I was terrified to remove my stent at home. Seven days of worrying doesn’t help, but I can tell you all it is about 5 seconds of an odd feeling. It doesn’t hurt at all to remove it, but you will psych yourself out leading up to it. Just grab the string and give it a steady, not hard pull and it will be over with before you know it

Did it today sitting in a tub of warm water. It was a double stent. Pulled one out at a time. No pain No blood. Freaked myself out for nothing.

Warning, as I found out first hand, just b/c the surgeon says the stent will be removed in 7-10 days, the schedule may be so busy that your left to live with it for more than a freaking month! Then if you try to be active the pain is much worse and you can enjoy seeing significantly more blood in your urine than before the stent was installed! Nightmares are real

I had the same experience. It was truly frustrating to follow all the instructions given to me by my doctor and dietitian, yet still seeing bloods on my urine when I move more than 3k steps. The stent stayed with me for 3 months and a week. Those days, esp at night which irritates me everytime I laid down to sleep. To the point I even called my doctor to do full checkup on me, cause I have suspicion about having prostrate cancer but luckily didn't have so I was left no choice but endure a bit.

I had a stent placed a couple of months ago. My husband and I removed it at home and it wasn’t bad at all. I felt a little ‘raw’ for a few days but other than that it was fine. So thankful these doctors were there to help me through my third kidney stone experience.

Honestly, I think it depends on your Dr. My first Dr placed a stent and I had it for 7 weeks. It was MISERABLE. I was nauseous, lost 20 pounds, and wanted NOTHING to do with another one. Here we are, a year later, stone number 4, DIFFERENT Dr., another stent-TOTALLY different experience! Only discomfort-no “pain”, nausea, and this Dr. placed a thread for me to remove myself. Had I had THIS sort of experience the first time, I would be positive about stents, too.

I'm glad somebody else said this, because I have had 5 ureteral stents and they are far more painful than the actual kidney stones in my experience. It literally feels like they left a metal tool inside of you. But when I would call and say the pain is so intense I can't sleep, they would act like I was a baby or overreacting, or fishing for pain meds maybe... My first stent placement wasn't painful after two days and I only had to keep it in for a week, but the others were pure misery and left in for 1-2 months. Some people say they don't bother them much at all, so I think it varies case by case. I bet you're feeling better now lol.

Hi Dr. I'm a 40 yo female. I had kidney stone removed with stent on left side. The stent dislodged and I had to go back for emergency surgery the next day to replace it with a larger stent. The stent was removed a week later but I didn't feel a thing when they removed it. A couple months later and I now have spasm like pain in my lower abdomen. It comes and goes. Walking and not emptying my bladder often both cause the pain to get worse. Sometimes just doing light household chores will kick up the pain which ranges from mild to severe. The pain is low and in the middle by the bottom of my bladder. They can't find a stricture. They said it's not a uti or kidney stone causing the pain. What else could it be? Would prednisone maybe help with any swelling there may be? Thank you!

Dr. Reznicek, my left ureter was damaged during a kidney stone removal two years ago and apparently it is beyond repair so my urologist/surgeon has been replacing the stent every four to six months. It seems that there must be a limitation to these exchanges, so may I ask you what I might expect as time goes by? Will the ureter and kidney eventually fail after this or that many exchanges? What will the surgeons do at that point, what is the usual procedure. I am a 74 year old patient in fairly good health otherwise, so please be frank. I suspect there must be many others like me around so maybe you could build a video around this subject. My long-term stent has been very stable for months now, virtually no or very little bleeding. Thanks for any information you might provide on the subject. Herb Slojewski, Glendale, California.
@pnus
@pnus 3 года назад
Ureteral stricture or scar tissue narrowing of the ureter is not that common. It is difficult to manage if high up in the ureter. There are some surgical repair options. I wouldn't be able to do a consultation over the comments but I would suggest meeting with a reconstructive urologist for a second opinion to talk about reconstruction if it is possible. For patients with good kidney function on the other side, sometimes a nephrectomy or removal of the kidney with the damaged ureter is also an option. We do have some patients on chronic stent changes for many years though. As long as they are exchanged before they are encrusted people usually do well.

Just had my stent put in on Christmas Eve. I called within the 7 to 10 days and the earliest they can even get me in for a follow up is January 15th. Not bad I don’t guess, but I’m kinda nervous since I’ve had very light pain in my abdomen and I constantly feel gassy without actually passing gas. Is any of this normal? Has anyone else experienced these symptoms? I’ve read that a little blood in the urine is normal, but how much blood? From time to time mine ranges from a hint of pink to like a watery red wine. Just hoping to find some answers as my urologist is out of the office til Monday.

I just had UPJ surgery, PCNL surgery through my back and into kidney to remove large amount of stones. Plus ureteroscopy during same anesthesia. Had a CT scan the day after the surgeries and it said there is an 8mm stone mid ureter that was not there before. My Dr. said she did not see that when she was doing surgeries and that it was possibly "outside the vessel" or a calcification. I thought Ct scans were very accurate. Do you think somehow during my procedures that a stone fell in or was left in and then she put the stent in. She also had to go in a few days later because the CT scan showed stent too high up and had to be brought down. I have a lot if distrust in this urologist now and am going to try to get a new Dr. ASAP. Can another urologist remove my stent? Supposed to be in for 5-6 weeks. Worried about the 8mm stone and what is going to happen with it. PLEASE help!

Had two stents thanks to a large kidney stone. IF you need a stent get the one with the string hanging out of your penis. Yes, sounds gross but you will not feel it. The string makes removal of the stent much, much easier and fast. I am a 77 year old male with a long history of kidney stones. They finally broke it up with a laser, going up inside. I have severe hydronephrosis of a kidney, nephrostomy tube converted to double J stent. stone is lodged in ureter above bladder. The kidney and ureter swelling needs to heal during this time. Waiting now to hear from my doctor as to what is next. I asked about Lithotripsy, but he passed that off as not an option, rather a cystoscopy procedure was preferred My question for you today is how will they remove and replace the new stent as they are only good for 3 months? Do they place a wire through the stent so as to pass by the stone and slide the stent off the wire and then a new stent onto the wire and into place?, because they had a difficult time getting the first stent placed the first time and now that the tube out they have to go up from below. Thank you.

I have stent inserted about four weeks ago because of 7mm stone in ureteral. Its is v painful and i am having blood with urine everyday. The doctors dont want to remove it for next 5 - 6 weeks. Can you please guide me what shall i do? First of all why did they insert this stent without removing stone and then it is more painfull than stone itself. Need expert's advice 💐. Thanks. I am 36 male from London, UK

Hi bro I’m 18 and had my laser surgery few days ago I really hope you are doing ok l, well the doctor even advised me to have the stent placed in me for 2 weeks snd then he said after 2 weeks I will get the stent removed and then get the surgery that is because my ureteral lining was not wide enough according to him but I had to travel on emergency basis so I asked him to perform the laser surgery on the same day at the same time the process was quick and painless Alhamdulillah and the stent was in place after surgery and removed after 2 days

Maybe you had an infection and they have to get that cleared up first.

I am going through this right now. I have had the stent in two weeks with constant blood urine. I will be seeing the doctor this week and I know something is not right, What happened with you and did you end up ok with the stent removal?

Utter nonsense. Yes it IS easy to remove. I am a nurse and removed my own once. Came right out. It is INTENSE pain. Imagine all the pain of a stone being passed, condensed into 2-3 seconds.

I had a stent placed a couple of months ago. My husband and I removed it at home and it wasn’t bad at all. I felt a little ‘raw’ for a few days but other than that it was fine. So thankful these doctors were there to help me through my third kidney stone experience.
