"A classic is a work that has never finished saying what it has to say". This is the definition of a classic given by Italian writer Italo Calvino. This album corresponds perfectly to this definition, it crosses time without aging.

"The paper holds their folded faces to the floor, and everyday the paperboy brings more." Is one of my all time favorite lyrics. For me, it refers to newspapers (replaced by the internet now) and this existential dread that comes with the daily news, in a "if it bleeds, it leads" society. The newspapers are folded found the middle, and the lyric really gives ne the imagery of someone reading a paper, in a quiet state of dread, which is replaced daily by the paperboy.

Beautifully put and (I believe) spot-on. I think a lot of people miss that reference, maybe because they're looking for something more abstract in that phrase. I think even Floyd would be pleased with your imagery.

That WAS ..... a very special video!! More than a few people became musicians because of this very special album. You've already tracked thru Animals and some of WYWH. Full album reaction? THE WALL awaits. The truth is most of its parts can barely be understood separately, and the Floydian whole is always far more than the sum of the parts. This album is an audiophile dream. I've heard it as it was intended to be heard, in the full quad with extended bass. Most systems cannot do it justice. Very few groups from that time made the effort to record at the absolute edge of the state of the art. I still think you will love, love, love some good over-ear headphones. They blow away earbuds or earphones. They are a gift that keeps on giving. You love music. What are you waiting for?

Another great reaction. Not enough people react to "Brain Damage". BTW, the line "If there is no room upon the hill" refers to "Fool on the Hill" from the Beatles "Sergeant Peppers" album which was another ground breaking album from just 5 years earlier, and which was being put down in the Abbey Road studio whilst PF were recording their album "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" in the adjoining studio. "The lunatics are on the grass" refers to the notices in parks that say "Keep off the grass", and "The lunatics are in my hall" refers to the photos of politicians and others of dubious repute that appear in newspapers - hence "everyday the paperboy brings more". "And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes" refers to how PF went in a different creative direction after Syd Barrett left the band.

Animals would be the easiest album to to, it's only really 3 songs, and has a cohesive theme. I would recommend following along with the lyrics. Wish You Were Here is another great, complete album, a sad and bitter ode to Syd. The Wall is a monster of an album, and might be best reacted to as four parts. It tells the literal story of the character "Pink Floyd", a composite of Syd and Roger, from the loss of Roger's father in WWII when Roger was a baby, to Syd's descent into madness. It's a complete story told in four acts, or four sides of a double album.

Something I'd add, referring to what you said about them being master musicians, is that one of the things I love most about them is that they're probably the least showy of the major bands of the prog era. Nick Mason is a solid, steady drummer, absolutely *not* a virtuoso; Roger Waters similarly is a competent bass player (and acoustic guitarist), no more; Richard Wright was a very fine, highly imaginative keyboard player, who nevertheless eschewed any ostentation in his playing - it was all in service of the song. As to David Gilmour, while he's widely cited as many people's favourite rock guitarist, he rarely if ever goes in for "shredding" or what I'd call fretboard masturbation. His playing is technically precise, and gains its effect from his lyricism and *feel* and his superb facility with bending notes. So a band whose whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Roger Waters has a strong idea about the choice of the title (Any Color You Like) and its meaning. In Cambridge, where he lived at the time, vendors came from London in vans to sell bric-a-brac of cheap crockery and cutlery. One day when one of them had hooked up a customer for a set of Chinese plates, Roger overheard him selling his product, adding: "Yes ma'am, you can have them for 10p, the color of your choice, they are all BLUE (Any color you like, they're all blue)" Which led him to believe that all choices in a man's life are guided. No matter what path you take, karma will always catch up with you. Man thinks of making his own decisions, choosing his own color, but everything is already dictated, everything is BLUE. Typically Waters metaphor.
@JasonSmith-jr7jh

@@thepragmatic6383 I've never heard that. That was Henry Ford's famous quote, 60 years previous to that song. When the Model-T and Model-A we're first produced, he was asked if they came in other colors: "Any color you like...as long as it's BLACK." (They used Black paint to keep costs down, since it was the cheapest) 'Black' seemed to fit the concept, as in "There is no Dark side of the Moon really... matter of fact it's all Dark. I'm not doubting your story. I've just never heard Roger tell it. Though, the salesman definitely got that from Henry Ford...minus the Black. Sorry for nit-picking.

Great reaction. "The lunatics are in my hall, the paper holds their folded faces to the floor, and every day the paper boy brings more" Alludes to newspapers being delivered through the door usually by young boys we refer to as "paper boys" (UK doors have letter boxes where the mail and such is delivered directly into the hall and so each morning the mail and newspapers etc lie on the floor in the hallway of our homes for us to pick them up) It is one of those quirks where to a British person the lyrics make obvious sense but to an American who don't have letterboxes in the doors or newspapers delivered in such a way it would be hard to grasp. So of course the lunatics are the people who make up the headlines in the newspapers and their folded faces are their photos in the newspaper that has been folded to deliver through the letterbox.

While I LOVE Pink Floyd, I want to tell you that the rest of the Progressive Rock world also has amazing talent and fantastic music. Each of the great Bands have their own sound, and are each the best at what they do. Also, much of their work needs to be heard as full albums, an album is truly a journey in Prog. Yes, The Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, Rush, ELP, Genesis, etc. These are all in the same class as each other, but they are nowhere near the same. Some enjoy certain bands, while others prefer others. Pope you got to hear this album as a whole (maybe react to the whole masterpiece? ;)).

Indeed, it's easy to start a war when all you have to do is; "Forward he (Putin) cried from the rear - and the front rank died". "And the general (Putin) sat and the lines on the map - moved from side to side".

Just one of those genius albums. What else can be said? Right people, right time. They all pulled it together in the studio.

Yes, you should try an album reaction, and with a little luck it’ll stay up. I imagine most would request, “The Wall.” There are three that would be a nice project to react to and they are, Wish You Were Here, A Momentary Lapse of Reason, and Division Bell. These three have much in common with Dark Side. The Wall is a unique story all it’s own, to say the least.

This came out a half a century ago. And it's still so relevant. This is Roger Waters' masterpiece. This album is one of the best selling LP's of all time selling over 50 MILLION copies. The album itself STILL goes platinum every year as new fans find it and old fans replace old records and CD's. Meant, by Waters, to be a one long 42 minute suite, it had to be broken up into songs so the band could be paid for an "album" & not a single. This album was on the Billboard Hot 100 for 987 weeks (That's 19 YEARS on the charts, JUST INSANE). It was selected for preservation in the United States National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". It literally is a PERFECT album. #1 of all time in my opinion. The lengths they went to, to pull this off in 1973, with no computers and analog is just astounding!!

I first heard this song aged 10 in the late 70s about 5 years after it was first released and it remains my favourite album ever all these years later. Great to see someone young appreciate just what a masterpiece the DSOTM is.

With what's happening today between Russia and Ukraine this song is as true today as it was right after Vietnam. War is hell and war is ugly and it is something we as ordinary men (walk right into our deaths willingly) would not choose to do. And today, just as then, but rather on a computer screen instead of paper, the lines still move from side to side while the General sits. I'm sure you can understand why even fifty years later this is their number one selling album.

one of those albums, where if you lay on the couch with headphones on, you may want to drop an anchor.or you may find yourself floating around thruout the house.

Yeah man that was the janitor that worked at Abbey Road and all the monologue is him telling stuff they would ask him questions and he would give his opinion and they would talk about philosophy and different things and that was so cool man that they put that all in there

Dark Side of the Moon. El mejor álbum de toda la historia del rock. Sin lugar a dudas. Y ya pronto cumple 50 años. ¡!casi mi edad¡! Agradezco haber vivido esta época en la que la real y excelente música me ayudaron a crecer.
