In the first episode for 2022 (!) I share something I have never shared before: My Toilet Anxiety Story.
I've spoken about my anxiety story (at length) many times over the last decade - and there are many ways in which my toilet anxiety story and my anxiety story intersect and overlap. But while my anxiety story starts about eight or nine years ago, my experiences with toilet anxiety stretch much further back.

Thank you for speaking on this subject! For me, I struggle to use the bathroom when people are around me or waiting on me. I get so tense that I can't actually 'go' even though I'm physically in pain because I need to use the bathroom. Thank you for helping me not feel so alone about it!

One of my closest friends has this problem, too. I think it is far more common than people think. We are all deeply bound by the possibility of being shamed or humiliated. Sending you so much love and warmth.

This is my exact problem. I have IBS and have had times where I have had close calls and twice when we literally had to find a quiet country road and I went behind a hedge in a ditch. God help me if I'd been shopping! I now have a fear of losing either my pee or stool. I have panic attacks as soon as I feel any slight tummy issues or natural urgency feelings to the point I will then need to go badly. I can be just talking to someone and the fear hits and I have to run away from the situation sometimes. Its ruining my whole life but I keep trying to relax more. I think in this day and age of everyone having phones, i fear I will embarrass myself and be mocked for it. Thanks so much for talking about it. I always feel like I am the only one.

I hear you! And I have heard the exact same thing from others regarding the fear of phones/social media and being filmed and mocked. I have thoughts on that, though - firstly, it would take a pretty sad individual to share something like that for the sake of mockery, but also - these things are nothing more than a couple of seconds of fleeting entertainment that are quickly forgotten or the meaning of them lost behind memes, anyway. We live in a world where there is SO MUCH content available on every platform and if someone were to take a video of me in a vulnerable moment and share it - it says nothing about me and everything about them. Social media isn't real, at the end of the day. I hope that helps a bit - it's something I've certainly played around with in my head many times and I've come to feel so strongly about it.

Thank you for talk about this subject. I live in Brazil, so sorry about my bad english. I have (or had?) the same problem. In 2011 I was travelled in holidays to the beach and I eaten a hamburguer in Mc Donald´s. This hamburguer makes me so sick that I had stomachache and diarrhea for days and since this day, my bowel never be the same. I had diarrhea every morning before go to the College, in some days I needed to go to bathroom 9 times. I went to doctors and did a lot of exams e everything was normal. So the doctors said that I was with IBS and anxiety. Today I have a normal life. I don´t eat junk food (ultra processed food?), only healthy and homemade food. Today my anxiety is under control. I used antidepressant for a period and today I´m in therapy (cognitive behavioral therapy). Thank you for help me and a lot of people! Kisses from Brazil.

I really appreciate you being vulnerable and sharing your experiences with us. I get so much out of your podcast, videos and IG posts. I panic whenever I have the runs and it’s only intensified over the years.

This is exactly my fear... I fear not making it to the toilet. No 2 I'm working on exposure therapy and seeing a new therapist so I'm hopeful I will heal from this! I can't thank you enough for your honesty and for giving us a voice. XXX

Thank you so much! I have IBS and I went through similar nightmares. The sweating, heart-racing and the humiliating feeling, that was all so accurate! I have been dealing with this for 20 years now and only recently I decided to open up about it.

This is so helpful, thank you so much. I think another thing that’s important is to maintain challenging it. More than once I’ve done really well with car journeys and my anxiety but then taken a step back and as a result I had to do the whole gradual exposure thing all over again because suddenly walking around the block felt impossible and that I was definitely not going to make it. Embrace the unknown I guess! I was wondering is it a bad safety behaviour to bring clothes with you because that’s helped a little for car journeys bringing spare clothes even if it’s a ten minute journey

Thank you for your videos! Was just wondering how long did it take for you to see improvements in your toilet anxiety? I have been dealing with the constant urge to pee for over a year and really trying to force myself to fight the urge too, but progress seems to be extremely slow and fleeting. Mine was triggered by a series of urgent incidents on public transport where I had to run off and search for a toilet, and one day the sensation never left. Would love to hear you talk more in detail about how you carried out your training, the recovery timeline etc. Really appreciate your sharing! I felt so alone when all my tests were negative and I've never heard of anybody dealing with anything like this

Thank you for your videos 💞 any suggestions when it comes to going to the doctors? White coat syndrome comes on and also when your vulnerable (pap smears etc…) when you cant just get up and leave a situation? 😞

A lot of what you say resonates with me, but especially the bit where you say that people saying "you're not going to die" doesn't help - it's like okay, that's cool, but what about shidding my pants? 😂😂

Did you also experience the urge to poop right after eating? I deal with the exact same toilet anxiety (I have IBS-d and generalized anxiety disorder and toilet anxiety) and even when I’m calm at home and have access to a bathroom, I still have to urgently poop after eating, sometimes even during the meal. Do you think that’s related to the anxiety or ibs? Did you deal with this too? Thank you so much for talking about this.
@LaurenRose.

Hey Ruth! I don't experience this to a huge degree these days (I'm pretty 'regular' now, I'm a morning pooper!). But I want you to know that I was reading some articles and it turns out that what you describe is very, very normal!! I don't think its necessarily related to IBS or anxiety - I mean, I would imagine that it is somewhat exacerbated by anxiety, but apparently the need to poop straight after eating (or even during) is due to a process called 'mass peristalsis', which is a wave of strong contractions that moves feces down the colon to the rectum. It happens about 3-4 times per day and is usually right after a meal. Totally normal, and a healthy bowel process! I would *guess* that getting anxious about it happening would probably cause it to feel more urgent and perhaps more scary maybe. I hope that wasn't too much info and that it helps - for me it seems to help to learn more about how the body works and where in the process I just need to step aside and allow my body to do its thing!
@ruth5227
@ruth5227 Год назад
Thanks for the info! So are you saying that the mass peristalsis is part of normal digestion, but to someone with toilet anxiety/ibs it would trigger a feeling of panic, making the urge to go even worse? I don’t know if normal people who don’t have anxiety/ibs can feel those gut contractions or if they aren’t even aware of them. Like does everyone feel the urge to go after eating, but people who aren’t anxious don’t feel it so intensely? It’s hard to imagine what normal should feel like. :)
@LaurenRose.
@LaurenRose. Год назад
Yep that's exactly right! Contractions of the colon are totally normal, but I believe that for those of us who are anxious about it, not only are we probably more sensitive to the sensations, but we also panic when we feel those sensations which probably makes them feel amplified (and makes us feel worse, on the whole). Most people I know who don't have toilet anxiety still need to rush to the toilet in the morning after breakfast or after a coffee, for example. I think we forget that so much of what we are experiencing is in fact a normal feeling, it's just that we attach so much extra meaning to it and therefore so much extra stress on our nervous system.

Thank you so much! That’s really helpful for me and I appreciate it so much💓💓 I’ll be starting cognitive behavioral therapy soon, so I will take this info to the appointment. 😊
