Join me on an exhilarating journey through the vibrant streets of Bristol, UK, as I delve into the fascinating world of urban fox photography, illuminated by the magic of flash. In this captivating video, I team up with my good friend and fellow wildlife photographer, Marc Humphries, whose expertise in capturing the elusive beauty of urban wildlife is unparalleled.
Together, we embark on an unforgettable quest to capture the enchanting essence of Bristol's urban foxes, whose presence amidst the bustling cityscape adds a touch of wilderness to the urban fabric. Armed with our cameras and flashes, we venture into the nocturnal realm, where shadows dance and foxes roam freely under the cloak of darkness.
As Marc shares his insights and techniques honed through years of experience, we uncover the artistry behind capturing these majestic creatures in their urban habitat. From scouting locations to setting up equipment, every step is infused with excitement and anticipation, as we await the perfect moment to immortalise these charismatic beings through our lenses.
Through the lens of my camera, viewers witness the raw beauty of Bristol's urban foxes, their eyes gleaming with curiosity as they investigate what treats we may have for them. With each click of the shutter, we freeze moments in time, preserving the untamed spirit of these creatures against the backdrop of the city's ever-changing skyline.
But our journey is not just about photography; it's a celebration of the harmonious coexistence between nature and urban life. As we navigate the streets of Bristol, we encounter not only foxes but also glimpses of humanity's interconnectedness with the natural world, reminding us of the importance of preserving these precious moments of wildlife in our midst.
Join us on this mesmerising adventure as we illuminate the urban landscape with the grace and wonder of Bristol's urban foxes, captured in all their glory through the lens of flash photography. Get ready to be inspired, enchanted, and transported into a world where the boundaries between wilderness and civilisation blur into a symphony of light and shadow.

Thanks for another great video Dan, super creatures, charismatic and wily, wonderful footage as usual. I put dog kibble and peanuts out each night for the foxes and badgers, to see them on the trail camera, foxes are wary and stay down the dene but badgers always come up to the feeding platform by the back door ,wonderful to see. Back in the 70s when i was in the Fire Brigade on route to a shout at 1am in the morning I drove around this huge grassy roundabout only to see 5 foxes which i can assume were grubbing for worms in the wet grass, North London urbans . A scary experience was when flying my hawk a fox came out of the vegetation and theha took up chase, luckily as she was about to engage she thought better of it and veered away much to my relief. Nice to see you and Marc together thanks for a top video, hope Pops is on the mend and will be back on the scene soon.

What an interesting video. I can't believe how unafraid the foxes were or whether that is a good thing. As a teenager growing up in the UK, I worked on a private estate which reared pheasants so you don't need to be Einstein to work out how unpopular foxes were. I once read in the Shooting Times that if you came across a fox in the wild and the fox was running away from you try whistling loudly. Sure enough one day I disturbed a fox and it bolted. (I'm lucky enough to be able to whistle loudly using my fingers). As the fox took off I whistled, the fox immediately stopped, turned to look in my direction then took off again. If you had a gun this would have given you an opportunity to shoot it. Also if there is a fox in the area the Jays will be the first birds to start calling an alarm to warn of the presence of the fox and I have witnessed this. I can thoroughly relate to the appeal of watching wild life and foxes are no exception. However here in Australia they are an introduced pest species and are responsible for the extinction of some of our wildlife. No-one is allowed to keep one as a pet and it is illegal to feed them (exceptions for a licensed zoo). There are very large penalties in all states and the animal will be confiscated and destroyed.
@danwillis_photography
@danwillis_photography 2 месяца назад
Thank you for your comment and wonderful insight John. I think any introduction of an animal into an ecosystem has the potential to cause harm, just look at the devastating impact of grey squirrels on our red squirrels. I am aware that in Australia there have been a few introduced species which have caused significant harm non more so than the domestic cat! The cane toad also introduced as a pest control has caused huge damage to ecosystems. Foxes have been persecuted for sport in the UK for a longtime yet urban foxes do an amazing job at keeping Rat populations in check. Thanks again John and all the very best 👍🏻

Thanks Dan, love the subject. I used to keep a yacht in Gosport Marina and we regularly saw an urban fox wandering through the car park. On one evening I took a load of photos without any need for flash, just the evening light and the street lights and the fox came within just a few feet of me, totally relaxed. Four years ago we regularly had a pair of foxes visiting our garden at night. I took a number of images using a trailcam and then thought out how to photograph them with the D850 which was my main camera at the time. I set up two flash units and put the D850 on a mini-tripod so the camera was down low. I put out some food and went to bed!!! I had (and still have) a Hahnel Capture Pro with an infra-red trigger unit which I set up so the beam crossed close in front of the food and pre-focused the camera at that spot. As I lay in bed I was aware of the flash units going off quite a bit. Next morning I had around 130 photos! Many of those were when moths crossed the trigger beam but I was delighted with a few of the foxes. But the best part was when one of our cats stalked a fox and ultimately chased it which gave me a superb shot of the fox on the run with the cat in hot pursuit with all four paws off the ground. Unfortunately the neighbours complained about all the flashes so i have never been able to repeat the exercise. Here's a video i made of the episode - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LZ4oa54v4j8.html

What a wonderful comment to read and a video which I will look forward to watching mate, sounds like the fox well and truly got told off by your cat 😂😂😂 I too started off camera trapping in the garden, much to our neighbours dismay 🤦🏻‍♂️ I now keep it strictly to the woods and fields 👍🏻
@SwanSycorax

@@danwillis_photography I nevder had any complaints about the camera traps (I had two in the garden), it was just the flash units that upset one neighbour. Didn't both the others as their bedrooms were on the oposite sides of their houses, but one said she liked to sleep with the curtains open to let in fresh air and so the flashes lit up her bedroom on a sporadic basis!!!! Oh well, can't win them all!

Great video Dan & what a great looking workshop. I do feel that foxes like any predator are going to have many opinions regarding killing them or culling them depending on where you live. I recently moved to mid Wales which is currently going through the lambing season & the fox amongst many other predators is the farmers nightmare because they take the new born lambs. Sometimes the fox kills the new born lamb straight away, but quite often it will just grab it by the neck & run off with it & the screams & sounds that come from the new born lamb can be horrific. They will also sit beside a pregnant yew whilst she is in labour & as the lamb exits the yew will just grab it & run off with it which again is horrific to witness. I moved here from a town & thought exactly as you do, but since being here appreciate that there are two sides to this argument which no doubt will go on for a very long time. Bottom line for me if a fox has to be eradicated, it has to be done humanely & not done as a sport. Love the videos mate, keep them coming. 👍👍

Thanks very much Mark, appreciate your response and for shedding light onto quite a difficult topic. Hunting is something that as you quite rightly say, splits opinion and those in the countryside will always have a different opinion to urban dwellers. Glad you enjoyed the video. All the best
@user-markparker
@user-markparker 2 месяца назад
@@danwillis_photography Totally agree Dan. The fox is a beautiful animal but at the same time like any predator has to eat & sometimes it’s what it eats & the manner it does it creates a difference of opinion especially in rural areas. But again as you say how anyone could hurt one is beyond me! If a fox enters a chicken run it’s renowned for killing ALL the chickens in the run which people assume it does because it enjoys the killing part, but I read somewhere that it does that to secure a food source & will return to the run until it has eaten all of the chickens it has killed. Take care mate, hope your dad’s on the mend & look forward to seeing you both in future videos.

Hi Dan. What auto focus mode did you use on the Z9. Thanks. Great channel, thank you (and Pops)
@danwillis_photography
@danwillis_photography Месяц назад
Hi Gary, I use a combination of focus modes. I have wide area small on the shutter button, 3d tracking on the back button, small group on the front top button and single point on the front bottom button. I flick between them to achieve lock and then stick with 3d tracking. The key here though was lighting the subject with a torch to give the camera something to focus on and then switching off the torch so it didn’t affect the shot 👍🏻

Thanks very much Bob, really appreciate it. The flashes were provided by Marc and were Yongnuo which is a brand from Amazon I think. I had left my speed lights at home unfortunately or I would have used mine. I use Godox TT600’s and Godox trigger. They are a fantastic set of flashes and the trigger is brilliant as you can change the power of your flashes from the trigger. I have Nikon sb28 speed lights for my camera trap work. Hope that helps and best of luck with it 👍🏻

Thanks very much Dennis. The flashes were set on a very low power 1/128 and the iso is then used to get the correct exposure. I did increase the power for the backlit shots on the stump to around 1/64 power with the front fill flash at 1/128. I always try to have a key light about twice the power of the fill light to get a lighting effect that creates 3d shapes with the light and shadows, when both flashes are equal the lighting can be quite flat. Hope that helps 👍🏻
