I was the only certified transporter of the F-35 lift fan out of Indianapolis, IN. Rolls Royce England was buddies of a company in Jacksonville, FL, so they forced Indianapolis to stop using me and use them. The mgr of Indy tried to get Ipls to keep me, but England told them they had to stop using me and use their pals, even though they wrecked trucks carrying $1,200 million engines and $28,000 lift fans. I even helped with wiring on the lift fans. I had to tell them what air suspension was, too.

@@Truthbomb918 Touche'. I had a chance to work around them when I was an Active Duty Marine attached to an AV8-B Harrier support squadron. They still fly them at the Marine base I was stationed at - MCAS Cherry Point, NC. I went by the base on my way back from a coastal deep-sea fishing trip. My Mum and I stopped by on our way back (she'd never been deep-sea fishing and we went to knock off part of her bucket list, LOL).

Yes, the Marine Corps still flies them. I went by my old base after a deep-sea fishing trip on the coast and the first thing I saw flying was a Harrier. This was a few months ago. They'll be phased out in a few years though.....

And flew close to 1,500 MPH? Nope. The Harrier was just slightly faster than the fastest helicopter and it took close to 100% of a pilot's attention to keep the craft flying, landing correctly or taking off correctly. The F-35 is a flying computer that has demonstrated its ability to GUIDE missiles while both are flying at top speed. Mos things are automatic, with the pilot hardly spending any time physically controlling the craft, because it pretty much controls itself, in addition to being able to control drones flying in its vicinity... Even the F-22 can't do that. The ONE real thing that the larger, 2 engined F-22 could do better than the single engine F-35 is that the former could get to Japan from Hawaii fast, or get here to Germany faster. That's it. Anything else that the F-22, the F-35 could also do it; and there are some number crunching acts that the F-35 could do that's just beyond the computer power of the F-22. But the F-22, even at full speed, FOR VERY BRIEF MINUTES, at Mach 2.8+ is just useless against ICBMs that could do up to Mach 26... or roughly 8.5 times faster than it. Most high end air to air and larger and more powerful surface to air anti-aircraft missiles easily fly between Mach 4 and Mach 6, today... and those with better/different engine drives that could easily do between Mach 6 and Mach 9 or so.... are coming out the next 8 to 10 years... with all "near peer nations" having comparable ones.... so, again, fighter jet speeds are pretty irrelevant, from now on... especially the TINY differentials among them... It's stealth, radar capability, number crunching, data link, ease of use/versatility of an aircraft, etc. that are important to survival in a contested volume of space where you don't know exactly where the enemies are....

It all depends what conflicts do or do not occur, but the F35B is a carrier-based stealth aircraft and the F16 is neither, so it's pretty easy to think of missions the F35B could do that the F16 could not even get there to try.

The f35a/b/c will definitely provide necessary situational oversight to the battle. Due to cost, I'm not sure it'll be in a first strike situation all alone, though as a fleet defender it would be invaluable to be first to see strike scenarios.

"These are so expensive" The US spends money on military hardware because the alternative is paying in blood instead. The B-2 Spirit stealth bomber is currently one of the most expensive aircraft in the US arsenal per unit, and yet it's seen a LOT of combat sorties in various conflicts. The Israeli Air Force has also used their F-35's in actual combat as well for both air-to-air and ground attack sorties. The F-35 currently isn't even as expensive as some of the upgrades being done to last generation fighters, so saying it's too expensive to use is utter nonsense.

you realize that 1) the F-16 isnt even operated by the navy and 2) dogfighting with guns doesnt even happen anymore, right? the F-35 has been combat tested by the IDF already, and we know from MULTIPLE exercises that the F-35 is able to trounce 4th generations (such as the F-16)
