@@XhristinaMacey 'twas indeed - very noisy, the frame flat (the big open downstairs area) had a constant Zip KerClunk noise with a distinct smell of machine oil and wool, knitting all the panels, then upstairs where they were linked together to form a garment, there was a constant viiiip viiiip viiiip noise :)
Hi Anne im glad the video brought back memories x I spoke with the landlord in the pub afterwards he was telling about how busy his pub was and how he worked there too, sounded like a great place to work
@@XhristinaMacey the work was performance based. Typically we would make 144 garments a shift. The frames could rattle off 12 sleeves in around 5-6 minutes. I was skinny in those days 😆
Worked there 1984- 2000, then 2005 til they closed it.. or run it into the ground with the abysmal management. When I joined there were 60 frames on treble shifts, and over time.. 30,000 garment a week.. down to zero.. so 180 frame workers, add in the undreds of binders, hand sewers, knitting machine operators, yarn store, winders, shimas.... and now just rotting away.
It’s a huge place didn’t really capture how big it is, the barman was talking to me about his days working there and the wages being extremely good, he said it employed 500 people and the pub was brisling everyday, sad most of the textile industry has gone, thanks for sharing your memories, makes making these videos special 👍
Well this made me sad, I worked there in the mid/late 90s, at 0:45 the room on the left was my workshop ( I was an apprentice with two other engineers) where you were standing was the embroidery machines.
It looked like you were there on a very cold day. Sad ending for far too many companies. Good you are preserving some of the history. Once again, the perfect sound tract. xx
@@margaretmacey3473 A Managing Director who was conned by a "Management Consultant" into betting the Crown Jewels on his "Vision" for Pringle, and lost the bet... A classic example was those stupid bloody Goretex golf suits that had trousers with a mesh liner that couldn't be put on while you had your golf shoes on.... FFS!
I had a pint in the pub next door to the mill beautiful old Victorian place and could feel the sadness of a once thriving community gone quiet 🤐 thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts GTR ❤️
Hi Cristina 👋 Boy, that looks very cold. Mind you it's coming into that time of year. 5:02 Geez that guy in the picture doesn't look very happy. How did they sell that design? Or maybe it's poor modelling choices that caused its downfall.
Yes a long cold winter ahead x the mill made Pringle golf jumpers, you maybe right, it’s definitely a dower photograph and it could be the reason the whole of the textile industry in hawick disappeared 👍❤️ thanks for stopping by sn00ze you’re awesome 🤩
