The D-Day invasion of Omaha Beach was essential to the success of Operation Overlord. It was also one of the most devastating for the American landing force. United States Army Special Operations Command Historian Dr. Troy Sacquety takes Jedburgh Media Channel Creator and Host Fran Racioppi on an in-depth tour of the D-Day invasion at Omaha Beach in Normandy, France.
Join us for a rare opportunity as one of our leading experts in Special Operations history re-enacts the historic events of June 6, 1944, shedding light on the strategic importance of Omaha Beach in the broader Operation Overlord plan. Learn how the positioning of German machine gun bunkers devastated American units as they landed, and the valiant efforts of the Ranger Battalion as they fought uphill to clear the bunkers, move to the rally point, and then reinforce Point Du-Hoc.

When I was serving in Brit Army (2001-2019) we still studied D-Day. I’ve stood on all those beaches (and further inland) to make sure we learn our history and understand the responsibility we carry for committing troops to battle. Seeing row upon row of white crosses is truly humbling. God bless the greatest generation.

Most people think of a bunker as pointing to the sea, they were in fact pointed parallel to the beach’s shooting long way down, the walls facing the sea were very thick and able to withstand hits… it took a special kind of courage to assault these bunkers, the likes of we cannot imagine. Not really interlocking fields of fire is not a new concept even at the on set of WW2. It was used going back long before firearms were ever invented. Most ramparts in old fort used this concept. Firing head on into your enemy is actually probably the worst use of machinegun fire sure it works great when everyone is lined up coming off a land craft but once they are off people scatter.

Don't romanticize it. They were simply normal men put in desperate situations, and they had a job to do. To say anything more is to put them on a pedestal they didn't ever want to be on, because all the adoration and respect in the world never gave a single one of their brothers back to them. I guarantee you right now that if they could have continued on living and seen all of their fallen compatriots come back, they would gladly trade that in an instant even if it meant no one else in the rest of the world would know what they did. We remember, not to elevate them, but to make sure their job only ever needs to be done once.

There were more British and Canadian troops on the beaches that day than American troops. Canadians gained their beach and forced march of 15 miles to come in from behind on the Nazis and help out our US buddies. Read what actually happened not the Hollywood version. Too many brave men died that day.

My grandpa Joe McNerney “Groove”, was on Omaha Beach that day. He was awarded a bronze star and a Purple Heart as a medic. I don’t know if it was for that battle or another, he never spoke of it. He lived on to became one of the most beloved figures in Brookside KCMO. His funeral had people waiting their turn in the parking lot to pay respects. I miss him everyday and consider myself blessed to be his progeny. I love you gpa, ride easy.

My uncle piloted one of the landing craft. For years, he wouldn’t talk to anyone about the horror of watching men gunned down as soon as he opened the ramp, and then having to go back and pick up more men to drop off and watch the killing again. Not to mention seeing landing craft next to him get blown out of the water by German shells. We who’ve never seen battle cannot begin to imagine the toll it takes on a man’s soul. God bless all who gave themselves to the cause of freedom.

My grandfather was on Omaha Beach that morning. He was a Seneca named Arron Jacobs. He never spoke of his time in the service. Besides joining in ‘41. I learned of him being on Omaha Beach from our local museum that opened 2018. He was my father’s father. My mom’s father was in the navy at this time. And still have no idea of what both men actually did. My mom’s dad passed when she was 9. And my father’s dad passed when he was 15. We still reside on the same reservation both men lived. Except my dad’s family was removed from our ancestral homeland in 1964 for the Kinzua damn project proposed by the army corp of engineers. That still to this day maintains the damn. They (the army) put us closer to Salamanca NY. Where our reservation currently stands.

My Uncle was a Ranger at Pointe du Hoc. His best friend got separated from my Uncle and was in a different landing craft. My Uncle told me that he kept looking over to his left to make sure his friend made it out of the boat and onto the shore, looked once he said and the next time he looked they were all gone. The boat had taken a direct hit killing everyone and sinking the boat almost immediately.

I was in that bunker in November, with an absolutely empty beach, and suddenly it all made sense. I too had always pictured little cement buildings on the tops of the cliffs but when you look out and you can see hundreds of yards of beach in front of you it really hits you how good this position was.
