Ursula Burns: Are Leaders Born or Made? 

Hey Anne, what are you thinking???? Stock is flat over several years, you buy a company for $6B and fall face first into the ground. She hasn't helped the shareholders or the employees. She has lined her pockets with millions while thousands have been let go (while at the same time she says they can't find qualified people). So what has she done for the general population? The answer is nothing. You and don seem to be on the same page. Are you a do for yourself and F the world type of person? If you HAD a company, you most likely would be CEO! Strive for something more...like McD's work looking to make $15/hour.

Lol! I am not talking about Xerox. I am actually in pharmaceuticals. I hope to be CEO at my company one day. I want to be at the helm when we finally find the cure for Alzheimer's! We're getting there :)

Certainly an admirable goal and a worthy cause. Alzheimer's has a devastating affect on 10's of thousands. I wish you and all others working on a cure luck. But why Ursula? You could have picked any one of thousands of CEO's/leaders. Her track record isn't one of success.

We come from similar backgrounds - my mom was a hard-working lady in a poor neighbourhood, albeit in Africa/London - although our dad did come back into our lives and as he is an MD, we didn't struggle much after that. Still, for a good portion of my life my mom had very little and raised good kids nonetheless. I like Ursula's values and the fact that even though she may not have achieved much for the company's development since being CEO, she still inspired lots of girls (esp from minority backgrounds) to enter STEM - in a world of Kardashians, I think that's worth something. One of those girls she inspired - i.e. me - could end up helping to find the cure to currently incurable neurodegenerative diseases on the way to emulating her perceived success. That's worth something! Have a look at Nuplazid (I personally worked on the pimavanserin phase II trials for Alzheimer's disease) and others; I'm working hard to get to the top because I believe in the work that we do and the possibility of an Alzheimer's-free future. That being said, it is inspiring to see someone who sort of reminds you of you in a position of influence, because I see people like Ursula, a poor-background black girl - with the STEM education, professional success and influence you see predominantly with men, particularly white men, and it gives you a little push in moments of doubt (I have been in situations when I walk into a conference room and I visibly see people not taking me seriously because I don't "seem" the type to work in my area of clinical research). I believe anyone who works hard (in the West) can be successful, black/yellow/white/woman/man, and there are other candidates to Ursula's job who can do it a lot better, but inspiring others in a positive way is nothing to be scoffed at. Maybe she should give up being a CEO and just give motivational speeches :D

She has retired!!! Good news for xrx. She decided to leave while the gettinng was good. Her'golden parachute' will proveide lots of comfort while many struggle to keep thier homes. Amazing, you find failure to be inspirationalion. Was your comment based on skin color?! Of course it was!

The stock price dropped under her leadership. Thousands were laid off. The company was split into companies. And she is now retired.

You are inspired by; stagnant stock price (relatively unchanged in 5 years), reduced workforce, disappointing financials, company being split and that she won't be the CEO of either portion of Xerox at the end of the year.

It's not about skin color (to me at least). She hasn't been an effective leader. Thousands have lost their jobs and the stock value has done nothing for the last decade. But I'm willing to bet that it is all about skin color for you.
