I remember them back in the 1970s, used for refilling our canteens. One quart canteens sloshed too much so we (Rangers) used 2-quart canteens. They make good pilows as well!
I carried one of those in or on my ruck from 1978 to 1988. Learned about it on the recommendation of a MACV-SOG veteran. So, at least some of them were manufactured during the Vietnam War.
As an update to my last comment… I would be careful when buying these. I closely inspected all four that I bought. The one I bought in a surplus store that was already assembled still works fine. But the other three that I bought on eBay - all of which were new and still in the box (I.e. still folded up) leaked soon after being filled. I guess the inner bladders had been folded into that compressed shape for probably a couple of decades, minimum. After filling them and expanding the bladders, all three promptly leaked. Just FYI.
Those tie-offs specifically mate with the and are made to tie off to the Alice Rucksack frame. This allows you to stow it in the space between your back and the ruck sack itself. Blow them up with air when not in use and they make a great back pad while rucking with the Alice. Or you can fill them and carry them in the same location.
I absolutely love these collapsible canteens. I have sewn a pillowcase of sorts for mine out of an old military jacket liner and it's so far the best camp pillow ever. These work well as flotation devices too! Win-win this piece of gear is!
I never knew how compact that could be. I wondered just how that belt loop worked! I heard about this "BLIVET" in a book called "The 13th Valley". The guy who had it used it for water stowed in his pack, using it to refill canteens in the mornings (after use as a pillow over night). I found mine at a local antique boutique, and grabbed it as soon as I saw it.Thanks for the video!!
MSR DROMDARY is simlar and comes in sizes 2L, 4L, 6L, and 10L. You can also purchase a "hydration kit" that provides a hose turning it into a camelbak. I heard you can swap out the mouth piece for one from Source Hydration. I've been meaning to see if that's possible. If so I'll prolly use that w a 6L DROMDARY as my hydration bladder w my Ruck or larger assault packs (Camelbak BFM/Blackhawk Titan or Barrage) when on longer patrols around my B.O.L. Really getting big on water for SHTF. I think that'll kill off most people in the SW. If a civil war did happen, SoCal would be cleaned out once the aquaduct and pumping stations are sabotaged. Why a 2qt canteen, w electrolytes, in addition to 2 1qt canteens/bottles on my webbing or pack hip belt along w a water bladder are part of my loadout. Probably a DROMDARY to replace a 3L Camelbak. If I need to reduce weight, I'll just drink up. Can never have too much H2O in the SW.
This is really cool, however here is my issue with bladders like this. They are very tough to clean out and tend to get moldy inside fairly quickly. I know using a small amount of bleach helps but also breaks down the bladder after a long time of use. I am a huge huge fan of Cnoc bladders because there easy to clean out and keep clean. The tablets do work, but leave a weird taste first few times of use after cleaning. Once again I am not knocking this device just giving my preference. Cheers buddy.
Got mine with a bunch of other gear many months ago but just recently pulled it out. Knew or thought it to be a water container but not all that much about it. Only missing the strainer/screen. Thanks for the education!
I use one of the sillcock keys at work if I need water for watering or filling sprayer I have that same bag as get home bag just black holds the necessities
I really like this, never saw it before, not only could this be a bug out item or whatever situation you mite find yourself in, but it could also serve as an alternate camp pillow, or a flotation device, or a 5L bladder canteen. Will look for this, love this for multiple uses. I'm in Vegas, where did you get this at ?

Yeah and I think I have one from another item, that would fit it perfectly. The two things up on the top where the strings are, are just tied in there like a ring, could easily snap it on there.
Yes. But it's meant to be tied outside. These were intended for LRRP missions. Good for laying up in a hide if water was close by. In Vietnam, teams were compromised so often that ammo took precedence over a gallon of water. Besides, like most good ideas, they got in theater too late too little.

Yeah they have a huge audio library too, but some people just use the same ones. Also a great source for youtube tunes is a channel called "No Copyright Sounds" he has loads of EDM type stuff that is free to use as long as you credit him
