You can check out my full method on my drum lessons site. One of the biggest on the planet. www.pmlessons.philmaturano.com
Welcome to the next workshop. In this workshop we are going to work on what many players consider the holy Grail of jazz drumming. Some thing that only the gifted and legendary can play. Up-tempo swing.
For some players just hearing that term causes the hair on the back of the neck to raise and an immediate sensation of panic.
But once I show you the secret to playing in up-tempo you’ll never have this problem again. As you will see, playing super fast tempo’s is more work of the mind then of the body. You don’t need to get hung up on developing insane hand technique or any crazy finger exercises. What do you need to know is how the secret ingredient of drumming functions at super high velocity‘s. That ingredient is Rhythm. Rhythmic knowledge is the key to playing. Without this knowledge, no matter how much hand technique you have, you won’t be able to play up-tempo jazz.
Jazz drumming has been at the forefront of the drumming community since it started. To play Jazz...to feel the sensation of freedom and creativity it brings is one of the best things one can experience as a musician. All the greats of drumming agree that if you have a foundation in Jazz even if it's not your professional choice to play it, you will greatly benefit your life in Drumming. Just participating in the art form is incredibly rewarding. It affects all other styles and the knowledge gained by playing this style is totally applicable in other genres.
If you want to see the full project with the trio you can see it all here.

This is a huge "AH-HA" moment I just received watching your video closely while counting and reading the notation/Drum Sheet Notes you provided at the very beginning of this video... This is exactly what I need to work on so I can play closer to how Elvin Jones plays and to play along with your Drumming. Both of you change up intervals of rhythms within a piece of music then go back to the original so you're still keeping time when you play but it sounds like you're changing time ! All I know is I have to go practice what you're doing in this video lesson 😅Thanks so much ❤

I can't believe you provide this content for free, Phil. Your channel is consistently giving out info that university music students pay tens of thousands of dollars for.

@philmaturanodrums Месяц назад
Thank you Ryan. Funny enough...many times they don't even get this information. The people teaching at most of those places don't have a clue about how to explain this or even that it exists. A piece of paper is their justification for the positions they hold and the students suffer for it. The politics of Music universities turns my stomach and I have seen the most inept people that can't even play hold tenured positions. LOL. Don't get me started haha. Hope you are well buddy and many greetings from Vietnam!

@@philmaturanodrums That's one of the reasons why I always tune in to this channel: not only do I get guidance here that I can't find pretty much anywhere else on RU-vid, but I always feel like your commitment to the instrument comes from a very sincere place. I never get the feeling that it's just about money or fame, or whatever. I can tell you're really about the music. One of these days, when I get my sons in school, get a kit, and get some actual free time, I'm gunna sign up for your online lessons and take a deep dive in to straight-ahead and salsa. Those two styles specifically.

This idea is absolutely fantastic. I studied jazz drumming at Music college in the early 2000's. Not once did any of my teachers explain how to approach fast tempos in the jazz context. The only useful thing was think slow phrasing while playing fast. Thanks so much for this informative lesson.

Hi bratha thank you for writing. Yeah....sadly drumming pedagogy in the last 20 years has been in the toilet with the advent of social media. We have lost the tradition of being apprentices. This type of information is so dense that the only way to get access to it was to hang for years with a teacher / mentor /player. This has almost disappeared in favor of RU-vid hacks showing every time more stick twirling - licks - and double bass drum inane useless material. Whatever you need regarding this info let me know. Here for you bro. All the best.

I know where the pocket is the most of the time feels pretty good but after all these years, it’s the first time I really understood what the hell jazz drummer was thinking First time in my life, I get it! pretty sweet. I like to work on some of those permutations .looks really fun no doubt about it. I think I’m digging it!! Thank You Much!
