Urban Reign is better than your favourite open world action game 

Urban Reign had reversal, comeback, combos, aerial grabs, weapons, animations and everything to be the best game ever.

This game was massivley underrated. It's so amazing. The fact that it is so unique and satisfying to play is enough to give this game a 10/10 for what it was trying to accomplish 👏

This should be recommended to everyone so everyone gets hype and wants a sequel

namco and project soul should bring this game back alive on ps4

You are absolutely right about this game making you "work for it". Back when I was about 12 years old me and all of my schoolmates were playing this and we would always tell each other how "I'm stuck at x level", or "I couldn't beat Jake", or "dude the Chinese guy is impossible" etc... You had to fight each boss 5 or 6 times until you gathered enough experience about the fighter and about game combat in general to keep advancing.

I agree with your assessment that fighting has been dumbed down in modern open world games because they're trying to do a little of everything instead of focusing on being really good at one thing. However, I would also add that I believe the industry has dumbed down gaming in general in order to appeal to the masses. By appealing to the lowest common denominator (ie. casuals), the industry will gain a larger audience and make more money in sales. That said, From Software seem to be leading the charge for a resurgence in challenging games. hopefully this continues.

Playing this game now. Wow. Just pure fun. Just wish it had an action replay option and a more coherent lock on target system. It seems they hadn't perfected the R3 camera control too but apart from that I love this game. The video is spot on - they have forgotten how to make games FUN. Tony Hawks 1+2 and Ace Combat 7 on PS4 are the only modern games I've played which provide a similar hit of instant gratification and also require technical mastery to complete.

Thanks for this. I was looking for good 3D beat-em-ups that weren't God Hand, and I managed to discover Urban Reign. I saw some gameplay videos and the great combat animations reminded me of Tekken, which is no coincidence since it's the same developer. But I didn't know anything about the combat mechanics themselves. Your video sold them to me and convinced me to try it out. If this game is as good as you say it is, then it may very well turn out like God Hand in that it also becomes a cult classic in the future that in the past was also unfairly maligned by scrubby critics. Anyway, since I don't have a PS2, the only way I can play this is emulator. I'm not gonna ask for a ROM, but rather I want to ask for emulation settings. Would you happen to know the best PCSX2 settings for this game?

At 6:04: My trick is to activate the blue power with "Park" (character dodge and reversal every attack) and stand still. The CPU will try to attack you but will lose Spirit and I gain spirit because of successful dodging.

A year ago, I completed all of the 100 missions with an S rank. It was a challenging, sometimes a bit unfair yet a fun experience. Especially when you needed to play with a sub-par partner or even a bad character yourself, while on hard (or even very hard) difficulty.

I've never heard of this game until this video. I was genuinely surprised by the quality of the animations. Some of the grabs and throws here look genuinely better than some games nowadays. But it also looks FUN. It goes to show the absolute supremacy and library of the PS2 era. I'll miss it. I hope the next generation of young gamers gets an era like this.

This game combat system is a master piece, I am a big fan of fighting games and beat em ups on 2d, never got a 3d game who could mix those concepts well into his mechanics. Never had such fun getting owned by the cpu, and plating coop with the 2 player cheat code was a blast. Can remember getting owned by the 2 big guys from the stage previous to the end stage, me getting owned and watching my bro getting beaten on the surroundings. Literally laughing in tears. I even bought 4 controllers and a multitap just to play this game with friends. Massively underrated, def jam fight 4 ny was great too, but this one was better, the coop camera was better tho. Other game I used to play a lot in 4 player was spawn for dreamcast, loved it.

This game is art. Personally, this is one of my favorite PS2 games of all time. Everything about this game hold up. And what's interesting as while it's hard, it gives you the tools to defeat your enemies. That opens up opportunities and I am always learning something new. Awesome video. Such a shame this was a flop back then. The game still looks and plays great too! I heavily recommend Urban Reign too. It's one of my personal game of all time.

I still play Urban Reign, and even when I take some long breaks from it, when I come back, it takes some time for me to get the hang of it. That's the beauty of Urban Reign, it always challenges you when you are not in practice.

God hand and Urban reign on ps2 are awesome games i played,urban reign is best brawler i've played,i like the way its made,its very unique and satisfying when playing(only if you've played story mode and mastered every move),mere playing in multiplayer mode for first time will not let you master it. if i was there to make games ill choose their sequels. :)

This might just be me; but was the emulator you were capturing footage from sped up? The game seems much faster than it was on my PS2.

Props to Ninja Gaiden Black as well. Enemies also swarm you in that game rather than politely take turns to hit you. Most action games today use the combat system pioneered in Assassin's Creed which make them rather samey and boring to play. Shadow of Mordor is a good example of this (I would rather they use a refined version of the combat system in LOTR: ROTK than the former). Namco Bandai should make another beat em up using Tekken's 7 animations as a base. Release it as a digital copy to cut costs, probably. I would also like to see another Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks using MK11 technology.

I still miss this game even today. Me and my buds always considered it as a 4-way Tekken, which is actually right up our alley as we basically grew up playing Tekken and Guilty Gear.

I really do hope there is a hd remake with 60 fps and put on the current gen/ next gen consoles or if we can get a Urban Reign 2 iwould also be fine

Japanese games have always had superb beat 'em up and Hack and Slash combat, no matter what year their games were released. I think God of War (2005) was the first Western game to truly have a polished and satisfying combat.

Underrated game that I can't forget about it

I was hoping that Brad Hawk was some sort of Season Pass Character for Tekken 7. I played Urban Reign when i was like 10 y/o on a ps2 demo disc and never got my hands on it actually. But now through the power of emulation I beat it multiple times. The unlocks and Free Mission Challenges are insane and the fact you can literally play them as everyone makes it even more fun. But I never got to unlock Bordin sadly.

Great now I want to play it again. It aged wonderfully.

I never heard this game before I tried it in a demo disc. I was instantly hooked on the gameplay and seek it out and bought the game. Unlike game like Devil May Cry that I still didn't finish, I kept playing this game until I finished it.

Holyshit all of this is so true! The moment I played urban reign I was like damn this is nothing like I have played before and it is better than all of them rewarding and punishing at the same time. You absolutely cannot button smash to complete this game. You will have to learn the moves and the difficulty levels in this game are well appreciated! It becomes so frustating sometimes but I always come back to it. It is hands down the greatest hand to hand combat game and is damn underrated!

a few days ago i started to play musou games (A.K.A dynasty warrior games) i wanted to play some gundam games cause "dynasty warriors gundam 2" was one of my most played in ps2 since i was a kid, and then one thing lead me to another, i was looking up to emulate other great titles with this question in my mind "how easy could be this game now that i have so much experience behind" when i was a kid i just couldn't handle that many games, but i loved the hard ones, i wanted to test myself and started with this one urban reign, i first go to practice to test controls and combos, then when i realized you can evade attacks mashing a button, i was kinda dissapointed until i played the game, fuck me this IA is aggressive.

It's a really good fighting system. Urban Reign got average ratings by critics, and I'm still not sure why. Moves are gracefully animated and look brutal, there's a lot of interaction with the background, and if it's too hard, you can adjust the difficulty to suit you. Also, you're right... this "jack of all trades, master of none" mindset isn't working for video games anymore. Why play a Grand Theft Auto game with a dozen different distractions when the core of the game is no fun?

i disagree that the problem with modern combat style is only the Y button, it's more like they don't feel satisfying which ranges from hit back, effect, sound design and the general speed and absurdity of the animations.
