Germany and China are strengthening ties, but the German chancellor’s high level, and high-stakes visit to Beijing will be a diplomatic and economic challenge.
Both countries can’t seem to get a grip on their economic woes. China is trying to export masses of subsidized goods to Europe and America. But that creates new problems.
The US, and its Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen are already threatening further tariffs and a trade war. Meanwhile, Germany is trying a new China strategy, which oscillates between cooperation and isolation.
On To the Point we ask: US-China trade war: Which side is Germany on?
Our guests:
Vendeline von Bredow is the Senior Germany correspondent for The Economist, based in Berlin.
Felix Lee is a journalist, a long-time correspondent in China and currently works for the specialist German news outlet China.Table.
and Matthew Karnitschnig is a journalist and correspondent with Politico here in Berlin.

I live in Australia, our government used to pump in billion of our tax money to subsidize major car companies like GM, Ford etc, why ? Because our government thought it was worthwhile to keep the industry and keep the car industry competitive against cars imported from Japan and Europe, but interestingly we heard no complaints whatsoever about Japan or Europe car, and the media thought the exercise of subsidies were legitimate, no complaints at all. Now China boost the EV industry to get the country met the environment needs, improve air quality, but the Western world critical about it. What a double standards and hypocrite😮

😆commitment ? 29-3-2024, Biden’s $7.5 billion investment in EV charging has only produced 7 stations in two years. After two years, that program has only delivered seven open charging stations with a total of 38 spots where drivers can charge their vehicles, according to a spokesperson for the Federal Highway Administration. (The funding should be enough to build up to 20,000 charging spots or around 5,000 stations, according to analysis from the EV policy analyst group Atlas Public Policy.)

I'm sorry the over-capacity argument I don't buy. Chinese EVs make up 5,2% of the global market and 94,8% are sold in the Chinese market. If this argument was serious then we would be arguing that Germany has a problem in over-capacity in its automotive sector because 13% is sold outside Germany. Why no one made this argument about Germany (and I would make the same argument about Japanese automotive sector). It sounds like people are saying that the Chinese must have enough capacity to only sell in China. But then that means there should be no trade. I don't think anyone wants that.
@user-hc9lp3hb1r
@user-hc9lp3hb1r Месяц назад
The only reason Chinese EV's only make up 5.2% of the global market is because they are currently vastly inferior to US and European EV's and people know it. Once the Chinese can produce an EV on par with a Tesla at half the price you will see many EV companies going bankrupt.
@Saeras42
@Saeras42 Месяц назад
You're right, this argument doesn't withstand any criticism. It's even crafted in a way that most viewers will easily find it fair, 'as if for first graders.' After all, regular viewers don't know the market figures and data you've mentioned in your comment. Unfortunately, these double standards will remain a problem for a long time. But eventually, honest work will prevail. So, it's inevitable - over time, the truth will have to be acknowledged. They won't be able to enrich themselves at the expense of other nations as they did before. They'll have to work.

Things are very simple, China has cheap resources from Russia, Germany has expensive resources for the sake of its master, the US. It is not difficult to figure out what the real problems are. I think that it would be in the best interest of the German people (not necessarily for the entrenched German political class) for Germany to not align with one side over the other, but rather to adopt a foreign policy that maximizes flexibility to adopt policy decisions on an issue-by-issue basis. Germany should be friendly to both China and the USA and not rhetorically tie itself to one or the other. Of course the problem is that the overbearing USA will not allow Germany (or any other country) to pursue this most rational of policies--the USA demands that one is "with the USA" or "against the USA".

Wrong question asked. The right question will be what is the best interest to Germany, not picking sides for the sake of it. Determined on a case by case based on Germany's interest.
