From Wikipedia:
U.S. Route 1 (US 1) is a United States highway which parallels the East Coast of the United States, running from Key West, Florida in the south to Fort Kent, Maine at the Canadian border in the north. Of the entire length of the route, 66.06 miles (106.31 km) of it runs through New Jersey. It enters the state from Pennsylvania on the Trenton-Morrisville Toll Bridge over the Delaware River in the state capital of Trenton, running through the city on the Trenton Freeway. From here, US 1 continues northeast as a surface divided highway through suburban areas continuing into Middlesex County and passing through New Brunswick and Edison. US 1 merges with US 9 in Woodbridge, and the two routes continue through northern New Jersey as US 1/9 to the George Washington Bridge over the Hudson River in Fort Lee. At this point, the road continues into New York City along with I-95.
The current alignment of US 1 between Trenton and New Brunswick was chartered as the Trenton and New Brunswick Turnpike in 1803 and struggled throughout its 100-year existence. In 1913, the Lincoln Highway across the United States was created and connected Trenton to Newark within New Jersey. The Lincoln Highway was legislated as Route 13 between Trenton and New Brunswick in 1917 and as part of Route 1 between New Brunswick and Elizabeth, later extended to Jersey City. With the creation of the U.S. Highway System in 1926, US 1 was designated to follow the Lincoln Highway between Trenton and Newark and the current alignment of US 1/9 Truck to Jersey City, where it continued to the Holland Tunnel. In 1927, the Lincoln Highway portion of US 1 became Route 27. The current alignment of US 1 between Trenton and Newark was legislated as Route 26, Route S26 and Route 25, while the current route north from Jersey City to the George Washington Bridge became Route 1 and Route 6. In subsequent years, US 1 was moved onto its current routing between Trenton and the George Washington Bridge. The state highways running concurrent with US 1 were removed in 1953, around the same time the route was moved to the Trenton Freeway within Trenton and the old alignment became US 1 Alternate, part of which is now US 1 Business. By 1969, the Trenton Freeway was extended north to Whitehead Road in Lawrence Township, and that segment became Route 174. When the Trenton Freeway was completed north to US 1, the US 1 designation was shifted to the freeway, replacing Route 174.

Smooth ride. You should have seen it in the mid '70's, heheh. One thing you can say about Jersey - its takes care of its highways. 🤠

Now you know why there's a Turnpike. US 1's a very old highway, built before, and built around, any possible modern improvements. MODot did a similar thing with US 67 (Lindbergh) in parts of St. Louis County in the 70's, adding the U-turn ramps and eliminating left turns because of all the wrecks on it. But MODot left the speed limit at 40, which is generally ignored.

South of Trenton, the only 2 other major alternatives to the New Jersey Turnpike is I-295 thru Camden and I-95 thru Philly. Idk why but recently I drove from Paterson NJ to Baltimore and I stayed on the turnpike all the way to Delaware. I guess because it’s a seamless ride. One day I’ll try 95 or 295 but I know even I’ll have to get in the turnpike coming from Maryland unless I take Route 1. It looks pretty smooth.

Depends on where you’re going and traffic. Most people stay on the NJ Turnpike and then go right over the Delaware Memorial Bridge. 95 is too much of a diversion if you’re headed beyond Newark, DE but if you don’t like the Delaware bridge, it’s a good alternative. 295 has a lot of exits, the 76 intersection sometimes backs up and the local cops like to hide out on 295 especially if traffic is backed up on the Turnpike. Sometimes I’ll take 295 all the way up/down just for the hell of it… but watch for the cops. Gas is also cheaper on 295 than the Turnpike.

From the south cross the Delaware Bridge then stay right to I-295 to I-195 to the Turnpike. I usually exit at US 9 and take US 1-9 the Pulasky Skyway to I-78 the Holland Tunnel. If I am going to Brooklyn then I use I-278 the Goethals Bridge to Verrazano Narrows Bridge. Going south I will use either US 1 or the Turnpike and I-195 to NJ 29 and cross the free bridge to Morrisville to US 1 to I-295/I-95.

I have driven this road hundreds of times when I lived in Edison and I could feel my blood boiling watching this. I would have been in that left lane out of there. This road has come a long way over the years because they have eliminated a lot of traffic lights between Lawrence Twp and Plainfield Road in Edison.

I watched a few RU-vid channels like this one. And they always have a front view, I’m wondering if possible if you can also have a left and right window view. I know that would me another camera or two or a couple of dash cams. But just watching a back of someone’s bumper can get a little boring. Anyway just a thought.

Why would anyone want to go from a 6-lane super highway (NJTP) to a sometimes 3 lane to 2 lane US-1 with traffic lights? I live only 3 miles from US-1 and I avoid it at all costs, taking local or rural roads. Now if there was a bad accident on the NJTP everyone will try US-1 and you know, it can't handle it - Grid Lock for hours & hours.
