I'd think a fingerboard could always be saved by planing. Why wasn't this one saveable?

Is this alcohol trick working with titebond? (for an upright bass neck dissassembly)

We will see the use of ebony banned in our lifetime. Its a shame to reduce it to shavings when it can still be used for so many things! Nuts, saddles, edge bumpers, extensions, etc etc etc...

What type of alcohol were you using?

Could you help me? I have a double bass with Ipe's fingerboard and would like to darken it, what better way to do it? it's possible? Thank you

Blast from the past. This bass (I've been meaning to name her for 10 years now) just got a new fingerboard three weeks ago.

The wrench was for the bolt that holds the neck support on the bench. It was the start of what ended up being a bad cold...a box of tissues wouldn't have helped!!! ;) Good point on being careful with the finish...the devil is in the details and it's hard to tell on video how little alcohol is being applied...Noah is extremely careful and probably the most patient restorer in the shop and thus does all of our fingerboard removals.

If not saving the old board - we'd plane it off. Zero damage to the neck - done in minutes with a power planer to begin with and then by hand as you get closer. The shame in that - even if not re-using the board there are always uses for the wood.

we made a heating iron for such basses. About 15 mintues does it...and they pop right off no problem.

what if you don't want to save the old board, what does the "quick" way involve in that case?

Will an electric bass fb come off this easily with this method?

by "alcohol" do you mean "white spirit" (same as is used for cleaning paint brushes)?
