When the USMNT know that the opposing team is technically better than them, they tend to do well because they don't try to play too fancy. The example of that was England vs. US in the last world cup. On the other hand, when they miscalculate and think they have the technical ability to go toe to toe against a team that is superior to them, they get punished. The example of that was Netherlands vs. US on the last world cup. Same mistake is made against Colombia.

We are not bad, but our soccer culture is. Brazil, for example, can field a squad of 23 players who might be in bad club form, but when they put on the national team shirt, they instantly become really good. Think about Richarlison. I believe it's a cultural change we need. It's hard to get the culture right, and clearly, Gregg is not succeeding in that aspect. We need a major transformation if we want significant improvements in our results. We have the talent, but many good teams with talent still fall flat. The USMNT from 2010 or 2014 would likely beat our current team because they had an identity. Most of our players were in MLS back then, but they proved they could compete against the best in Europe. Now, our players are in Europe's top leagues and yet are flopping against opponents from the Portuguese league or lower-level Spanish teams.

This team has talent, but the coach is bad and i think the US beating mexico on a consistent basis has given the impression that the team is top tier which they aren't. The squad isn't a France or England squad, but almost every other nation in existence has to call up several middling players to round out their squads. That take is just bait for some fans and cope for others. Statistically, our team should be solid (again, not an England or France solid), but we put up horrible results against quality opposition. When that is the case, you look to the coach.
Not only does 3G insist the team play a certain way no matter who the opponent is, he *also* insists they play a certain way no matter what players he has. A coach can be a very good coach as a system coach, but you have to have the players with the right skills to play that system. That can work on a Club team where you can aquire the players with the right skills to do that. But it doesn't work on a National team where you don't have that luxury. To coach a national team, you need to be able to identify what your players strengths and weaknesses are, and develop a system to *fit* those talents. 3G can't do that.
When Ivory Coast, Morocco, or Germany underperform, no one questions them firing their coaches. When American fans point out the continuing failures of their coach, it's just "well American players are overrated" It's not like we expect the US to be as good as France, but we should be better than this. Gregg has 1 win against top 20 teams outside of Mexico (Iran), even previous American teams did better than that.
I think the issue is there's a conflict of interest when they rehired gregg. Instead of moving on and finding a better or decent coach to take over, they decided to rehire gregg. From my understanding greggs brother is the #2 in the US federations. Something tells me someone pulled strings to rehire him. Before rehiring him, there were top tier coaches on the market, at some point they had mourinho, zidane, etc and i doubt they even attempted to get them to coach the team. Obviously, i don't think any top tier coach would like to coach the US team, but i think they didn't even attempt to find a coach and there plan was to rehire Gregg the whole time.

I am colombian, and I can tell that was expecting much more from USA, the squad is really talented. But if you see the second half of the game you will notice a serious lack of concepts about how to transition the ball from GK to the midfield, so the USA team scrumbled against a mid intensive pressure. I can tell you if you repeat this game in Barranquilla, Colombia, our team would be much more aggressive. They need to strengthen a lot the team game not talent

There's a difference between having a philosophy and stubbornly sticking to tactics. A good coach isn't tactically stubborn, but adapts to opponent, game state, and players available. Berhalter is not a good coach. Even Pep boots it long when he has to.

Herc nailed what the criticism is- they've done more with less in the past. But for some reason we think we have to play like Man City, when we don't have that high quality of player. We don't have the quality of center back or goalkeeper to play out from the back reliably, or to defend top quality teams. We need to play a back 3, which lets Robinson and Dest play more forward like they want to as wingbacks and gives a more solid back line. Play whichever striker can win duels and knock the ball down best, and play like Brentford rather than Man City.

Yes, they are one of the best groups in our history, but not the best. However, on the international stage that doesn't mean much. They have a long way to go. Accepting that reality doesn't change that Berhalter is much further from being a good coach than they are being great players. I’m sorry, but whenever the commentator was saying the us didn’t have starters in Europe is objectively an idiot. Every player bar turner, Reyna and ream (injured) started a significant amount of games. They’re not elite, but they’re also not mediocre. The us was destroyed by Colombia, but they’re tactically inflexible like Steve was saying. Guys like Robinson and Richards thrived in the prem but looked awful against Colombia. Pulisic came off at halftime. They need to adjust to the opposition before the game starts and also make reactionary changes, and this is where GGG fails. Louis van Gaal essentially said so after the Qatar knockout match that Gregg didn’t play chess once the game kicked off, he just expected his initial tactical plan to succeed.

I love that this show has the time to have long form discussions. It seems that every modern show on TV and radio is full of 30 second soundbites and then expected to move on quickly. This is refreshing and needed. Props!
This team and federation need to progress from "playing the ball long" and playing conservatively without any holding of the ball. Even if they aren't ready, they just have to get used to playing the right way - creatively and positively.

Dan is absolutely right. Berhalter is terrible but the USMNT team is also MEDIOCRE. Aside from Pulisic and Weston, who do they have? They play in mid table and relegation level teams or in second tier. NONE of them consistently play in teams that compete in the Champions League. If your “star” CAM can’t start for Nottingham or Dortmund, you can expect mediocre results

@malfre45 Go player by player and compare them to the Americans. Look at transfermarkt of the teams. The US is ranked 11th Colombia is ranked 12th. It's not a perfect comparison due to older players on Colombia like James Rodriguez worth less due to them being in their 30s. I agree this is a good Colombia team but I still got Uruguay ahead of you and even Ecuador is close. Obviously I'm bias but I believe if the US had a better coach who adjusted tactics it's a 50/50 game on paper due to player pool.
@@absurdandy4122 Diaz is literally the ONLY Colombian player starting at a bigger club than Pulisic, Weah, and McKennie. As a TEAM Colombia are far superior but on paper they are for sure comparable to the USMNT. Watford? Genk? Krasnodar? Al Sadd? Not exactly household names for clubs lol. Transfermarkt has the 27 USMNT squad at a higher value ($347 million) compared to the 28 man Colombia squad ($287 million). So yeah, give Colombia their due, they are a great team and are playing incredible together, but Dan is very obviously trolling with his comments to get a reaction, and us fans are absolutely right to be fed up with seeing this Berhalter team try and force playing out of the back and get burned OVER AND OVER against good pressing teams that KNOW what we are going to do EVERY TIME! I am from Argentina I watched and played football my whole life. My take on this is that the USA finally has competitive-level players. I watched the game against Colombia. From my perspective, it was clear that there were coaching issues. The way the defense is organized, and most of all the tactical proposal by the coach is horrible. He Is not minimally harnessing the talent of their players. Just hire an Argentinean coach as most of the Copa America teams, or an European Coach. I love this Copa America format with all the teams from the continent. It is very good to play with Mexico and the USA and the rest of the best CONCACAF teams. I am in favor of CONMEBOL CONCACAF integration. If the Copa América becomes much more interesting with this integration, imagine if the Copa Libertadores were played including clubs from the USA and Mexico (The best clubs from Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, and the USA). With time it would be a great show to compete with the Champions League.

Dan, thank you. It’s exhausting all of the rationalizing of this coach and this team. Stop, we aren’t very good. Dan is right, our players other than 4 players are marginal squad players with minimal game time. I agree with Stevie, our team and coach act shocked when our opposition figures them out in the first 5 minutes.
Nicol brings up such a good point about these players. They truly think they’re much better than they are. That’s just a product of them always being the best at the youth level and then making a top 5 league, however they all seem to think they’ve arrived when really they have a long way to go and many of them are less skilled and just athletic.

To say Colombia is a good team and not a great team is stupidity at its finest. A team with their record is, at this moment, undeniably a great team, literally one of the best right now. Historically, yes, they are merely a good team. However, what matters is what they are right now, not what they were a few years ago.
American soccer has always been mediocre at best. But what is worse is American soccer journalists. Colombia is not good enough for a 5-1? Give Colombia some credit !
Dan is stating obvious facts and I can't believe people are calling him out for it. We have guys starting that aren't even getting on the pitch for their club teams or are squad players at best. We had at least one guy at every level of that pitch (keeper, defender, mid, striker) that wasn't starting or even getting minutes for his club team. We have probably one of the lowest rated keepers we've had at the national level in the past 30 years.
Gio reyna one game for nottingham forest, and matt turner well yeah lets not go there either and these are just the two i can remember right now bc they were in the field against colombia. Usa used tk always have some of the best goalkeeper in the American continent, thats no longer the case and no one knows why, gio reyna has great potential and thats why the fans claim for him to be aleays on the pitch but remember he showed his potential when he was getting constant play time, he isnt in form right now and not much can be expected of him. Pulisic doesnt have the same quality players around him as he doesn in Milan so he cant shine the same as well.
Dan also defended maguire at united and threw foreign players like Martinez under the bus and made fun of his height for weeks. Martinez is better than any English defender
