Hi, I'm from Uruguay. I just wanted to say the Río de la Plata isn't dirty, the entrance to the Rio de la plata is sandy. Both Uruguay and Argentina have sandy coasts and sand is brought by the Uruguay river stream. In colonial times the Río de la Plata was a way into the heart of south america, and Montevideo was the only place suitable to have a dock for big ships. I hope you are enjoying your stay!

Auston, the ocean is not dirty ... the thing is that this bay is really wide, almost 80 km from Montevideo to Punta Pidras in Argentina. This produce a movement of water that sometimes wins the river (the water is brown) and sometimes win the ocean (the water is blue). Have a nice trip !

I lived in Buenos Aires for 12 years. In our country, we have three major cultural influences: murga, candombe, and tango. Candombe comes from the Afro culture of our country, and usually on weekends in Montevideo, people gather in neighborhoods like Ciudad Vieja, Palermo, and others to play candombe. In February, there's an event called "Las llamadas," where hundreds of people with their groups play the drum. I recommend visiting the neighborhoods of Pocitos and Carrasco-they are very beautiful. The beaches are clearer towards the east, although it's nothing like the Caribbean. If you have time, I also recommend Punta del Este, the exclusive resort of Uruguay, where tourists from all over the world come. I live there. Welcome to Uruguay. I want to make some comments to clarify some of your concepts. Rio de la Plata IS NOT an ocean, it is an ESTUARY. The brown water is not because it s "dirty" but because two rivers flow into it, Rio Paraná from Argentina, and Rio Uruguay between both countries, Argentina and Uruguay. A few miles east, the Estuary itself will flow into the Atlantic Ocean. In there the water is blue (In Punta del Este area) The shower you have on your roof it is probably for very hot days after grilling, I am sure you´ll be hot enough to use it. You are in a neighbourhood, La Aduana, where most of black Uruguayan from Mdeo, live. Right now, there are many more because we also have lots of Cubans, Dominicans, and blacks from some other places, even some from African countries. Black population in Uruguay used to be around 4%. We had some famous soccer players through history which were black. We probably have some in the National Team, right now. I don't know, because most of them are new young kids. The first famous black Uruguayan, was part of the team that won the soccer Olympics in 1924 and 1928, nowadays considered World Championship and also in 1930 he won the First World Cup. His name was José Leandro Andrade, he was from my town, Salto. French named him "la merveille noire." His nephew won the 1950 World Cup. You should also ask about Candombe, which is the most important music from Black Uruguayan. About the mate you bought, if it is the classical mate (made of a gourd) it needs to be "cured" before first use. I wish you could find an Uruguayan who can explain you how. Hey man! Really cool video. You may want to check out a local type of music called "Candombe", it's an important part of Uruguayan/black culture. Some days you can see them play on the street in different parts of the city.

Sup! I'm a first born American of Uruguayan parents. The water you are seeing is not dirty. It's an estuary and the fresh water meets the salt water in that area. Go to Punta del Este that is away from the river that divides Uruguay from Argentina and it is waaay bluer... I still enjoyed the vid though 🤗 just had to kick some knowledge ❤ also if you go farther up north, most Uruguayans speak both Spanish and Portuguese
Hi Austin! I'm glad you are in my beloved Uruguay, and in Montevideo! I've moved to NYC for YEARS. I'm glad you feel comfortable there. We are known for being friendly and hospitable. That apartment looks GREAT! It has an amazing roof top and you can also BBQ! Yes, Montevideo is where the black population is mostly, and yes, it is around 10% and they are mostly (if I'm not mistaken) in the neighborhoods named BARRIO SUR and PALERMO. As someone said in another comment, you should have the experience of listening to the sound of candombe. IT IS AMAZING. The Montevideo promenade is also an EXCELLENT walk that everyone enjoys. Especially the Pocitos promenade. The quarries of Parque Rodo. Pocitos (the neighborhood), as well as Buceo, Punta Gorda, Carrasco. You have to try our meat and achuras at El Mercado del Puerto (Ciudad Vieja). The famous Chivito. Maybe a good option for this is La Pasiva or El Chivito de Oro. Well...I could go on and on. hello. welcome to the country. I am Uruguayan and "the ocean" is not "dirty" as you say at minute 2:04. It is not the ocean, it is "the Silver River" which is not really a river, it is an estuary and that is why it is brown. We have oceanic beaches but to the east of the country.
The water is brown because that is not the ocean. That is the river plate that empties into the ocean. Also it is not dirty. The brown color is from the sediment from the river.
Nice video brother. I wouldn't to ask them if they speak portuguese because if your portuguese was good enough, you would be able to speak decent spanish. Spanish speaker knows that portuguese speaker can understand them pretty well. In fact they will struggle to understand portuguese because it is faster and more compressed language compared to spanish slower and clearer. The point is: it is easier for us portuguese to speak spanish than spanish speak portuguese. when you ask them if they speak portuguese, they will be left wonder if it isn't easier for you to speak spanish, and judge you as less cleaver person.

@RichBoy… I have white friends and colleagues and I have never once heard them ask about race when traveling… even when it’s to predominantly black countries like Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbados, St. Lucia, etc. They’ll sometimes be concerned if they’re going to country where they don’t speak the language but that’s it.

Water being dark doesn’t always mean it’s dirty most of the time it has to do with the color of the floor. Especially if we’re talking about ocean water
The water is not dirty, is brown because that’s not the ocean, is a river. The widest river in the world that divides us from Argentina. If you want blue water you have to go to Punta Del Este where the Atlantic Ocean begins.
Uruguay seems like a hidden gem. More African presence and economy seems to be the most stable in South America. My interest has definitely been piqued.

Uruguay is probably the most expensive of all the South American countries, but it's banking system is top notch(sometimes referred to as the Switzerland of South America). Uruguay is small; about the same population as Chicago. Ironically, it's not expensive to eat out. There world renowned for their beef. There is a patch of Uruguay near the border of Brazil where they speak Portuguese. It's crazy. On one side of the street it's Uruguay and the other side is Brazil. Also, it's quite progressive. Abortion is legal. Cannabis is legal. Prostitution is legal. Start a business there and you'll pay 5% tax for a certain period of time and no more than 12% after that. They are the largest exporter of software in Latin America and the 4th largest in the world(I think). It's an interesting, quiet place.

Hi my friend the water in the coast of Montevido is not ocean water it is a river called Rio de la Plata that's why it looks brown. That rivers divides Montevido from Buenos Aires. Another think in Uruguay whites aannd blacks are not separate like in US or UK in Uruguay we are all Uruguayans and when you ask for skin color the people will look at you kinda confused because we don't do that separation in here we are all the same.

The ocean is not dirty. The Río de la Plata is an estuary, where the Uruguay and Paraná rivers flow into the sea so what you see is brackish muddy river water but it is not polluted and is generally safe for bathing.
Hello first time in this channel. I was born in Uruguay. I have been living in the USA almost 50 years. My experience in Uruguay has never been about race. If you are white or you black it doesn’t matter if you are a good person. When I was a kid in school I never looked a classmate for his skin color. I was culture shock in the US when many people like you or dislike you according to the color of your skin. Americans are the one who differentiate. So please don’t try to make your trip about race. In Uruguay we appreciate, Candombe & Carnaval is part of our cultural which has African roots, as well as Tango and Folclore music.. my advice is to go and learn with a neutral heart. Uruguay is a very advanced cultural & socially..
You have to investigate more. The water is brown because Montevideo is still the River Plate, which is a river mouth for two major rivers, the Uruguay and the Paraná. So all that brown is from those two inner rivers. If you go past Piriapolis or Pinta del Este there you'll see the blue sea.

When I saw you go into a bookstore, I thought, "Oh! Great, he's going to get a Spanish phrase book." Nope. Looking at your 2023 as a whole, it seems your plan is more less to maybe use Africa and South America as your launch points/home bases. I'm just one guy with one opinion, but I would say it's time to get that 15 minutes a day on Spanish under your belt. At the very least. You have to know it will make your life better/easier/more successful. Would you consider maybe getting some of those translator earbuds? Just one opinion, I'm reluctant to offer it to you, but I also want the best for you.

Can I squeeze in one last opinion? I think you're better off asking if people speak English over PT. It's so, so, so voiding their history. They can forgive an American not speaking Spanish, and even though YOU know it's not Brazil, that question implies "you're all the same down here." Even a friendly statement like "sorry, I just started Spanish, my 2nd language is PT, do you know that?" Please forgive my suggestion, but I feel it's an important consideration. Welcome to Uruguay! I had to laugh when you asked the girl if there were many blacks, she was very confused. One thing you have to understand is, most of us don't care. The second thing is, in Uruguay, if you are mixed, you are considered white, opposite to the US. And we mix A LOT, so there is not really a separation between what you consider blacks and the rest of the population. So she was very confused, because she does not consider herself to be black and told you where you could find cubans, because they are newcomers and not mixed (yet). BTW, we use "negrito" like "honey" or "dear", no matter the color of your skin. I was really amused by this exchange, it was like the clash of two cultures...

I'll let you know that Uruguay use to be a state in Brazil called Cisplatina. Argentina and Brazil were going to have a war over the land but they opted to let it become it's own country. The thing is Uruguay had more Spanish settlers than Portuguese which is how Spanish became their language. Uruguay is better off not being a state of Argentina or Brazil because the poverty, crime and corruption is much less than the two aforementioned
