Someone should definitely be held accountable for this. Total dereliction of duty. I suppose it's possible that the government wasn't made aware that these poor people hadn't been evacuated but whoever runs that center definitely did.
Wow that's awesome those pilots are so brave to fly into those storms to get that extremely important information to prepare people as much as possible for what's coming their way. Those people envolved are all true heroes. That work could turn dangerous at any time for them. So brave!🙏

I really hope that the people of Florida are okay and they get all the services they need and the loss of life and property is minimal. My brother is planning to move to Sarasota and retire in about 6 years he may reconsider not sure how this will affect insurance rates.
I doubt if they can get covered. I lived in a flood zone before and no Insurance Co., would cover it. I didn't know it was one before I moved in. Thank goodness the hurricane victums have FEMA and POTUS Biden/Harris to help them!

@gsp49 What's sad to me is the failure to recognize that each gallon, each drop of fossil fuel we burn contributes to the precise conditions that are increasing the frequency and intensity of hurricanes. By flooding the state with extra fossil fuels shipments and normalizing excessive fossil fuel use, Governor De Santis is enabling or tricking Florida residents in doing more of the very thing that will bring increasingly destructive hurricanes to the state -- essentially encouraging them to drink the kool-aid, to act as if fossil fuel driven climate change does not exist... This is sad to me because I love my fellow Americans, I have love for all of us. I'm a climate scientist, it makes me sad, very deeply sad, when I see trusted professionals encouraging people to act against their and their children's (and their grandchildren's, etc) better interests. It makes me sad like there's less hope for us all than there would be if Governor De Santis was an honest and responsible, informed man.
I'm not saying that everyone needs to stop using fossil fuels immediately -- we can't! We're structurally addicted, locked in. But to disrespect the reality by encourage flagrant fossil fuel use is anaethma to me -- fossil fuels are precious! Yes, they are Carbon from the age of the dinosaurs and have lain within the earth's crust for eons. Yes, we have released inordinate amounts of these fossil fuels into our modern Carbon cycle. Yes, we are suffering the effects, in intensified hurricanes like Helene and Milton ... So it seems to me that the least we can do us try to tone it down a little bit. Like show a little restraint and forethought, respect when using fossil fuels. I'm sad because Governor De Santis leads us in the opposite direction, the opposite direction of where we need to go ... I don't know, that makes ne sad. When I think of people unknowingly and unintentionally bringing harm on themselves and their loved ones -- that makes me sad.
