I grew up in Soviet Union listening to Uriah Heep. It was that little gulp of fresh air that held us together. Worn magnetic tapes recorded ten fold from bootlegged LPs that were smuggled across the Iron Curtain.
@Raven Reda Forgive me, isn't it: " and when he spoke I felt a deep desire, to free the world of it's fear and pain etc"? I love this song, and lyrics change in live shows... What I really want to say is you're right, a masterpiece. May the million silver stars guide/guard you with their light/in the night. Can I steal the galaxy icon? 💫💫💫 that one?
This song has more meaning today in 2024 than it did in 1972. Always one of my favorite songs by these guys. Rest In Peace Ken Hensley, Lee Kerslake, Dave Byron and Gary Thain. Gone but never forgotten.
The words to this song will live forever . Hopefully. I watched this exact video hundreds of times and I think I'm just getting started. 😊 I was 7 years old when this album was born. "The Magician's Birthday" is also magnificent!
My grandpa (57) bought a new sound system for his living room and to test it out, he showed me (17) this song and I can’t describe the feeling it gave me. I’ll always remember that time.
@Linebeck - hold on to that feeling and this song. I'm a member of your grandfather's generation, but have little chance to interact with young people. It makes me happy others, like your grandfather, put the gifts of great music in your hands to keep it safe and alive. My solemn regards to your grandpa, my best wishes to you.
I remember my dad gave me this record on my 18th birthday. It was like a right of passage in his eyes, and I understood after listening. Listening to this record for the first time, with dear old dad next to me, it felt like I was sitting there with his 18yo self. Unreal feeling.
Can remember seeing these guys in the 70s at the Akron Civic theater Friday, Saturday, Sunday night tickets were 3dollars good old days! never forget Ken Hensley s keyboards
That voice! Never to be matched again in Rock. I first heard Byron sing this song when I was very young and I was mesmerised from the first note. I learnt to sing rock by listening to Byron's vocals. I admire Hensley's incredible songwriting - numbers that were scaled for a big Rock sound and that mean something. Today I am old and the memories of covering some of their songs are pure gold. This is the greatest rock band of all time.
Takes me back to my schooldays. No videos in those days and never saw the band live, so have to thank the wonders of RU-vid for bringing it all to life.
He was the wizard of a thousand kings And I chanced to meet him one night wandering He told me tales and he drank my wine Me and my magic man, kind of feeling fine He had a cloak of gold and eyes of fire And as he spoke, I felt a deep desire To free the world of it's fear and pain And help the people to feel free again Why don't we listen to the voices in our hearts 'Cause then I know we'd find we're not so far apart Everybody's got to be happy, everyone should sing For we know the joy of life, the peace that love can bring So spoke the wizard, in his mountain home The vision of his wisdom means we'll never be alone And I will dream of my magic night And a million silver stars that guide me with their light
Most of us will never know that kind of suppression. We took it for granted and complained when our beer was warm. I am glad you could enjoy it and I hope you and all those who suffered are doing well.
Yeah his voice is great but Steven Perry sounds like a little pussy and still trying to figure out if he is a man or a woman, don't compare this man's voice to that little femboy you Tool!!
My boyfriend taught me this song in 1979, before I'd ever heard it on an album or radio. He needed me to sing the harmony for him when he performed it on stage. I sang what I thought sounded best with it. Later, when I heard the original, I was amazed! I had nailed the harmony vocals right on the money! Pretty cool.
@@laurenceaholland Apart from the bass player, I think they all sung pretty well in harmony. Ken Hensley matched with David Byron's vocals. Like counter-tenors!
We’re you with us back in those days? I was a teenager. It was magical. The music. It took us places. It was never supposed to end, but sadly, it did. We grew old. Some have gone on. But every time I pause and listen once again to the music, I hear the Wizard. Somewhere in the recess of our spirit, he still lives. If you weren’t there, I’m sorry for you. It was spiritual. Long live the Wizard.
This song is magical! And beautiful music. It never stops sounding so like a new beginning. Uriah Heep is one of those bands you cannot believe are not far more celebrated for their greatness. Monsters!
@@FirCorred No, sorry, I just love the aura of a lot of Uriah Heep's music. Especially the early albums through Sweet Freedom. But I will tell you who is a phenom lover of science fiction, lead singer Eric Bloom of Blue Oyster Cult. I am sure he knows and loves Tanith if you say she is special. He uses science fiction writers for a number of their lyrics. You want to talk about another hard rock phenom along with Uriah (where the critics and a majority of hard rock fans missed the boat), listen to the album "Secret Treaties" alone.
@@jehanne8610 yes, it shows in the underrated song The Old Gods Return. I guessed you like Tanith Lee cause Jehanne is a recurrent name in her work, especially in the Books Of Paradys. She's not bad, her Vis Cronicles are among the Million Favored Ones (:
I grew up with so many excellent bands. Uriah heep toured with Deep Purple their concerts were magical. I still love this tune for what the song tells us! Thankful to grow up with the best music I still listen to today! Never grow up!
Ahhh......The 70's. A time when our clothing was highly flammable (polyester), Barber shops and hair salons were dropping like flies, every home had ONE (1) phone and it was bolted to the kitchen wall. Socializing wasn't a solitary event, the best memories could be made walking a few blocks down the street and no matter where you went, the sound track to our young lives was always being recorded. Music EVERYWHERE!! And MY personal favorite..... I was dating the son of a preacher, who was probably the biggest stoner in the neighborhood:) (The son, not the preacher) LOL. Looking back now, even the bad times were good.
He was frigg'n ''STELLER'' !! Would of been someth'n if him & Tommy Bolin got together on this earth,, & not just about the same time in Heaven. RIP both you Guys !!
He was the wizard of a thousand kings And I chanced to meet him one night wandering He told me tales, and he drank my wine Me and my magic man kinda feelin' fine He had a cloak of gold and eyes of fire And as he spoke, I felt a deep desire To free the world from it's fear and pain And help the people to feel free again Why don't we listen to the voices in our hearts 'Cause then I know we'd find that we're not so far apart
Yeah... That's probably the best message you can give to people - from everywhere in the world - behind the iron curtain, in front of it or whatever... 'Cause that's not what is ultimately important/essential.
@@davorinflis3825 I hope I don't sound ridiculous... Both you and Boza Stamatovic are right, especially in 202o-21, when mostly useless rules and fears are created to make us forget this fact, this connection. RU-vid isn't without guilt, but there are voices/comments to be found here that are impossible to deny. Fear isn't a virtue, if we don't reach and take hold of people, we lose everything.
@@davorinflis3825 - You're very kind. Meat Loaf says in Rock 'n Roll Dreams: "someone must have blessed us when they gave us these songs". It doesn't matter who blessed us, what we do with the blessings is important. Music like this lets us remember what is real and allows us to clasp hands for a moment across every distance there is. Thank you for reaching.
Ah, the classic UH, Ken Hensley is a genius out of proportion self taught musician, Gary Thain must be Top 3 bass player ever, David Byron among the best rock band front man, Mick Box as the perfect guitarist for a band and Lee Kerslake the power house of the group, their vocals are a reference still today. Good memories as a teenager in the 70's.
+1 there ! 😉 Think because of them pretty much being Musicians Musicians. This is not easy stuff to play or sing,, period. I've been playing Bass for years,, & still can only slop thru Gary Thains Bass parts.
🗣 This is one of the most beautiful songs of the legendary group U.H. From the best period of *ROK* music, their 5 first released albums remained unforgettable .
My entire childhood was restricted from music. Upon graduation I discovered Uriah Heep among others. What a revelation. I continue on "a journey of a thousand years."
I can relate. My mom tossed my Kiss Records, and a few others. (one of the reasons that I'm, ah, "traumatized" by organized religions. - I did have some Uriah Heep tapes in my inventory at one time.
***** I think most of us did things like that. Funny thing was, I could still listen to the radio, and tape things off of it, if I had wanted to, or make tapes, without really any name attached to the tape.
This song is truly inspirational. Just beautiful.Thank you Uriah Heep. This song takes me back to my youth. Oh for a real time machine. :) Cosentino, Perth West Australia 8/2/19
The best of the best rock bands of the 1970's. It's so hard to believe this was 50 (!!!!) years ago. God bless Gary, David, Lee, and Ken. Rest in peace, brothers. Keep kickin' it, Mick. You are a rock and roll legend!
Saw this band at Reading festival back in 1977. Expected to hate them. Ended up being one of the best live bands I've ever seen. Still love them to this day!
That's super cool ! Mick Box walked right up to me years ago & shook my hand,, followed by the whole Band,,,, when I was standing in line to see them. Blew the other Fans away around me. Must of been my Hippy Biker/ Rocker,, long hair ect.. LOL. ✌😎👍 Still have the long hair almost down to my waist,, but getting pretty thin on top... 😔 Am in decent shape though ,,for my age,, & try to stay active,, plus still pound the Bass,, which will always keep you young ! 😉 Ian
crazze6163 Ok, you guys too! Ride'in around listening to good rock and roll look'in for chicks, sounds great, and I know what ya mean. I had a fucked up, rusty '59 Chevy, but it had a great Clarion component system in it, and I used to take it out every night so it wouldn't get stolen. With kick ass coaxial speakers front and back. Ya, that was all we needed for sound then!
...from the album Demons and Wizards. Truly one of the greatest collections of glam rock. Brings me back to those innocent days. This entire album was magnificent. Circle of Hands was also an unbelievable song. Poetry and Heep's sound was fantastic. Their follow up album the Magicians Birthday was also incredible. Unfortunately I never saw them in concert. RIP Guys. You made this child of the 60's and 70's very happy with your music. Thank you !!
I saw them live on Cape Cod '73 (?). They were acoustically perfect. Clean, crystally clear, great tone. Just awesome. Opening act was Earth Wind and Fire.
Now ticket costs 300$ and all we hear is techno mixed rap R&B with crappy lyrics, and we are deaf for 3 days after the show because we were " lucky " to get spot under 20m 1500W woofer oomph ... oomph ... yes, I miss 70's too ....
I just don't think people are brave enough to do music like this. This music is out-of-style these days. People seem to want to focus on boring boy/girl songs. If not that, they want goofballs pretending to be criminals and blabbering instead of singing. There seems almost to be an aversion to being good at playing an instrument well in most pop and rock music today. This music has higher aspirations lyrically, and the musicianship is top-notch all the way around. I'm afraid someone trying to write songs like this today would just get made fun of by cynics and called "Spinal Tap" or "dad rock" or worse. The purity and innocence of this song, and the aspiration to reach higher and create a better world, is something that, unfortunately, a lot of people can't seem to connect with right now. It takes guts to make music like this in the current social environment, and I hope that one day some band will get up there and start singing about wizards and world peace again, because we damn sure need it. Now I'm off my soapbox.
Because "we" already have it. It is "ours" and they can't take it from us. We lived with the Wizard in his mountain home. Something, kids will never understand.
What musical geniuses these guys really were and will remain that way for ever no other rock band could ever come close to these guys complete quality forever RIp David you are a legend
